I wish Samsung would get on the move and release iOS compatibility. Because I would love to have Samsung Pay on my wrist and Apple Pay in my pocket. But I'm willing to bet that certain features will be gimped. My Moto 360 experience is worse on iOS vs Android but that's to be expected.
I doubt Samsung would allow Samsung Pay to be used when an S3 is paired with iOS for some reason. That would be cool though.

That's a hell of a lot more screen real estate in a similarly sized package, but that's Apple's MO seeing how overly large the iPhone series is versus its screen size. Just look at the massive bezels on the AW, embarrassing in 2016, and hey they are going to release it again as a new model in a week.
You officially have bezelphobia! :p

4 Days?? Only in Watch Mode! Never ever in GPS Mode. I guess <4 hours GPS in real life. Overall nice Gadget.
Comparably sized god devices (but with smaller batteries) can do god for about ten hours (screen off). For something like running or biking I can see this going much longer than 4 hours, especially with the huge battery it has (it's battery is over 3x that of the god enabled Fitbit surge). For those navigating with a map (for whatever reason one would want to do that) I could see the life severely diminished. But one would hope the app would be smart and only load/show the screen when the wrist is raised appropriately to be looking st the device rather than always on.

Not that I agree with Apple here, but I think the reasoning is because that back sensor sort of "sinks in" to your arm, and so effectively isn't raising the Watch off of your risk much, if at all. This is, of course, if it's in tight enough to give good HR readings.
The reasoning doesn't change the actual dimensions of the watch though. In a classic marketing move, Apple's customer facing dimensions are the case dimensions only. That spec does not include the glass nor the sensor on the bottom. Is Apple alone in this practice? I have no idea. I'm making no judgments about the practice. Just pointing out that case dimensions do not equal watch dimensions and shouldn't be confused with each other.

Dont want.

Maybe if i was a dad in the 90's i would want a tacky dad-watch, but alas no time travel.

Samsung is advertising this as having a FULL COLOR always on display. If it gets 3-4 days with always on display I'll be floored. I'm not familiar with the AW, does it display anything at all when its off?

Very nice. Perhaps a bit to big, but still.

Samsung are without a doubt ahead of Apple now, better battery life, GPS and LTE. Water resistance level 8, so you can message people when you sit in the line up waiting for waves.

I can't see why anyone would wanna buy an ordinary watch, besides expensive luxury watches, when the form factor is a little bit smaller.

I'd actually expect the opposite. If they want you to be using Samsung Kay they shouldn't throw hurdles at you. You might need to register your cards through the watch itself or something like that.

As if this exact moment I ship st more places that don't accept Apple Pay than those that do. Hell, most places either don't have or don't use the chip reader either!

Samsung pay would be a major convenience factor for me in the current credit card climate.

So does this mean still a separate data plan? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't previous versions have their own standalone number/data plan?
To me, that's just redundant and ridiculous, if so.

What is the Samsung watch app called? Is it available in the App Store? Or is it only available through TestFlight?

Samsung Gear Lite - Just through test flight.

You sign up on the Samsung web page. Its in Korean, but US users can do it too, as the app itself is multi-language. They ask a few simple questions, which you can use google translate to view and you can answer in English. Apple sends you a link with a code and you enter that code into the test flight app and the Samsung app will then appear for you to install.

But as I write this, I think the beta sign up appears to be over :( But you can try the link yourself, if interested:

I hope it does have that level of battery life. I'm skeptical though.

The release said the battery "lasts up to four days on a single charge" but it didn't say that it lasts up to 4 days while streaming music, making calls, etc.

I could be wrong and Samsung has figured out how to do all that on a smart watch but....we'll see.

[doublepost=1472662144][/doublepost]"With a battery that lasts up to four days on a single charge, users can enjoy their music, make calls and show off their stylish smartwatch longer." WOW

In just talking about the gps usage here though. Four hours for a 300+ mah battery when other devices get more than twice that with 1/3 the battery size is just a lowball estimate IMO. Fwiw the surge is an always on device, but it's monochrome, low res, etc (great for viewing in sunlight though). Still, I think people assume that the god chip is a much more power hungry beast than it is.

As far as your second question, AW displays nothing when off.

I see. Personally if there is no always on display the watch is bordering on useless. I never thought much of always on displays until I used a Note 7, now I don't think I could live without it. I hate the lift to activate feature even more, haven't found a watch yet where its consistent, but I haven't personally tried the AW.

The watch has its own unique phone number (I think its $10 a month), but using "NumberSync" through the carrier, your watch can share your cellphone's number. So, when the watch disconnects from the phone and goes into LTE mode, it will send and receive calls as your cellphone's number.

Okay, cool. Thanks!

A great reminder that a watch can be circular and still look ugly.
Hardly. It looks amazing! I find the Apple Watch boring looking and too much like jewelry. Not my thing. But I like bulky watched like this new Samsung and the Garmin Fenix 3HR below

I think you're right there, something like $5 a month for a watch "plan". My hope is Apple is able to do some digital sim card magic and an extra monthly fee isn't needed. Though, I view cellular as more of a Want than a Need for watches at this point.

Maybe not the appropriate place to ask, but can you tell us about what, if any, limitations the gear has with iOS?

Biggest reason I haven't so much as really looked at previous gear devices is because my personal phone (iOS, if that wasn't clear lol) simply wouldn't work.

So similar to an LTE iPad, except it can sync to your cellphone number when you're out of range of the phone? However, LTE service with iPad you can turn on/off at will without penalty (unless you signed a 2-year contract with carrier, prior to buying "deal").

i find it's really good looking, but i just cant use their Tizen OS. It's hard to trust them with updates about their own unlocked phones, flagships mind you, imagine about a device the will only sell a handful. If it had Android Wear, it would have been much much better, IMO.
