Curious that everyone is clamoring for a thunderbolt-enabled machine, but there isn't a single thunderbolt drive available on the market.

I guess some people just need to feel like they have new stuff even if it's totally pointless.

Sandy Bridge its way more faster, and having the thunderbolt available will be a matter of time for external HDD or cases. Either way the thunderbolt can be used for a LCD so I really don't see your point.

Similar, but not the same. The new design came out in October 2009.

New sizes, new aspect ratio, removal of plastic from the enclosure, removed the outer aluminum bezel, etc. And new guts, of course.

Yes you are correct. After a little digging is was a considerable upgrade. Even though the look stayed close. I almost wish mine would take a bomb so I would upgrade.

I bought probably the very last PPC iMac at the end of 2006 (or was the end of 2005?). It died on Wednesday. I can still get to the HHD via Target mode so I think I should be able to move everything over as soon as I get one of the new ones. COME ON TUESDAY! Any ideas when they may ship?

people need to catch up, why do people keep asking about crisis... it is old news in the graphical world....

the last 2 generations could play crisis and crisis 2 in bootcamp

Sorry, but you're totally wrong.

Play(load a level under medium settings), and PLAY are two different things;) There is NO MAC (much less the mGPU blessed iMac) that can max Crysis (@ native res) at livable frame rates(>30)...especially not at 2560x1440.
That said, I get the whole "talking about Crysis as THE end all graphics benchmark is cliche"...but it IS STILL A VERY relevant benchmark, even by today's standards. BTW: What do you think is current "news in the graphical world"? Metro 2033, Crysis(1, WH, 2), AVP...those are CURRENT BM heavy hitters

Crysis 2 is much more optimized than the original, that and it's setting facilitates easier processing and scalability(dense organic Jungle vs. city).

The iMac is great for most Blizzard and Valve titles... I use my mac for everyday *user experience oriented* computing (email, Garage Band, photos, iTunes...etc) and I love it....Gaming PC for all else.

Then I wouldn't plan on ever going back to an iMac.

Definitely no plan to. Apple (SJ) is far to enamored with glossy screens to give anyone options on the large displays/iMacs. I'm still surprised they actually brought the matte option back to MBP's.

It cracks me up reading posts that stress how something is dead and done for it or that something will never happen. Some posters seem to put so much effort trying to promote how BluRay (which they most likely don't personally use) is dead or that Thunderbolt (a brand new technology just barely getting off the ground) can't be any good because no one is using it.

Maybe doom and gloom is just empowering for some folks. It seems short sighted to me.

Based on my daughter's C2D iMac 21.5 I'm expecting the news ones to be pretty spectacular in spite of the shiny screen that kept me from wanting one.

not as cpu/gpu demanding

Compared to what?

Its MUCH more "cpu/gpu" demanding than say
ANY CoD (MW1, MW2, Black Ops)
ANY Valve (Source Engine) Title
ANY Blizzard Title
ANY Current MMO (Rift)
ANY Current RPG (ME2, Fallout 3/Vegas)

Take a look at the Crysis Benchmarks for these desktop cards...

IF Apple starts supporting more desktop cards for the Pro...then well see demanding games shine on a Mac.

PS: No intention to seem snarky at all (I just get passionate about gaming benchmarks). Stay well friend :)

Return Policy for an iMac bought last weekend??

Hey everyone!

I finally converted my parents from an 8 year old PC that I built for them to an iMac...last week. Hearing the news that the new Sandy Bridge processors are due on Tuesday, what recourse do we have? Can we return the 21.5" for the new one? What sort of restocking fees, etc. would we incur?

Thanks!

As long as it hasn't been over 14 days, you can return it.

1. Play doesn't mean it needs to be on max settings and max resolution, so I am correct the last 2 generation can run crisis and crisis 2 at minimum settings
at about a 1080p resolution, and minimum settings for crisis is still pretty amazing.

2. When you say "There is No Mac that can max crysis" .... are you excluding the 5870 mac pro?!

3. You are very similar to me.... however instead oh having a Mac and a Gaming PC rig, I have a gaming PC that is hackintoshed.

1. Yes, the bolded part I agree with,

2. on apple supporting desktop card in the Mac Pro.... they support all of the 5xxx card, all of the 6xxx cards, and most of the fermi cards. You can't buy a Mac Pro with these cards pre installed but the drivers are in Mac OS

According to certain sources it says Apple retail store are staying through the night to change out advertisements and such.

I don't understand why they would make a big deal about this unless they were releasing a major update such as a product re-design or big change. When has a spec update caused retail stores to have people work through the night?

Is this routine with any spec update @ retail stores?

USB 3 is coming next year. The only reason Apple has yet to implement it is because Intel hasn't. But that will change in Ivy Bridge.

Agreed. USB is on its last legs, for sure, but it will be around a little while longer before it fades away.

When Intel supports it, Apple will, because it will cost essentially nothing for them to do so, and is backward compatible with previous USB devices.

But, I don't think we'll be seeing a USB 4.

Two words: Future-proofing.

Macs are expensive, and many Mac users cannot afford or do not want to buy new Macs frequently. Such Mac users want to buy a Mac and have it work with the latest software and peripherals for as many years as possible. For such users, it makes total sense to want a Mac with Thunderbolt, even though there are isn't a single Thunderbolt peripheral on the market.

When the hell are they gonna re-implement spaces !!@$%#^&(&)(#

I need to be able to assign it to any corner I want !!!

What the Hell is wrong with them !!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Call me clumsy or whatever, but I hate the 'corners': I accidentally trigger them all the time on a frien's machine. Mostly because I use the Apple menu a lot. I DO miss the old mouse's side buttons/center button!

Isn't this and your quoted post by JMP the same - MacOS X related troll in an iMac update thread?

Let's agree to disagree about min settings being viable play;)

On your 5870 mention (which was a good card)...it's not going to allow max settings on that fancy cinema display (which I consider to be the staple of many pro owners...at least the ones I know personally). To me, a game should be played at native res, settings aside.

Not to distract from the original issue...Crysis is still a very relevant and great benchmark for current system test. BUT, last time I checked...this isn't a dictatorship:) stay well, glad to hear theres some hackintosh gamers out there in MR

Lucky for you and your parents, Apple did away with the restocking fees just a few months ago. As long as you return it within the first 14 days, you shouldn't have any problems or pay any fees.

What sense would it make for Apple to update the iMac twice in such a rapid succession? If anything, Apple's hardware cycles are getting even longer, mostly around 10-12 months in recent years. And at least from Intel, there will be nothing new to put into these machines by that date.

It's not unusual for Apple to update the iMac twice in a year. They did it in 2009, 2006, 2005 and three times in 2003. Hardware is always changing, and iMacs get speed bumps or redesigns to reflect those.

Lion is going to be released about a month after the new iMac, so if the redesign somehow really coincides with the release, it will probably happen right now.

That would make Lion being released first or second week in June. That's possible of course, but highly unlikely. My guess is sometime in August, or early September.
