Working on my X280 Thinkpad. Instead of reaching for the mouse, or trackpad, or red stick, I just touch the screen. It is a convenience.

isn't the mouse closer than the screen? when I use a macbook, the touchpad is the closest thing to my hand. actually my hand is on top of the trackpad

Good question. It might at times. Usually when I am working on pc, hand noting documents / records Ron other ancillary activities it is at times easier to touch the screen instead of reaching for pointer device. Drawing pinger along for a hi lite. Using a pencil to circle or mark. It varies. For me touch is another input method that makes my workflow more efficient.

Think about iPad Pro on Magic Keyboard. Or Surface Touch with keyboard. Flexibility for me is key.

well yeah, if you could have them both that would be better I won't argue with that

I'd love to see iPad Pro with s8 ultra's screen size and multi-tasking ability.
That would be my dream machine.

I genuinely love Apple's eco system and that's why my stuffs are mostly Apple, but boy as far as iPadOS is concerned, it's the only limiting factor of an iPad Pro.

I'm really torn as to which one of these two to pick. I am fully invested in the apple echo system BUT I need something I can use as a second windows screen for work purposes. I am aware that the Samsung tab s can be linked to a windows 10 and up laptop wirelessly and used as a secondary or extension of the display without any additional software. Can anyone tell me if that is possible with the iPad . I am trying to stay away from third party software as my job would not allow an installation of any additional software on my work laptop. i would use the tablet for media consumption and gaming too (PS5 and gamepass).

thanks in advance

That’s precisely the point: there’s no need to use a touchscreen when you have a keyboard and in portrait, like in MacBooks. So it’s not a stupid argument: some people just want the iPad to become a touchscreen MacBook, instead of a very good tablet. Value is much higher in the second case.
Thats again, very stupid. Touch is what makes the ipad special and so usefull, the apple Pencil etc is what makes it much more comfortable to use than a macbook.

I have never used my iPad in Portrait mode. Every media item, every website, even the software is usually made to be used or viewn in Landscape mode.

why do you need touch screen? Unless you are using a pen to draw, the keyboard+mouse is a far more superior method (and precise) to control the computer. In fact, Apple sells a keyboard for the ipad because the touchscreen is not enough all the time.
Because a Touchscreen is absolutly enough for media consumption, easier to use and much more flexible/compact.

But i would never write a long text with a Touch-keyboard, thats why apple offers a hardware one. So when i want to use my iPad like a Laptop-replacement (which Apple advertises) i need both worlds. A nice Tablet with easy to use haptics and Apps buit the capabilities, to plug it into a magic keayboard or my USB-C Workstation Arrangement to be produtive.

The iPad hardware is capabler of doing that, but the software sucks so hard, that its obvious that Apple limits it.

if you are just looking for media consumption yes take an iPad but was talking using it as a working tool as you said when the nitty gritty is needed you pull out the keyboard

Samsung have upped their game on updates...4 yrs and 5 yrs for security....https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-android-updates-1148888/

What's dogwater about multitasking on the Samsung tablets especially the newer uses? I have an S8+ that I can test out. When was the last time that you are informed on updates for Samsung S tablets? The S8 and future ones will get 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates.
Well said ...Apple is trash.... camera in wrong place, cannot pair to a tv, no multitasking, Sammy can even be used on a pc ..DEX!

Ironically software more than hardware is what is keeping both the iPad PRO and the Galaxy TAB S8 Ultra ahead or behind each other.

Between the S8 Ultra and the iPad PRO they trade blows in different areas with the S8 Tab Ultra having the advantage when it comes to giving you the tools to do what you want and the iPad giving you access to the best tablet apps.

The Tab S8 Ultra is a lot less powerful hardware wise than the iPad PRO but it compensates with features.
Check the following videos to really understand how far ahead Samsung One UI is when compared to iPad OS.

Things like just play and pausing playback with your pen, or instantly being able to select anything from any screen and copy or share it between apps. Or generating gifs from any video your watching and so on and on.

But the key driver between choosing an iPad or the S8 Ultra, more than anything else is if you think Apple will unlock the potential of iPadOS or not with iPadOS 16
I’m not even talking about supporting more powerful Mac M1 apps although I think that’s essential.
If the iPadOS 16 is just an incremental update without clear improvements to multitasking, sharing things between apps, improved usability and customizability features like those found in the Tab S8 Ultra. Or the useful interactive widgets Android supports, than I’m afraid the Galaxy Tab makes a lot more sense for someone looking to buy a new tablet.
Don’t forget that Android gives a lot more freedom to do what you can do.

The S8 Ultra is real competition that leaves Apple no choice other than really improving the iPadOS and their pencil features.
I wouldn’t buy the S8 Ultra yet until Apple‘s next event that is just one month away because right now software is the only thing limiting the iPad PRO from crushing the competition.

If you buy the S8 Ultra and Apple ends up releasing an iPad OS that is on par or surpasses the features found on Samsung One UI and Android 12L you’ll have buyers regret. If the iPadOS fails to reach expectations you can buy the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra with confidence. Keep this in mind. OS update support means nothing if Apple or Samsung don’t do meaningful improvements to their OS. Apple is currently lagging behind Samsung One UI on Android 12 when it comes to multitasking and other features. If Apple doesn’t step up than its time to look elsewhere.
