27 inch for me is really to small. I don't want to be like all those peoples in their promo videos that use 2 side by side. That's probably what Apple wants, you buy 2 but then the cost is getting ridiculous. Peoples are gloating about 5k, 6k, 7k...Jeez I kind of notice the image on the 27inch is small much more then the number of ks.

This is awesome. I feel like a fool for buying the Studio Display ?
Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ll get you the Samsung display and even throw in a Chromebook for you. This way we can trade and I could have your ugly Mac and Studio Display and you’ll never have to worry about them again. I’ll suffer the indignation using them while you cruise the web on your newly acquired Chromebook and Samsung display ?

I wonder if the M8 is the same panel, or a similar panel. I don't really need super high brightness, but if it suffers from VA's usual off-axis issues, that's a hard pass.

Anyhow, what I want is a 29-30" 5K panel. I have a 27" 5K iMac, and I find the screen is too small for 5K. The default font sizing is not ideal at my preferred seating distance. If I sit closer then I have more problems focusing on the screen.

4K 32" is not ideal for me either, since I would prefer more on-screen real estate in terms of actual resolution.

So, I'm currently using a 30" 2.5K Apple Cinema HD Display. IMO Apple nailed the non-Retina pixel density way back in 2004 at ~100 ppi, and an exact doubling/quadrupling of its resolution for "Retina" at ~200 ppi would be perfect. A 30" 5120x3200 Apple monitor would rock.
The off axis was just awful. You have to sit extremely far from it otherwise the vignette effect is horrible, and I was also not concerned with the brightness when buying it as I use it in a mainly dark environment but it was so dim even at the highest settings, I wouldn’t bother to watch tv on it from bed vs. my iPad which was half the reason I wanted it.

Looks like the M8 is another VA panel. I’m not surprised as most Samsung TVs are VA because of the slightly improved contrast/black levels, and off-angle is less of an issue when you’re sitting on a couch. It’s going to be an awful experience as a monitor, I would recommend staying away from this one. Even with the (slightly) improved typical brightness to 300nits from the M7’s 250. It also suffered from horrible pixel response time, and dramatically worse color accuracy compared to my LG.

Apple swung the bat and missed with their product.
Hard to believe you can’t airplay or use a studio display as a tv monitor or as a smart TV/iPad with an addition of a Bluetooth keyboard. What were they thinking? I’ve been saying that about Apple since 2006 with the transition to Intel and here I’m saying it again.
All these products are missing the OTA tv plug.

That M8 webcam audio is horrible. I'm not even counting that weird background noise, whatever it is. Dan just sounded like he was inside a sock.

For the money and features it has this product is awesome. No doubt the Studio Display still wins out on image quality, spatial audio and the three mic array.
Image quality is the only thing many people would be worried about. Most people who don't hate their co-workers or clients already use a good quality headset for conference calls, and while I'm sure there would be more than a few "minimalist" types who might like to listen to the sound through their monitor to keep their desks more clear, most people will still opt for external speakers, simply because even a middling set of computer speakers still sound better than those in the Studio Display.

It's just a shame that Samsung is still using a cheap plastic back to the monitor.
Strange, I've never had a problem with all the cheap plastic monitors I've used. Are Mac users so hard on their hardware that they need a reinforced aluminum enclosure just to keep their stuff from breaking? Because I've literally never seen a situation where an aluminum case on a monitor has offered any real benefit, other than to improve the aesthetic of the monitor when looking at it from the back or side.

Now, the lack of VESA mounting capabilities out of the box - that's something worth complaining about. I'm hoping that doesn't become some weird trend.

This is why I am very interested in the size of the rumored 7K display.

Would it be 36" then do you think?
The next Apple ProDisplay XDR will be an 8K monitor considering Apple is set on iPhone 14 Pro to be able to capture and record 8K it only makes sense. I would be surprised if it were a 10K ProDisplay XDR but that would mean the old innovative and surprising Apple which has been put in the back burner for sometime unfortunately.

I must admit that I really do not care much for smart features on a monitor. AirPlay is a nice thing in theory, but then again: when you come home with your laptop you wanna charge it most likely anyway. Might as well plug it into your monitor then, eh? So I guess I would much prefer a better panel and for that skip the built in android set top box.

Other than that .... it's hard to hate on a monitor when apple's only alternatives are three times as expensive (assuming you want the stand). You get what you pay for, and getting a monitor that's half as good for a third of the price sounds like a win for most people.

The sad reality is that many people don't even realize when they are driving their display at a non-native resolution (my wife does this all the time in games ). They certainly won't mind 4K@32 inch - scaled UI or not. So I feel like for someone that just wants to desktop-ify their macbook and has it double as a TV .... that's a perfectly fine monitor for a reasonable price that's actually not totally ugly.

This display should be roughly 135 PPI. That's pretty low, and I think that makes it much better for Windows than Mac, since Windows 10 font rendering is much more tolerant of low PPI than the new Mac OS's.

I've found every Mac OS after High Sierra requires 220 PPI to give me crisp text. Up until High Sierra, the recent Mac OS's looked good down to ~160 ppi (which you can get with a 4K 27"), because of native subpixel text rendering; HS is the last OS that offered this. [You can implement it using a Terminal command in Mojave but, perhaps because Mojave wasn't natively designed for subpixel text rendering, it doesn't look as good.]

Windows 10, by contrast, seems to be better optimized for lower PPI (likely in recognition of the fact that most Windows users have lower-PPI displays).

It looks like it was recorded through a potato. :D

Seriously though, Apple and Samsung both have a problems with their WebCams. I don’t understand why this technology can’t be improved significantly, when it’s been a drawback for years.

Depends on the seating distance. I would actually prefer 200 ppi for Mac desktops, as it allows for the monitor to be placed further back a bit without the text becoming too small. Or else something like 250+ ppi and a ton of different scaling options.

and (I don't think - did skip a page back there... :) ) to think, nobody has even mentioned the fact that with the Samsung you also get incredible quantities of, what I'd call, fairly invasive content recognition and tracking enabled by default, not to mention absolutely NO support for Dolby Vision (the most preferred HDR format for streaming services... - ok so they'll drop to standard HDR10 but still...))!

60Hz at that price? Yuck!

You can buy M32U 144Hz built-in KVM as well with USB-C Display-Alt mode. Display is Display, unless you care about the fancy aesthetic around the panel with useless spec / performance. Hate the stand just get a desk mount.

TV is another story. Do you really sit at different distance when using 27" vs 32" monitors? Sitting much further than usual is not a pleasant experience for most and it defeats the purpose of having a larger monitor.
Sigh. READ THE ENTIRE COMMENT. Look at the image. 4K 32" becomes 'retina' at 25 inches. Which is about how far away I sit when I'm at my desk.

The entire point of my comment seems to have eluded you.

That is an awesome setup. For the vertical oriented Studio Display, does the camera/software automatically orient? Mics still pickup well?
Yes, the camera automatically switch to vertical mode as the ASD has a gyroscope. Mics work the same. I can switch between cameras during a FaceTime call or Zoom meeting.
