Not true in the slightest. USB-C headphones can be used on any USB-C equipped device, including the MacBooks. Lightning ONLY works on the phone.
USB-C is a valid replacement for the headphone jack because it's a universal port (just like the headphone jack!). Lightning is NOT a valid replacement because it's proprietary. Proprietary headphones are utterly useless.

But either way i'd be using an adapter because all the best headphones have neither connector and are using jacks, so it's irrelevant to me - and you're not going to see the likes of a Sennheiser IE80 with a USB-C or Lightning cable because they'd have to build a DAC into the cable and that would either be too cheap to make them sound decent or add a £70 cable that removes flexibility of which DAC/AMP combo you'd drive them with.

Hi
1. The apple cable is £19.00

Although not a lot against the cost of a 2016 rMBP.
£19.00 is not 'small change' or

thanks @Jamie0003

2. My iPhone wasn't backing up on iOS 9 (plenty of icloud space) this continued for a month before I realised. Other MR members reported the same issue https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/icloud-backup-not-working.1922868/

3. iCloud backups do not backup account passwords, Health, and HomeKit data. Only encrypted iTunes backup does this.

https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/create-an-archived-itunes-backup/amp/?client=safari

wifi sync wont backup 3. above

I try and do an iTunes encrypted archived backup once a week to 2015 rMBP via a cable for my iPhone and iPad mini.
Then backup to Time Capsule.
Then CCC TC to USB 3 drive and keep offsite.

"The best choice: use both together" (iCloud and iTunes)

I bought a MFI cable from Amazon for £6.

Account passwords are stored in keychain anyway - and I run 1Password for added security. Homekit syncs from my Apple TV - I just restored an iPhone yesterday and all the homekit data was there instantly.

Health I didn't know about, but as it's on my iPhone, 2 iPads and my Watch, i'd say it's more than backed up enough for me.

As I said, the only time I use the cable now and have done for at least the last 6 years is to backup and restore to my new device - which Apple has now borked with app restoration by making the phone download everything instead, which for me takes about 10 hours, when it used to take 10 minutes.

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
Whatever backup stratagy you are happy with.
Could you share the amazon link as £6.00 is an amazing price for MFI.
thanks

not sure, but don't we all remember when Jobs ridiculed Samsung's phablets and claimed nobody would buy them, only to copy their idea later? It certainly goes both ways.
Jobs ridiculed/rejected, Tim copied/"innovated", and not only this time

That bloody headphone jack .... and now as a bonus we include a fire extinguisher in case the battery catches fire again .. Convenient.

Meh, i can take or leave headphone jacks.. Would be interesting to see Apple be right on this.

Generally I have one pair of 'phones for each device/place I'd need them around the house, so leaving an adaptor on them would be no problem. Maybe the next iphone will somehow get wireless charging and you'll be able to charge and listen without other stuff.

That covers the relatively safe house, but how do you deal with more aggressive environments? I feel stuck to my cheap $2.99 headphones because I spend most of my time working in environments where the headphones are easily destroyed. Bluetooth is still too expensive to replace each week.

Give me 2 USB-C's samsung. Use the extra space you get by removing the headphone jack for another USB-C. That way I can charge and listen at the same time, or *gasp* listen with two headsets (with an extra head) at the same time!

I still don't know that many people that used headphones on their iphones. And those that do have had no issues with the lightning headphones. I think the next iphone should switch to usb-c so it will be easier to find device links and charge cables.

LOL. everyone complained about apple and said they were going to switch to Samsung over this. Then everything exploded. And now this. I guess Apple isn't doomed after all.

So me.

LOL!!! I guess I'm getting the iPhone 8 next year!

Apple kills the headphone jack and people are in uproar and go over to Samsung... I wonder where Samsung users will go when they do the same thing?

To one of the other Dozens of Android manufacturers who are all making high quality android phones.

unlike Apple, There are choices in the Android world. If you're someone tied to iOS and the iPhone, you have no real options but Abandon Apple, or live with it. Android has real competition amongst themselves. And if Samsung DOES go this route, I guarantee you there will be a couple of other Android manufacturers who will jump all over the mistake. OnePLus is really making a name for themselves, same with Huawei. There's always the good old HTC, Motorolla, etc.

In fact, I bet you that Samsung will have headphone ports in all their other devices too. So if they do drop it in the s8? people might be tempted to try one of the other devices in Samsung's line up just as well.

My Bluetooth headphones last longer than my cabled headphones, simply because the cable starts fraying at the plug end after a couple of months of regular tugging and yanking on it.

I cannot figure out why everyone is so attached to their headphone jack? What else do you listen to headphone with besides your phone.. I also use my iPad which the normal apple headphones it works fine for, Bluetooth in my car and I occasionally listen on my MBA, but I carry the adapter in my bag and it takes approximately 15 more seconds of my life.

Or why using lightning for your phone is so inconvenient?
I can't be the only person happy with the iPhone 7 right?

Headphones? I use them on my Phone, Computers (desktop and Laptop), at work on my computer. On my FM radio, on my ipod. My Nintendo DS, My Roku remote...

Why an iPod if you have an iPhone?

don't have an iphone, but not the point

There are some places I don't (didn't) wish to take my phone with me. Thats perfect place for the iPod. For example, Hockey locker room. The iPod nano fits perfectly in a little pocket that was in my goalie pants (behind extra padding) and I could even wear it out during some games to the ice and listen (pickup games could be really slow)

I had it wired to a tiny speaker that I put inside the foam padding in my helmet

Headphone jacks can be done away with. But majority of bluetooth headphones are crap. The ones that have good sound are expensive.

Maybe when bluetooth headphones gain better quality and price drops then removing headphone jack is acceptable.
[doublepost=1481109161][/doublepost]

I'm not too picky about sound quality. But a lot bluetooth headphones have noticeable sound quality. It sounds like you are listening to music through a toilet paper tube.

This is what apple doesn't get. The alternative to wired earphones are crap.
Honestly, given the removal of the jack and how terribad the Music app is, it's safe to say Apple truly doesn't care about music.

Rofl... I'm not even going to bother.

No, it's not better. That tiny little DAC in the Lightning plug is not better than the DAC inside the iPhone, and Bluetooth is just much worse than wired. Stop lying to yourself

Have you try it?

A thinner product is typically a lighter product as well. A thinner product is also a more useable product, because it's easier to fit in the hand and hold.

So I would argue that there are benefits. It's just either you care for it or not.
Having 1mm less thickness in my phone is not going to drastically change the way I hold it in my hand or put in my pocket.
