I remember this well (I was being very anal about the whole thing, going to the Apple store, comparing different panels. Whew! It was exhausting.) :D

I remember being anal about it as well. And now I have my 9CDF display and actually find it more crisp than the 9CF0 one, i.e. I disagree with those here that say that Samsung's are better.

Are we sure btw these new 9CDF's and 9CF0's are the same they were with the late 2010 machines?

And another question: where do you get the information from which one is Samsung and which one LG? I must have asked this question in 3 threads now without success.

Anyway, I'm quite happy with the new display. IPS would be awesome, but I guess Apple is not quite willing to go to go there yet for one reason or another.

To identify your display
open terminal , paste
ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

the first line is your display model.

The belief is that if it starts with LP = LG screen while LTH = Samsung screen.

Post back what you have since you said your very happy with it.

I know all that and that I have an LP...=9CDF display, but my question to you all was whence the belief that this is an LG display?

My other question was if the Samsung/LG used in this gen is the same as that used in the last.

I'm pretty sure that' still unknown or unproven. Most of the threads tracking this issue seem to be certain that LP = LG. Several other posters have said that it's the same part numbers as last year (9CDF) but no one seems to know if its the same panels, etc.

And what did you end up concluding in the end? Did you actually swap your machine?

I did swap my first machine because it had stuck pixels. On the replacement, I got the panel that was considered to be the better one according to the consensus here. It didn't have any stuck or dead pixels, so I stayed with that one. When I compared the two displays in the store, I thought that the one that was considered less desirable on the forums (I can't remember which model number it was at the time) had less vibrant color, but only marginally so, and it was probably just my bias from reading the forum posts.

Ok. The one on the left is the LG.

No, wait. The one on the right is the LG. The other one is the Samsung.

Or was it the other way around? Hmmmmm...

:p

Come on! I need to be told if my macbook air is usable or not! Tell me which is better!!!!

It's funny how big of an ongoing joke this has become with everyone. The downside is a few years from now when someone is doing a search on these forums for info on the used 2011 MBA they are considering buying off eBay, they are going to assume half of the machines are defective, heh.

Is LG screen that bad? I have the lg screen 13" and I can't really feel the difference. Plus it's not like I'll be using air for more than 2 year. Eventually apple is gonna release something new and everyone is gonna sell their air and get the new model then the vs. Thing starts again

Edit* it's a bit like saying I'm not gonna get a range rover because it's owned by the Indians or i'm returning my ferrari because it's a fiat

So basically no one knows anything. And there may or may not be a difference between the two, unidentifiable, models.

Yup. Pretty much sums it up...

Have those screens been calibrated?

No not at all...the right is the 2010 and the left is 2011 lg...it is very weird because in person i can see certain details on my old one that the new one does not show at all.....

Ask and ye shall receive.

Side by side Samsung panel vs. LG panel.

Let the games begin! Which one is which? :D
The one on the right seems brighter, so I'll say it's a Samsung because some say it looks better. The one on the left looks warmer.
Here's another one.

Side by side images of a Lion.

As I sit here an try to take these pictures I am just chuckling about how alike these two panels are, and if there are any differences, I am either blind or not OCD enough... :p

P.S. Maybe I switched them this time around. Maybe I didn't. On the first one you may notice the one on the right was not plugged into AC power... :D
The one on the right is the samsung.
Three more images from different angles:

From the left.

From the right.

From the front but a little bit lower.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...
Last link: the one on the left is the samsung...

It is clear that one of the two screens looks better than the other one, at least in my eyes.

Would you consider trying some of the calibration files that are on these posts and see if it changes anything on?

My take

Ok.
Being a photographer and having a 13 incher on the way in the mail, screen quality is of great importance to me.

The only valid comparison is a side-by-side IRL, but your head-on pictures of the lion DO show a difference. I have cropped the nose portion of the lion and set them next to each other so you can see. I hope the attached file shows up for you guys.

I am talking about the image "sidebyside2.jpg"

The RIGHT panel appears to have much more contrast and sharpness, and also a bit warmer.

That being said, I recently bought a TV and compared docens of different brands. Pretty much ALL of the samsung Tvs were consistently high quality(that means bright and contrasty but not harsh, smooth gradients with lots of detail. some may say its duller and warmer than others). Many TVs have too high contrast to appear impressive in the store, but at the cost of detail and tonality. Likewise many screens have too-high sharpness at the cost of fine detail. I didnt find LG TV to be particularly good, nor did I find them to be particularly bad either. LG does not strike me as being too harsh og contrasty (like some Sony and Philips screens).

Caveat: This discrepancy could be down to poor alignment in camera, because I sure hope the green cromatic aberration around the left lions eye is from the camera lens not the screen.

I am not going to guess which is which, just point out that there IS a big difference in the photos.

Man, I'm sorry to say that your comparison is flawed. The right cutout of the lion is taken in a straight line from the front of the lens, so the viewing angles of the screen is not affecting. The left cutout of the lion is captured from an angle from the lens, so it will be affected by the screens viewing angles and maybe also by the camera lens not being equally sharp in the middle as the edges of the photo.

I guess you didnt see this:
Caveat: This discrepancy could be down to poor alignment in camera, because I sure hope the green cromatic aberration around the left lions eye is from the camera lens not the screen.

All I said is that there IS a difference in the two pictures, either from poor photography or from an actual difference in the screens.

What I'd like to see is a perfectly aligned shot of each screen (in all 3 dimensions, meaning the camera should face directly perpendicular to the screen) not in the same picture but in two separate pictures side by side with the same alignment. This would rule out most discrepancies from the camera or lens, and also the factor of viewing angle (which might even differ from screen to screen).
Basically this should be set up the same way as when photographing paintings or documents.

Finally, there is a good chance that what comes out as the most contrasty screen in such a comparison, is actually the worse screen. Too much contrast and brightness is not necessary a good thing when editing photograps. A screen with seemingly less contrast might lend itself better to hardware calibration (which I am going to do either way).
