Of course Apple has prototypes like this. And they have gotten their hands on Samsung's initial attempts. Apple has an insane R&D budget. When they talk about 1,000 no's before one yes, this is what they mean.

But this is also a niche product that Apple would never release, even if it was decent for some users. Apple just doesn't have a brand now that allows them to release stuff that could be utter crap for many users. At least when they release something horrifically expensive, it works well and the users will know that it is expensive and get a clue that this is something that they should pass on unless they have a real need for it. But this item is not expensive enough to keep Apple from being hit by tons of complaints if they released it. This is the opposite of something that "just works". This is a luxury tech device for someone who knows they won't be using it for more than 6 to 12 months. Buy it as a fun gimmick and get a few stares and questions about what you have. That is fun for enough people.

In before someone mentions the MacBook keyboards.

Not sure why all of you Apple fan boys are hating! At least someone is innovating with the form factor? What has Apple done? Rose gold? Thinner?

But I think this phone is high risk given what happened earlier, but still got to give it to Samsung!

Also, this tech could is and will continue to be rolled into laptops. That’s what is exciting for me. Personally, I hate the MacBook Touch Bar but I would love to see where this tech goes!

Man, they couldn’t even get past review units, what a stuff up. Can you imagine a 3 or 5 year old child with one of these for an hour? Eek.

You don’t need to release a product to conduct R&D. The “fan boys” are critical because this is an inferior iteration of the product that isn’t worthy of bringing to the market by Apple’s standard. Which is where most of Samsung’s product choices seem to go. They are very big in shoving a bunch of tech into a poorly conceived, clumsy product. Apple is no doubt researching foldable displays, however they won’t release a product in this space until it’s compelling.

A thick, compromised and unwieldy phone that turns into a compromised square tablet? Think I’ll pass for now.

Am I the only one who still doesn't see the point? SG Fold is a solution looking for a problem, instead created it's own problems in the process.

It's an early beta. I don't really see the point of it either right now, but I'm pretty sure that in 2-3 years all phones will be foldable and smaller tablets will have disappeared completely. It's the same as Apple when they introduced USB (too) etc.

If you build it, they will come.

We’ll probably never know, but if I had to guess I’d say <100,000.
For me, it is still amazing that people will be paying $1,980 for a phone which is basically almost the same with other high-end phone except for the folding display. Maybe if this phone can teleport me even for just a short distance then I'll buy 2 pcs.

Still don't understand why people are so into foldable phones. We have improved the glass on phone screens to be scratch resistant and durable (we have what, Gorilla glass 6 now?), and yet people are now willing to trade that for a flimsy plastic screen just so they can fold the phone.

Foldable screen is a marvelous tech improvement. Foldable phone is a poor solution looking for a problem.

Yeah rumoured yo be $2800 in Australia and the Mate X was rumoured to be $3200. My iPhone XS Max was $2399 much more than that is a joke. Especially being a beta style product.
But only the iPhone is considered overpriced. Quite funny if you think about it.

Have they provided a use case?
To show people that you have more money to burn than those iPhone users.

I really want to try this. But not at that price, especially given the issues.

HomePod would like a word with you.
The crappy part of HomePod is Siri, hardware-wise it is a good product.

It’s clear from the start that one day such screen will break. Smartphones are becoming disposable commodities.
Earphones are the truly disposable commodity emphasised by many only coming with a one-year warranty (Apple, Jaybird for example).

You shouldn't see this as a foldable phone, it's rather a foldable tablet. One can argue that this distinction is specious but given that phones that cannot be used one-handed anymore are often called phablets, I'd say one-handed vs two-handed use could be used as a criterium to distinguish different categories. Whether something fits into pants pockets (front or back) would be another criterium (and the Galaxy Fold might be pushing things in that regard).

A big screen is better than a small screen when the user is interacting with the phone, which is why phone screens have gotten bigger over the years (and also why people buy tablets despite already owning phones). On the other hand a big screen is worse than a small screen when it comes to transporting the phone, because in those situations the big screen just means additional bulk.
I'd say size [of phones] is any issue both in regard to transporting and in regard to one-handed use.

This might supplant "Bob" as the go-to poster child for ill-advised technology releases (for people of a certain age.)

Now there is a name I haven’t heard in a very long time. Microsoft Bob, LOL.

I know people want to hate on this, but at least they are innovating and pushing the market.
