Definitely need more competition in the mobile phone (hardware) space. Samsung may copy, it may be a bit raw, and they may face some IP challenges; nonetheless I appreciate companies willing to push Apple to release more from its skunkworks labs. There must be so much in those dungeons, held back due to lack of perfection and clear lack of competition.

And not to mention, Samsung is the only real major competitor to Apple. The Pixel is still To new.

Yeah yeah, we've heard this before. What's happens when you rush your phones to market Samsung? Oh yes, exploding batteries. Don't do it again, you'll fail miserably.

If there's no Mac news, there's no Mac news. It's not the fault of Macrumors that Apple don't care about the Mac, or displays, or routers, or proper laptops, or the iPod touch, or useful ports, or compatible products, or... what else?

I did effectively give a nod to that at the end of my post. But it will become irrelevant when Apple bins the Mac anyway, so now is as good a time as any.

And a virtual button is better? How?
It makes the phone smaller. I want the best tech/camera but can't use the plus model. This thing is so uncomfortable to operate it's not even funny (and i can palm a basketball). It also doesn't fit in my pockets, so there's that :p

Even if there is technology that Samsung is holding out on, they need to release it with their next phone. The note 7 debacle seriously hurt them.

Mac Rumours should probably change it's name.

I get more info about Samsung from this website than anywhere else.

Not to mention the fact that the Mac line of computers are barely updated these days.

MacRumors reports more than just Apple news. And for convenience factors, its nice to read what other competitors are doing, versus visiting four other tech sites to find out the same articles rehashed.

This is just a click bait thread lol.

The bezel free design of s8 is on the news for a while now. Bring it up just after a rumor that iphone wont come with new design seems like reason just to get more views.

How about you rename this site iPhonerumors' and have a little subsection called 'Macrumors' shunted away on a back page somewhere which can be updated, say, once every couple of months or so... (Apple's fault, not yours)

The data are clear that Apple is getting out of the Mac business and just milking their loyal customers for whatever they can get as they end of life their computer business. They are raising prices to ridiculous levels to maintain margins and then will complain that no one is interested in buying Macs anymore.

Last time they rushed and beat Apple to market they got explosive results. Let's see if the same plan works out this year!

I hesitate in saying if Apple or Samsung will be first to ditch the home button and have in screen Touch ID.

Samsung has the screen tech(oled), Apple has 3dtouch screen tech and force Touch home button already in the iPhone 7 and has about 1.5 years lead in the 3D Touch .
But Apple has to get the (oled) screens somewhere and will have to order the screens from Samsung. This way Samsung wil always now what is coming from Apple .

My guess:
iPhone 7s: 4.7 inch screen , updated internals, better camera, higher res (1920x1080p or 1704x960p) ips LCD screen, same design as the iPhone 7.

iPhone 7s plus: 5.5 inch screen @ 2560x1440p ips LCD , updated camera and internals, same design as the iPhone 7 plus.

iPhone 7s pro: updated internals, better camera, wireless charging, glass back, newer design, smaller bezels(slightly) curved screen, smaller lower and upper bezel, lower bezel " clickable " and touchid integrated in the entire smaller lower bezel.
5.2 inch oled @2560x1440

"We still call it MacRumors because, frankly, that's what everyone knows it by."

Yep, sometimes things change which make a name seem outmoded, (I'm thinking of 'Carphone Warehouse' in the UK) but it's better to stick by the classic name everyone knows.

Good I hope they rush it out just to beat Apple. Worked so well for them with the Note. :D

why is anyone surprised? Samsung has been thinning their bezels since the first Galaxy Edge. When has Apple started thinning their bezels.

Umm you only have to scroll down another 2 stories on the front page to get to a mac story. Too hard for some whiners?

Unless these things can run silky smooth and don't affect battery life - I really don't want unnecessary resolution bumps the eye cannot see. For a start off everything will look worse until developers re-release all their apps yet again with even higher resolution graphics, making the apps an even bigger download, all for a resolution we can't even see the difference in.

Urgh. You can see the difference. You can't see the individual pixels at normal viewing distance, but it's not about being able to see the individual pixels. The overall image looks better on a higher res display at the same distance regardless of whether you can see the pixels or not.

Even Apple admitted this when they went to "Retina HD"

Samsung will beat Apple to the punch in next year's smartphone wars by including features in its Galaxy S8 handset that have long been mooted for the 2017 "iPhone 8", such as a bezel-free wraparound OLED screen with a virtual home button embedded in the display.

Bloomberg on Thursday referred in its favored manner to "people with direct knowledge of the matter" who said that Samsung is targeting a March release for the redesigned S8, but that launch could be delayed by about a month as the company adopts tougher testing procedures in the wake of the Note 7 debacle. Apple's smartphone launch cycle usually runs on a yearly September release.

Samsung is understandably wary of the dangers of rushing its smartphone development after quality control reportedly suffered in the company's race to release the feature-rich, but ultimately fire-prone, Note 7.
The bezel-less devices will come in sizes similar to Samsung's 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch S7 Edge models. Samsung is also said to be introducing a "significantly differentiated" voice-activated personal AI assistant in the handsets that will be able to send text messages, make phone calls and manage calendar schedules. The AI technology will come courtesy of Viv Labs, which was founded by the developers of Apple's Siri and acquired by Samsung in October. Samsung is considering scrapping dual-cameras on the S8 due to high manufacturing costs, Bloomberg sources said. According to a separate report, the models will also drop the headphone jack.

Chinese phone maker Xiaomi made a splash back in October by debuting an almost bezel-less display with the Mi Mix "concept phone", boasting a screen that covers 91 percent of the front of the handset. While Xiaomi's limited-availability phone was more a proof of concept than a device ready for the mass market, both Samsung and Apple will be relying on the mainstream appeal of similarly standout features to boost unit sales in a stagnant market short on innovation.

In the near term, Samsung is desperate to bounce back from the impact of this year's Note 7 recall and discontinuation, which could end up costing the company more than $6 billion. The Korean-based firm reported a 17 percent drop in net income in the three months ending September, and has advised investors to expect a multibillion dollar slump in earnings in the December and March quarters as its market share struggles to recover.

As well as a bezel-free OLED display and virtual home button, Apple is said to be readying an all-glass casing and wireless charging for its 10th anniversary iPhone, with the possibility of a new 5-inch premium model and two lower tier aluminum models also in the offing.

Great, I can't wait for the next version of Touchwizz...

Said absolutely no one ever.

Good. Go ahead Samsung. Rush to release your Galaxy 8 ahead of the iphone 8. Especially after what happened to the Galaxy 7. You should be less worried about beating Apple to the punch and more concerned with releasing a smartphone that doesn't...OH...I dont know...EXPLODE! Lol.

Nothing to fear, I'm sure it will catch fire, damage your retina's and be banned from every government, school and hospital building.
