What is wrong with it?

Mac display setting for retina resolution is indeed label as 2560x1440 for 5K monitor.
From Apple's tech specs for the Studio Display

Tilt and height adjustment that will fail at some point the future, for the same price as the Studio Display? And what is the knob at the bottom with the larger bezel? If you’re doing any kind of serious design work on this, that inept design decision would mess with your head.

This video shows off the Samsung Viewfinity S9 display quite well, there is an audio comparison of the built in speakers compared to a studio display at 5:27 (cons) time point. Studio display has better spatial audio. But what do you expect when most monitors are not comparable audio wise.

5120 x 2880 is the native resolution.
"Looks like 2560 x 1440" is what the control panel calls it.

So "offering an ideal pixel density for a 2560 x 1440 desktop at full Retina quality" is correct. It says "for" not "at".
That's the appearance of the desktop items, and not the display resolution as Shansoft stated here, which I was replying to. Two different things.

It has some advantages over the Studio Display, but not enough for me to justify it at essentially the same price as the base. I'm glad I didn't wait though and snapped up an ASD when Costco had it for $1249. Still might consider one if it drops below $1K for my other system.

Both are overpriced, I'll wait to replace my Thunderbolt Display.
LOL. until when? 2030? 2040? Its an ancient 2556 x 1440 display, and I wager the color accuracy is long long long past. Maybe its the USB2/FW800 ports? Im all for using older tech or hanging onto things for a long time... but any $300 4K display will be sharper and have better color. However, the build quality... no way to beat apple.

Some of the things that Apple charges for are just lame. Considering the various computer displays out there, most vendors include tilt and height adjustment stands as a standard feature. You even have Samsung's Matte coating to limit light reflection and glare on the monitor, instead of paying extra for Apple's Nano Texture. Then you have this display listing for $1599, who know how low it will go on sale?
On sale now, $1400 at amazon, was $1350 a week ago. And $1350 as refrub @Apple Store. Many ex-27" iMac uses have moved to the apple display -- which was also glossy and not adjustable.

Not defending the "no adjustment" thing, but how often do people move their monitors? I doubt if I have adjusted mine in.... years?

Hopefully it will be better built than the M8 as saw one in a Samsung store and was surprised how cheap it felt, though probably mad worse because the Apple Store was only a few shops down. I can see the appeal if you need multiple inputs or want to connect a PC but it is at the pricey end for a non-reference monitor (so is the Studio Display for that matter).

Change my mind, because I think this monitor will be a failure:

1) design inspired from studio display and isight camera.
2) external camera
3) asymmetric design bezel: was it so difficult to make a higher upper edge and insert the camera in?
4) worst speakers
5) plastic housing???
6) little difference in price compared to the studio display, to entice customers.

I prefer original apple products.

Most of us usually set it up once as far as tilt/hight. Still out of the box, you never know how well a display matches an all-in-computer right next to it, or a desktop placed on the floor or besides it. If you're a tall person or a short person sitting at a desk sometimes that warrants tweaking the tilt/hight more often (ergonomics). ;)

The panel's physical resolution is 5120x2880 so you are right about the tech spec. That is what makes is a 5K display.

What the article was showing was that most people run that at 2560x1440 addressable resolution. You get the fine detail of the 5120x2880 but things are sized as if they were 2560x1440. Running at native 5120x2880 would make everything so small as to be nearly unusable.

That refresh rate is pitiful. 60hz was unacceptable a few years ago... I donno wtf Samsung or anyone else is thinking still selling anything with 60hz.
Most Apple computer displays are still 60 Hz. All those previous iMacs were 60Hz. Aside from 2021 onward 14"/16" MBPs that use mini-LED backlighting, and the external Pro Display XDR display. What Mac displays aren't only 60 Hz?

I am purposely omitting HDR capable OLED based iPhones, and ProMotion IPad Pro's.

Yes we are all waiting for Apple to sell OLED computer displays.
