its a dim, low PPI, slow 60hz panel with a bunch of TV bloatware. Not suitable for mac what so ever and offers nothing but downgrades compared to the studio display. Besides the design of the stand they have nothing in common. If people are considering a studio display alternative its either Dell 8k display, the OG LG mac display, or the glossy Eve spectrum 4k. At least the latter offers promotion to make up for the pixel deficit. Even the studio display and the XDR display offers a poor, dated, monitor experience. This display offers nothing toward that

For my purposes the choice of a Mac Studio and Monitor was the proverbial rock and hard place situation. I , like many, assumed that Apple would upgrade the 27" MAC the same as they did the 24" Mac. When that did not happen, and it does not look like it will, I had my choice of going for more than I needed (Mac Studio) or less than I needed (24"). I am not monitor savvy and I ordered the Apple display because I want something made for Apple by Apple. A monitor that serves a TV, Office 365 etc. holds no attraction for me. I want something that is solid, long lasting, and made for my system. I do a lot of photography, Photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar etc. The computer and display are work tools for me.

I now have the Mac Studio and I am waiting on the Studio Display to ship. It is supposed to be her by the 27th of this month, but there has been no movement.

My Studio Display has just been upgraded from "Processing" to "Preparing to Ship" First movement in a month since I ordered it.

IMHO It's a TV that doubles as a monitor.

  • It's 60hz, so not a gaming monitor
  • It's not color accurate
  • It's webcam, speakers and mic are very so-so
  • It's BIG
It'd probably be great for kids bedrooms or dorm rooms where it might come down to a space-saving choice between a TV OR Monitor as a companion to their laptop.

The M8 is not the same market as a studio display or other (better) 4k monitors out there (which can be made "smart" with a $20 TV box). It's not designed as a tool like the ASD, it's a lifestyle device.

The only similarities the ASD and M8 really share is that they both display images, have built in speakers and webcam. The latter not even being built in to the M8.

As computer displays go, the selling point for the M8 is SIZE, for better or worse.

Why bother, you are comparing 4k vs 5k. I can never go lower than 5k. 5k offers so much more screenspace!
70% more room!
No, it does not. You can work on any 4K display in the same res as on the 5K display. The dfference is only in pixel density and anti-aliasing, which can be adjustable. So if someone says that picture seems blurry on 4K, it's just a few steps through system settings.

How is the M8 display comparable to Apple's Studio? It's like comparing a Honda CR-V in to a Porsche Carrera; both are great in many respects, but there are plenty of reasons why one costs more.

The M8 has noticeably lower peak brightness at 400 nits. The pixel density on the 32" 4K screen is obviously going to be less. Turning your head across 32" of screen is more annoying than across 27" of screen. M8 can display fewer colors on paper, and the reviewer in the video clearly states that it's noticeably in real life, too.

With all that considered, is the M8 such a steal at $700? You can get quite a few fantastic 4K 27" displays around the same brightness for a few hundred less. Unless you specifically want a 32" screen, I'd say go for the 27" 4K options out there.
The Apple Studio Display is no Porsche Carrera. Maybe the XDR is but not the SD.

I own a samsung 32" 4K display and it's amazing. It's got lots of real estate which makes it perfect for coding. In the distance I'm sitting I can't tell the difference between a real retina display. It's got the same real estate as the 6K apple display only with less pixels. And I only bought it for 400€ !!!

You must be sitting 10m from the monitor or have a poor eye sight

Here’s the big thing. Consumers the majority of people don’t need any of apples stand alone displays. They are niche and will remain niche. With this $700 display does is provide excellent affordability , dual use and a much higher purchasing base.
Apples displays are niche. If you use them for work then that’s all and we’ll. But for normal everyday use this is far more than enough. And that’s exactly what 90% of the people in the market for a display are looking for.

I had the M7. The built in features were nice, the VA panel was dark and terrible. I returned it. The LG UP850 I replaced it with is much more worth the money, and I don’t really miss the smart features.
I wonder if the M8 is the same panel, or a similar panel. I don't really need super high brightness, but if it suffers from VA's usual off-axis issues, that's a hard pass.

Anyhow, what I want is a 29-30" 5K panel. I have a 27" 5K iMac, and I find the screen is too small for 5K. The default font sizing is not ideal at my preferred seating distance. If I sit closer then I have more problems focusing on the screen.

4K 32" is not ideal for me either, since I would prefer more on-screen real estate in terms of actual resolution.

So, I'm currently using a 30" 2.5K Apple Cinema HD Display. IMO Apple nailed the non-Retina pixel density way back in 2004 at ~100 ppi, and an exact doubling/quadrupling of its resolution for "Retina" at ~200 ppi would be perfect. A 30" 5120x3200 Apple monitor would rock.

There is no way in heaven or earth that I can get used to anything less that 5K Retina, even if the price is 1/3" of what I paid for my pair of ASDs VESA Mount. Oh wait, the Samsung M8 does not support VESA mount ;) BTW, I thought the ASD camera and mic were bad until I saw this video showing the M8's cam and mic  Now I feel much better about the ASD camera LOL.

That is an awesome setup. For the vertical oriented Studio Display, does the camera/software automatically orient? Mics still pickup well?

I'm still wondering why you buy the studio display vs a whole iMac which is nearly or similarly priced..? Ok, so that's only a 4k display.. But other than that? Either the display is too expensive or the iMac is too cheap.. :)
to get 27" instead of 24"
