So, now just as with ADC, everyone that bought Mini Display hardware are screwed. Way to go Apple, build in obsolescence at our expense.

Thunderbolt supports MiniDisplay. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good Apple conspiracy rant! ;-)

I'm not going to really get hyped up about this one

AppleInsider confirms the early reports that iMacs are due to be refreshed this week.May 3rd is believed to be scheduled as a day for promotional materials at Apple stores to be changed out, likely marking the release of a new product.

Apple is widely expected to adopt Thunderbolt across their product line from here on out. They first introduced Thunderbolt on the MacBook Pros released in February. Thunderbolt promises a faster connector technology to drive external displays, hard drives and more.

I don't really feel it.... remember when the MBP's updated ? well remember when Apple changed their shipping time from 24 hrs to 1-5 days due to refresh ? well last time I checked on the iMac the shipping time is still 24 hrs...

Thunderbolt supports MiniDisplay.

I wonder what the impact is on the actual "display port" portion though. Is the thunderbolt equipped MDP compliant to the 1.2 spec ? What happens to the 21.6 Gbps of bandwidth since Thunderbolt is only rated for 10 Gbps ?

If I have a Thunderbolt device sitting between my display chain and my computer, can I still use up the 21.6 Gbps of display port bandwidth that the 1.2 spec provides ? Let's say I require 17 Gbps of bandwidth to push out the pixels to my display chain and I start transferring a file to my TB drive array at 6 Gbps, is my display going to start stuttering ? Is the file transfer going to be slower ?

Or as soon as I plug in the TB device, will my display output suddenly be limited to 10 Gbps ?

All questions I haven't seen addressed yet.

I stand corrected then. Thank you.

As for the conspiracy, I was left having to buy a $100 adapter for my ADC display, introduced and shortly thereafter abandoned by Apple.

Personally I am hoping that if Thunderbolt takes off, so far it doesn't even seemed to have warmed up the engines, this will be the end of the constant Apple port churn.

Apple generally has maintained or tried to maintain open standards in the last decade, with the huge exception of display ports. This is the one reason I have avoided them like the plague.

I'd love to using the Mac to feed media to my TVs but the number of different cables, and adaptors, along with the fiddling and overcharging has totally put me off.

DROOL.

I have a MBP and a Mac Pro. My next Mac might be an iMac, to replace the desktop Mac Pro, with it to be relegated as a server or media station.

2) To keep a thin body, a mobile GPU is being used... is there any limitation or any other factor that prohibits the inclusion of 2 GPUs? I've never heard/read anyone comment on this.
If they have a heat and space budget for two GPUs - even mobile ones - they have the heat and space budget for a single, much faster desktop GPU.

I've been anxiously wondering the same thing. :D Bring on the specs!

This is one thing that makes me question the release tomorrow. Although the mbp is more popular, you would think we would have some info. At least we get more info about the white vs. black iphone:rolleyes:

It's 2am here.. when should we possibly see updates if they happen in GMT+0 time?

Really do hope the option of a fully loaded iMac is well specced and not just the inclusion of TB and the processor. For the money Ill be spending Im expecting 8Gb RAM as standard and a rather meaty GPU. Roll on tuesday!

Who cares if 8GB is standard. Just pay the $210 and get 16GB from OWC.

too much discussion of Thunderbolt

I think there's too much angst regarding Thunderbolt, and whether the soon to be announced iMAC supports it. Seeing that the new MB Pros now do, the new iMacs likely will too. Almost no peripherals run on a Thunderbolt interface today, and many (like everything other than fast SSDs) don't come anywhere near running at transfer speeds that fast...but that's ok. What harm comes from having an additional capability? And, should devices in the future truly take advantage of Thunderbolt, then what one buys now with T'bolt will have further longevity. And if devices don't advance quickly over time, what's the harm in having it? As long as it doesn't cost more, who cares? I personally think USB3 will replace USB2 en masse, and will be the major standard in the future....then again, Intel chips of the near future will support both, providing options for all. In the end, the customer will dictate the choices.

I have a 2008 iMac...which still runs very well, by the way, and am looking forward to the new announcement with strong interest as an upgrade and passing along my 2008 iMac to one of the kids.

I hope that OWC stocks the new 2011 RAM soon. I bought the 2010 sticks before knowing about the refresh so I am going to have to return them.

Sandy Bridge processors support 1066, 1333, 1600, and other DDR3 RAM, so even if Apple bumps speed up to 1600, the memory will still likely work. However, they didn't move from 1333MHz with the MacBook Pro refresh so I don't know if they will with the iMacs.

Does this refresh mean that it's going to be redesigned, or is it going to still look the same?

It'll be 2 years with this same design, how often do they redesign the iMacs?

I believe the next refresh will be a new design. I'm pretty sure they redesign the mac's every 3-4 years or so. I'm still hoping that the new mac will come out tomorrow. I feel like it won't anymore.

Bubble iMac = 3.5 years including changes to monitor size, depth, CD loading method and specs
Luxo iMac = 2.5 years including changes to size and specs
White plastic iMac = 3 years including changes to screen size, depth, chips, specs, chin
Aluminium and glass iMac = 3.75 years and counting including changes to screen size, manufacturing method, specs, chin

A new design is possible, especially since the iPhone has supposedly grabbed the September release slot later this year that would normally be used for a new iMac.

Northern spring is the usual time for a re-specced iMac, however it didn't happen at this time last year...

I think this will not happen this week. Will happen before August like say days before WWDC.

I think August is too late, too many PC's already coming out with the Sandy Bridge and Apple need to keep up. They are already behind.

I really hope its today, my window of opportunity is disappearing. Its this week or maybe next or its never! I am not going to buy the old model and I can only buy one within the next week or I can never buy one!

anyone wondered about the monitor problem?

i'd luv to get one but i'm too scared about the dirt problem they had with the earlier version.... The gray spots/streaks behind the glass of monitor
