Definitely need more competition in the mobile phone (hardware) space. Samsung may copy, it may be a bit raw, and they may face some IP challenges; nonetheless I appreciate companies willing to push Apple to release more from its skunkworks labs. There must be so much in those dungeons, held back due to lack of perfection and clear lack of competition.

Google is going to come hard in late 2017 and will the the other big player. 2016 was a push out the door to get a footing. Pixel's big thing is the camera - which is really quite amazing compared to my wife's 6S.

We have double CPU speeds now, in the iPhone. Why doesn't that count as innovation?

it does, but people in this thread are complaining that this is becoming iPhoneRumors not MacRumors , I am trying to explain mobile devices is where all the innovations are now so more rumors on that.

It makes the phone smaller. I want the best tech/camera but can't use the plus model. This thing is so uncomfortable to operate it's not even funny (and i can palm a basketball). It also doesn't fit in my pockets, so there's that :p
Serious question. How small are your pockets? My 11 year old daughter has a J7 that fits in the back pocket of her jeans. She's 4'6" (1.37m) and 65lbs (29.5kg). If a child that small can drive a 5.5" phone, how is it so difficult for an adult? But really, how small are your pockets?

We all know the story... Samsung beats iPhone to the punch, dominates the specs and features comparison.

iPhone still comes out on top due to superior software, usability, and real-world speed.

Same story every year.

Apple would have settled on the design of the next iPhone by now. If they are introducing a new form factor next year, there is no way they can copy the design of a product released in march and still make it in time for a September announcement.

People seem to think that copying something is as simply as snapping your fingers.

To copy, one does not have to wait for product launch. A lot of these designs etc which are worked on way before production, are already known by the competition one way or another. I don't even believe companies like Apple/Samsung expect to believe that their top secret "designs" aren't known by the competitors, there are just too many avenues for it to get leaked - it is impossible to trace or enforce an NDA.

Not saying Apple are copying Samsung or vice versa, but merely stating, someone could release something 6 months, 1 month, 1 week after the competitor, or even 1 month BEFORE the competitor and have actually copied them.

The release time line is not conclusive of who came up with what first.

Regular jeans, i'm 6ft. 185lbs. iPhone sticks out of my back pocket, if placed in my front one, it's uncomfortable to move. I can wear a "man purse" or a jacket right?

Samsung will beat Apple to the punch in next year's smartphone wars by including features in its Galaxy S8 handset that have long been rumored for the 2017 "iPhone 8", such as a bezel-free wraparound OLED screen with a virtual home button embedded in the display.

Bloomberg on Thursday referred in its favored manner to "people with direct knowledge of the matter" who said that Samsung is targeting a March release for the redesigned S8, but that launch could be delayed by about a month as the company adopts tougher testing procedures in the wake of the Note 7 debacle. Apple's smartphone launch cycle usually runs on a yearly September release.

Samsung is understandably wary of the dangers of rushing its smartphone development after quality control reportedly suffered in the company's race to release the feature-rich, but ultimately fire-prone, Note 7.
The bezel-less devices will come in sizes similar to Samsung's 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch S7 Edge models. Samsung is also said to be introducing a "significantly differentiated" voice-activated personal AI assistant in the handsets that will be able to send text messages, make phone calls and manage calendar schedules. The AI technology will come courtesy of Viv Labs, which was founded by the developers of Apple's Siri and acquired by Samsung in October. Samsung is considering scrapping dual-cameras on the S8 due to high manufacturing costs, Bloomberg sources said. According to a separate report, the models will also drop the headphone jack.

Chinese phone maker Xiaomi made a splash back in October by debuting an almost bezel-less display with the Mi Mix "concept phone", boasting a screen that covers 91 percent of the front of the handset. While Xiaomi's limited-availability phone was more a proof of concept than a device ready for the mass market, both Samsung and Apple will be relying on the mainstream appeal of similarly standout features to boost unit sales in a stagnant market short on innovation.

In the near term, Samsung is desperate to bounce back from the impact of this year's Note 7 recall and discontinuation, which could end up costing the company more than $6 billion. The Korean-based firm reported a 17 percent drop in net income in the three months ending September, and has advised investors to expect a multibillion dollar slump in earnings in the December and March quarters as its market share struggles to recover.

As well as a bezel-free OLED display and virtual home button, Apple is said to be readying an all-glass casing and wireless charging for its 10th anniversary iPhone, with the possibility of a new 5-inch premium model and two lower tier aluminum models also in the offing.

Technically they can't beat Apple to the Virtual Button, its already on the iPhone 7, its virtual, cause there is mechanical parts of a button, there's only a touch sensor which will be the same if the LCD screen is attached underneath.

Apple is having another boring design, they better hurry up and rush it out as fast as possible.

the truth is Samsung has been beating Apple when it comes to design lately.. Just look at their edge lines.. It makes the iPhone 7 look like crap [...] I can't wait to see the GS8 design and compare it to the new iPhone 6, Apple releasing next year " The 7S "...
Excluding the 'Edge' version, the design of the Galaxy S line hasn't really changed much either. But almost nobody mentions that or cares about that because Samsung phones are about specs and not how they look like, while iPhones are defined to a significant degree by how they look like.

How is this competition? All of the features listed have been rumored for the next iPhone. Of course, the consumer has been talking about edge to edge design, wireless charging, etc for years. Don't get me wrong. I am not knocking Samsung for the design but it seems like every vendor is looking at the same "innovations". Like the article described, theres a rush to gain "mainstream appeal of similarly standout features to boost unit sales in a stagnant market short on innovation." The "competition" is for new users or those who don't already have a preference. By now, if you're a Samsung/Android devotee', you're sticking with it or moving to another Android device. If you're an iPhone or an Apple disciple you're sticking with an iPhone.
The problem for Apple and Samsung is that folks are figuring out that you don't need a new phone every one or two years. If a desktop or laptop can last 4-6 years so can a phone. I'm still using my iPhone 6. I will probably upgrade to an 8 but I won't be an early adopter because there are bound to be immediate issues.

Re; what I bolded from your quote: 100% agree with this sentiment. Smartphone used to be the proving ground for innovation and new tech. Now? You can get a $150-200 smartphone that performs just as well as any flagship phone. Moto has a new ad that sums up the phone market perfectly. The message in the 1st half of the ad is spot on. The gimmicky add ons in the 2nd half? Ignore those, the initial message is the point.

Samsung bezels are not as ridiculous as the ones found on an iPhone. Physical hb HAS TO GO on the next iPhone or im jumping the ship. Making an old and boring design red, won't make me stay. Step your game up Jonny...
home button? that's your deal breaker? A reasonable person can find flaws in the iPhone, but to claim that the presence of a physical home button is reason enough to eschew an entire brand of hardware seems a bit...hyperbolic.

Well, Samsung has covered the rumors for Apple's next phone pretty well that have been out for 6 months or more - poor Samsung, always copying.

Frankly though, I think Samsung's area of worry should be Google, if I was getting an Android I'd choose a Pixel and its basically stock Android over Samsung and their desire to "own" the operating system and its own separate payment system and... - which isn't something that adding physical features to the phone fix.
