Of course this was coming. No phones will have 3.5mm jacks in 5 years.

Apple once again leads the way in dropping outdated technology to drag us into the future.

Nah not really. Apple just lead the sheep. There is a difference between innovating and sheep herding.

I guess this is further proof that Samsung really do copy Apple.

But they don't know when to stop, people want a headphone jack but they just want to copy everything Apple does. Idiots.
People want VHS players built into their TV's too, but thank God nobody makes them anymore.

We can rip on Samsung all we want for copying Apple. But hey, at least they're using USB-C instead of stupid Lightning.

Apple has been one of the pioneers of USB-C implementation, yet they don't even want to use it in their mobile devices....It's SUCH a HUGE inconvenience!
HOW? EXACTLY?

Nothing is free and you'd be deluded to believe Apple have given us stuff out of the plain old goodness of their hearts. Did you notice that the nice plastic box the headphones usually come in was missing? No, they got shot of that for cardboard and that's where the money for your free adapter came from. ...
Delusion can be found in the part bolded above.
You have absolutely no proof of the claim in bold.

Can’t wait to see what the echo chamber of the gadget bloggers have to say.
Will Nily Patel of the Verge make another drunken post about how it’s a crime against humanity, and how only Hitler and Apple would be so degenerate to remove a redundant plug.

So all the people who said they were going to Samsung...

Apple should have jumped to USB-C when they did this. Big time Misstep

They have inductive charging. That's everything, but not wireless.

Say what you want but, not having to plug a wire in means wireless.
[doublepost=1481071202][/doublepost]
I wouldn't call it wireless, more like "full contact with a pad that is plugged into the wall".

When Apple comes out with their wireless charging try to use their charger without plugging it into the wall. The only difference I see is the distance from the charger.

But I think nobody beats Apple to the fact that u can't connect your new iPhone to your new MacBook yet.

:D

Sure you can. A highly rated tiny inline (no cable stub) adapter costing only $4 and you're good to go. Or, just buy a USB C to Lightning cable.

Still, some people will whine anyway.

Everyone is hoping USB C for the next iPhone, yes. USB was never outdated, its connector was...and it changed more over the past 15 years than Apple changed connectors too. Not to mention, before the iPhone, virtually every phone on the market had its own proprietary connector.

I'm not sure which phones you had but, the phones I had back then used mini usb. That was true for the very first phones I had. Like the Motorola bag phone and my first Nokia candy bar phones.

The image I have of 'Same-sung' right now is that of a child hiding behind the skirt of its mother.

Apple took the pain of forging this path and Samsung are happy to be swept along in Apple's wake as usual.

Shameless!

Actually, it IS a huge inconvenience. Especially if you're one who enjoys owning Apple's newest products. Can you use Lightning headphones on a Mac? NO. Can you plug in your iPhone into your new MacBook Pro using the same cable that you use to plug it into the wall? NO. You have to purchase a separate cable. Can you use the headphones that you use with your new MacBook Pro with your iPhone? NO. These are all major inconveniences. Whereas, if both products simply used USB-C, ZERO of these issues would exist.

Well I find it very easy that lightning charges iOS devices and Mac accessories, so I have multiple cables and docks at the bedside, office desk, studio and anywhere else I work. iOS devices just get plugged into these - I don't even use the cable that comes with the iPhone or any of the accessories in the box. Especially not the lightning headphones - i've not used Apple's headphones, well, ever, they're awful.

And USB-C on the iPhone instead of lightning would cause the same "problem" it does now for people that want a headphone jack. Personally I just leave the adapter connected to my headphones and don't really notice - or I use a proper DAC like the Audioquest Dragonfly.

The general public will go through the roof when/if Apple changes the charging connector on the iPhone again. They're still moaning about the last change.

No, you won't get that response from intelligent people who realize that USB-C is the future. You're right that you might get that response from idiots, though.
It's also very clear that Apple doesn't care about people complaining about needing dongles, as that's exactly what they've done with the new MacBook. So that really invalidates your argument. :)

USB C is the future of connectors on PCs. Its benefits are much more limited on a mobile device, where I am far less likely to benefit from thunderbolt 3, or need multiple ports, and Lightning is already reversible to begin with.

And it's not that Apple doesn't care. Tons of people complain about all sorts of things all the time. Some more valid than others. The trick is knowing which complaints to listen to and which to ignore. That the iPhone continues to sell well despite the lack of a headphone jack (which everyone was griping about for almost a year) shows that Apple knows well enough not to be distracted by senseless noise.

Dongles are only as much of an inconvenience as you want them to be, and for most part, I feel the impact of having to use dongles has been over-exaggerated and blown completely out of proportion.

Not being able to backup precious data (that isn't automatically backed up to iCloud daily) from your iPhone to the 2016 rMBP is quite frankly ludicrous.
God only knows what apple were thinking.

1. You can - just buy a single cable.
2. I've literally never done this in 9 years of owning iPhones.
3. If it's really that "precious" to you and for some reason it's not already backed up in iCloud (I can't begin to think what data this could be) then just setup wifi sync? Why on earth are you still connecting your phone to the computer in 2016...

I don't think it's too soon - it's exactly the right time.
I'm using wireless headphones since i have a smartphone that's capable to store enough music beside of all apps and data. This was over 5 years ago. I never liked cables, so i switched to bluetooth as early as i could.
Over these 5 years, the quality, range and battery time was increased by magnitudes. If you hear a pair of Bose QC35, Sennheiser Momentum or Beats Studio Wireless, you will not listen any difference to wired headphones at all. Not as long you will listen only MP3/AAC and you'll need excellent ears and a very silent environment to hear the difference to uncompressed, high bitrate audio.
The only remarkable difference is the price tag. A good pair of wireless headphones will cost you almost twice the price of wired headphones at the same quality level.

Now, we have low energy Bluetooth, we have high quality audio profiles for Bluetooth, we have great wireless headphones, we have the W1 chip to make pairing easier than before.

When will be the right time, if not now?
What are you waiting for?

I don't see how it's any easier than pairing with NFC. If you could pair with NFC that is.

Please link to the info you have that proves people want a headphone jack.

Samsung is going downhill since Steve Jobs died.
Finally a Steve J. dying post I can actually like!

This will always be the most ridiculous comment regarding the headphone jack. When bluetooth can match the same audio quality as the jack, then get back to me. Until then, just stop.
lightning port HP are equal to outdated headphone jack......
[doublepost=1481074900][/doublepost]
In the meantime we'll suffer with noticeably poor audio, more devices that need to be charged at least every other day and batteries that will degrade thus necessitating the replacement of those devices (whereas you only needed to replace wired headphones when they broke)......
Thanks a lot, Apple......

Really suffer? come on now a bit over the top don't you think.
[doublepost=1481074980][/doublepost]
Omitting the headphone jack is stupid since wired headphone tech is superior to wireless. Doesn't matter if it's Apple or another manufacturer.
Who's stopping you from using your wired headphones?

Huge when compared to not having food.... or living in a war torn area of the world.... that kind of huge? If your answer is no then no.... it's NOT a huge inconvenience.

You really gotta stop using the word "outdated" when describing the headphone jack. It sounds to me like you've never owned a quality set of cans, that you know nothing about audio quality in general, or both. Is it tech that's been around forever? Yes. Is it outdated? Not in the slightest.

It's not Courage everyone, it's Bravery. Bravery to follow :apple: blindly for...reasons
Isn't removing the headphone jack one of the most unpopular decisions made by Apple? Why do this? What do they hope to achieve?
