If they don't already, Apple should start making up rumours. Like a new colour wth polka dots or glitter, just to see what Samsung do.

Apple should do a commercial with people's Galaxy Notes exploding. People with Galaxy notes not being allowed to board a plane while someone holding an iPhone walks right by them and shrugs. Lol. Why not? Samsung makes fun of Apple all the time. Fair game.

It makes the phone smaller. I want the best tech/camera but can't use the plus model. This thing is so uncomfortable to operate it's not even funny (and i can palm a basketball). It also doesn't fit in my pockets, so there's that :p

Yeah the plus is not really a pocketable device, unfortunately. But the removal of the home button would honestly harm the device in my opinion. Would make it much more difficult to operate. And I'd imagine that they won't necessarily make it smaller, maybe just use that space for a screen (should they decide to go that route).

So does this mean Apple will copy Samsung now?
It's still copying when you study all the leaks and patents along with info from your division that supplies screens and other parts to Apple, then try to beat them to market with their idea.

How about you rename this site iPhonerumors' and have a little subsection called 'Macrumors' shunted away on a back page somewhere which can be updated, say, once every couple of months or so... (Apple's fault, not yours)
a) iPhonerumors.com is already taken
b) you don't change your name and URL if they have such a name recognition and brand value just because the company you are covering has broadened its portfolio
c) there already is a section called 'Mac Blog', if you only want to see Mac-related articles, just use this URL: https://www.macrumors.com/mac/

LOL so many Apple snowflakes here. We get it, you guys are die hard Apple fans and so am i, but the truth is Samsung has been beating Apple when it comes to design lately.. Just look at their edge lines.. It makes the iPhone 7 look like crap and yeah their Note 7 line exploded i get that too but lets not forget iPhones had it shares of problems too in the past, maybe not as bad as the Note 7 but oh well... I can't wait to see the GS8 design and compare it to the new iPhone 6, Apple releasing next year " The 7S "...

I personally think the S8 is shaping up to be a nice phone with some big changes. Curious to see what how this plays out. Competition is needed and Samsung seems to be pushing.

How is this competition? All of the features listed have been rumored for the next iPhone. Of course, the consumer has been talking about edge to edge design, wireless charging, etc for years. Don't get me wrong. I am not knocking Samsung for the design but it seems like every vendor is looking at the same "innovations". Like the article described, theres a rush to gain "mainstream appeal of similarly standout features to boost unit sales in a stagnant market short on innovation." The "competition" is for new users or those who don't already have a preference. By now, if you're a Samsung/Android devotee', you're sticking with it or moving to another Android device. If you're an iPhone or an Apple disciple you're sticking with an iPhone.
The problem for Apple and Samsung is that folks are figuring out that you don't need a new phone every one or two years. If a desktop or laptop can last 4-6 years so can a phone. I'm still using my iPhone 6. I will probably upgrade to an 8 but I won't be an early adopter because there are bound to be immediate issues.

but that launch could be delayed by about a month

they should better wait for iPhone8 release to make it perfect copy.. doing it first will be a disaster.. and there is no reason to make it first, everybody knows they are just copying.

Urgh. You can see the difference. You can't see the individual pixels at normal viewing distance, but it's not about being able to see the individual pixels. The overall image looks better on a higher res display at the same distance regardless of whether you can see the pixels or not.

Even Apple admitted this when they went to "Retina HD"
It is true only to a certain point after which it is no longer true. That point is ~5"@1080. You have confirmation bias.

I'm not sure why people care. Google makes the only android phone that matters.

to people who says this website became more of iphone rumors than Mac,
Its just a fact of life and its not 2001 any more.

iPhones are the new PCs, I won't be surprised to learn people update their computers every 5 years.
There has not been any real innovation in that area either in the past 5 years or so. Compare to mid
90s when we had cd-burners, LCDs, and double CPU speed every 2 years or so.

Samsung bezels are not as ridiculous as the ones found on an iPhone. Physical hb HAS TO GO on the next iPhone or im jumping the ship. Making an old and boring design red, won't make me stay. Step your game up Jonny...

I have never once used my iPhone and thought to myself......"you know what this phone needs; less home button"!!!

"We still call it MacRumors because, frankly, that's what everyone knows it by."

Yep, sometimes things change which make a name seem outmoded, (I'm thinking of 'Carphone Warehouse' in the UK) but it's better to stick by the classic name everyone knows.
How 'bout "Apple Computer, Inc." which changed, and "iTunes Store" which hasn't.

The rumours about a bezel-less iPhone 8 implied Apple had developed tech so it could place the camera, speaker, fingerprint scanner, etc under the screen. Samsung heard the idea and can suddenly implement it, too? How? Or was it actually quite easy to do, in which case why wasn't the iPhone 7 the major redesign? Now it'll look like Apple have copied Samsung.

Copying Apple rumors seems to have been Samsung's strategy for years now. It is pitiful to watch.

Last time they rushed and beat Apple to market they got explosive results.

People keep repeating that magazine rumor, but the facts are:

The Note 5 was released on Aug 21, 2015. The Note 7 was released on Aug 2, 2016. So any supposed "rush to release" would have involved at most three weeks as compared to the previous year. That's very little time.

More importantly, the battery overheat happened so rarely as a percentage of units, that three weeks of more field testing almost certainly wouldn't have made any difference at all. Heck, it's been many weeks and they still don't know what specifically caused it.

It's no different from the way that Apple's field testing didn't show antenna or bending problems. That wasn't because they rushed.

It's all because field testers are relatively few and usually can't operate completely in the open, so they miss things that millions of normal users might run across very quickly.

Even if there is technology that Samsung is holding out on, they need to release it with their next phone. The note 7 debacle seriously hurt them.

It hurt them a bit financially, but surveys show it didn't hurt them much at all with respect to potential buyers.

Turns out that Note purchasers are as loyal as iPhone purchasers.

So what exactly is the button on my 7 if it isn't virtual?

I don't think a smooth device with zero buttons, with no frame of reference (by touch) is a good idea. I can assume the visually impaired market (which Apple claims to support) woud strongly dislike such a change as well.

We have double CPU speeds now, in the iPhone. Why doesn't that count as innovation?

In that time they also released the Edge galaxy phones, many lower end phones, as well as the regular Galaxy models. I can't claim to know what is going on in that company, or how it works, however there are many moving parts moving at a relatively quick rate of speed.

It's not exactly a great recipe for solid & reliable products. FWIW I am saying this as a fan of some of their products.

While I love my iPhones, I too feel that Apple is moving about with the needle too close to redline as well. I strongly think that Apple should announce their new models early, and test them in the wild for a long period of time, like they did with the original iPhone. It sure as hell got people interested in the phone, and likely helped avoid some problems. Likely would have resolved some of the problems they had with other products as well.

So now Samsung will copy even before the original product is released!!!

They did it once before when the rumours for iPhone 6 with a curved glass display surfaced, but they misinterpreted the rumour, overcooked it and and put a gimmicky display in the curve of the glass too.

What Apple were really working on was this:

And Samsung had produced a phone which looked like it had had a stroke.

I don't like the curve. It feels tacked on like Samsung did it more so Apple could do it right and then they could just copy the Apple version.

Its like Samsung is releasing a reference implementation of the thing that Apple will ultimately perfect.
