I think it’s the future. iPhone and iPad screens will be foldable too one day.

If the future you speak of is 50+ years out, when a tight radius foldable glass is reality instead of science fiction, you may be correct. But even then, there will need to be significant advances in miniaturization of all components, especially the battery, because these current iterations with their double-thick form is not going to work for most people as an everyday use product.

Am I the only one who still doesn't see the point? SG Fold is a solution looking for a problem, instead created it's own problems in the process.
I think that’s the problem with the whole industry—everyone’s looking for “the next thing,” even if that thing doesn’t solve any problems.

Handheld computers are ubiquitous. Need something new to keep making that cheddar.

These foldable phone products are trash and will quickly fall in the dustbin of history.

It does provide a solution for people who constantly need to use their laptop or tablet. I have customers calling me on a Saturday evening asking for information which requires me to login to work portal and the pages don't scale to phone screen sizes but it’s still not worth $2k
I’ll happily carry my backpack with my tablet and laptop in there for now.

It's interesting that there's so much push back from people to a foldable phone when foldable phones were all there was a 15 years ago - the screen folding into the keyboard. There's gotta be some very practical solutions to screen folding onto screen work.

The problems Samsung have seem solvable and I'm happy they're helping push this tech forward.

What likely is happening is that Samsung happens to have this flexible screen tech lying around that they have probably sunk a ton of resources into developing, but with no clear way of monetising it. So rather than simply let it go to waste (classic sunk-cost fallacy), they are trying to pioneer a folding phone craze with the hopes that it will take off and spur sales of their folding screen tech to other companies.

Just another difference between an engineering-led company and a design-led one.

Waiting to see what other problems will unfold with the release of this useless tablet.

maybe useless for you...

an interesting product and starting a new phenomena which will affect them making them better and better.

Great job, Samsung! I’ll be waiting on V2 next year, though.
Great job? It is useless, software is terrible, display will damage over time in any case.It is so big It can't fit your pocket. Cmon... the only good thing is the idea. But it doesn't work in actual reality.

HomePod would like a word with you.
It has incredible sounds, Siri which could be still limited but anyway it is a feature. Form reviews I see HomePod is quite appreciated. I don't get the hate.

I still see no value proposition with this device. It's a crappy phone and a small tablet without any apps/long term support. I don't see why anyone would spend this kind of money on it, even without the obvious quality issues. Buyer beware.

I hope it doesn't have any flaws and that they've fixed the issues. Only because I'm curious if this will be a device that people actually want and will be willing to buy.

Samsung's foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, is now set to launch in September after being delayed in order for Samsung to make some design changes, Samsung announced today.

The new version of the Galaxy Fold features several design and construction improvements. The top layer, which was mistakenly peeled off by some reviewers, has been tweaked to make it clear that it's part of the display, while additional reinforcements have been added to better protect the display from external particles.

The full changes Samsung made to the Galaxy Fold are listed below:The company says it has also been working to improve the overall Galaxy Fold user experience, optimizing more apps and services for the foldable interface.

Samsung initially planned to launch the Galaxy Fold this spring, but ended up delaying the launch after several reviewers experienced broken Galaxy Fold devices after just a few days.

Some of the reviewers mistakenly pulled off the top layer of the display as it looked like a plastic screen protector, which led to display damage. Other reviewers had screen failures, while still others saw display damage due to small particles of dust getting in between the layers of the display.

Based on the changes Samsung made to the Galaxy Fold, it sounds like each of the individual issues has been addressed, and hopefully launch versions of the Galaxy Fold will hold up better than the initial review units.

Samsung says that the Galaxy Fold will be made available to consumers starting in September in select markets, with specific launch details to be shared as a launch approaches.

Samsung's Galaxy Fold, which will be one of the first foldable smartphones on the market, will cost $1,980 when it becomes available for purchase.

And yet it will still suck.

I’m very curious—is anyone here planning on buying one?

I am seriously tempted by this. I have an iPad Pro 2018, Mac mini 2018, iPad mini 2018 and an iPhone 6S Plus. I bought an iPad mini because my eyes suffer serious eyestrain when I'm on a tiny screen, so I carry around the mini which allows me to use the device for longer without eyestrain. Once I'm on a 12.9" iPad Pro I can be on it for 10 hours with no eye strain.

Anyways, because small screens give me eye strain I am seriously tempted by the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

The only reason I even hesitate is because of the across device iMessage and Phone/Facetime integration with Apple is a thing of beauty it's a killer feature for me.

Being able to set my phone down in a corner and not have to pick it up is huge for me.

The next Windows 10 update is bringing screen mirroring for Android which may be just as good if not maybe even better but that is still beta software.

I am tempted but I'll wait 2-3 months after release to see how it all plays out.
[doublepost=1564064557][/doublepost]Remember when Samsung started the "phablet" craze and people on these forums went crazy about the phone being too big?

Then iPhone brought out a similarly sized phone and it outsold the smaller iPhone?

Welcome to Phablet 2.0.

Apple will follow suit and you will all rave about it.

Have they provided a use case?

Same one as iPad mini.

You don’t need to release a product to conduct R&D. The “fan boys” are critical because this is an inferior iteration of the product that isn’t worthy of bringing to the market by Apple’s standard. Which is where most of Samsung’s product choices seem to go. They are very big in shoving a bunch of tech into a poorly conceived, clumsy product. Apple is no doubt researching foldable displays, however they won’t release a product in this space until it’s compelling.

What? It hasn’t been released yet and you are already critical?

And Apple quality, let’s talk about that!!!

How about them MacBook keyboards? how about “your holding it wrong”?, how about them MacBook screens that flicker? how about them bendable Apple phones? how about them iPhone 6 touch desease?

Yes Samsung had phones had an extra feature that had batteries explode, but Apple is not has it’s fair share of issues.

No, for two valid reasons:
1) we, those who love to post here, do not have the buying power to pay for it
2) we, who love so much to post here, are  fan boys

No us

The point seems pretty obvious to me. I wish Apple still had the balls to try stuff like this. I look at the Apple rumor roadmap and I think my Iphone X will be with me for a while longer.

A thick-ass phone that unfolds into a weird little Android tablet, for $2000? That certainly takes more balls than brains.

...if you have Apple Music and don’t mind its lack of a 3.5-mm jack and regular Bluetooth audio support.

Look, I don’t mind and sometimes I even defend the removal of the headphone jack on the iPhone and iPad. I’m not one of those guys. But not including it or even standard Bluetooth audio on a device intended solely for audio playback, and Apple’s quasi-forcing you to give them even more money through Apple Music after buying a HomePod, is patently absurd. I’m fully in the Apple hardware ecosystem at the moment, and an Apple Music subscriber, and even I won’t buy one. Not in its current state.

It’s a good product for its narrow market, sure, but there’s a reason that they’ve, by all accounts, moved so few HomePods even after dropping its price.

The balls to try what? Create a horribly flawed device that serves no real purpose other than to claim "I'M FIRST!"? No thanks, bro.
