Samsung today announced that its new T7 Portable SSD is available for purchase, joining the T7 Touch in Samsung's 2020 portable SSD lineup.

Samsung first announced the new T7 Portable SSD in January at CES, but focused on releasing the more expensive T7 Touch with fingerprint sensor first. The T7 Portable SSD is similar to the T7 Touch, measuring in at the size of a business card.

The pocketable Samsung T7 SSD is made from a durable titanium metal case and is available in Metallic Red, Indigo Blue, and Titan Gray finishes. It is shock resistant and can withstand falls of up to two meters.

Samsung's T7 Portable SSD supports data transfer speeds of up to 1,050Mb/s. It's designed to work with all Macs and PCs, shipping with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C cable.

Samsung says the T7 Portable SSD can transfer a 10GB 4K UHD video in just over eight seconds, and 200 10MB pictures in just over two seconds. A three-year limited warranty is included, and optional password protection with AES 256-bit hardware encryption can be turned on.

The T7 Portable SSD can be purchased from the Samsung website starting today. A 500GB version is priced at $110, a 1TB version is priced at $200, and a 2TB version is priced at $370.

Impressive transfer rate for usb-c. I’ll be interested what the usb-a rate will be (as of this post, the new T7 is not shown on their site) as I’m still rocking a maxed 2015 MBP 15” which I will keep using until it is irreparable!

Should be a great drive. I've had the T7 Touch for a month now and it works great with both my MBP and 2017 iPad Pro. I was worried the fingerprint scanner would suck but it works really well.

Have been using two 500gb and a 1tb Samsung T3's for several years now. I boot my 2012 quad Mini from the 1tb drive every day, get about 400MB/sec which is all I can expect from USB 3 on a 2012 Mini. They are great, never any problems. One of the 500gb T3's is a bootable Mountain Lion clone for the times when I need my very expensive legacy software, the other is a bootable clone of my MacBook Air. These new T7's look like they will also be very nice.

Does anyone know what type of NAND cells uses this SSD? Is it QLC, or TLC?

Edit: Apparently it is TLC, although you can find the opposite on the web. Not sure but they are FAST.

I have two of the previous generation, one 500 GB and one 1 TB, they are impressive products, totally recommend it. They are fast even on the iPad Pro, external drives are particularly slow on iPad, but not these.

One great use for these is for people stuck with an SSD-less iMac; Apple was still selling these until recently! Plug one of these drives in and move your operating system install to the SSD, then boot from it. Your system will suddenly be ten times faster without having to disassemble it to replace the internal drive with an SSD.

Also, it's nice to see one of these high quality USB-C equipped drives that don't require a Thunderbolt port to work. More universal compatibility is a great thing.

It doesn't work with iPad Pro and you save $20.
Are you sure? Looking at the product pages for the T7 and T7 Touch, neither specify compatibility/incompatibility with any iOS devices. Also Samsung is currently offering $20 off the T7 Touch, making it only $380.

I don't believe that is correct, you can use it with the iPad Pro.

You can even use it without setting up the fingerprint reader. Only the fingerprint reader setup requires MacOS or Windows, after, you can use it with any device that supports external drives.

Yes it does. I use my T7 Touch with my 2017 iPad Pro all the time even with encryption enabled. The fingerprint reader works fine.

Granted, you do need to use the included software to initially set up your fingerprints and whatnot and that only works on MacOS/Windows. I think the "Touch" version is well worth the extra $20 or so.

I’d love to see at least a 4TB model. Otherwise I’ll just keep my older T5, which is still a fantastic drive in its own right.

I wanted a 4tb USB SSD a couple months ago for the 2014 Mini that I use as an iTunes server. If Samsung had one, that's what I would have bought. Since they didn't, I got an Oyen Digital 4tb USB SSD fro B&H Photo and it has been great. Performance is the same as my three Samsung T3's.

Meh... I get better speed from my JEYI ThunderBolt 3 M.2 NVMe enclosure that I got on AliExpress for $80 (Plus the low cost of NVMe SSD on Amazon.)
Fledging also sells a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure for M.2 NVMe drives for $115. It includes a fan, which is good for sustaining higher speeds. Even with a QLC drive I get write speeds around 2000 MB/s.
