I'm very interested in this. I've tried a couple other "backlit" Mac desktop keyboards, but they've been crap quality and quickly failed (with the last one it was the space bar... hard to type pretty much anything without spaces!).

Hopefully this brand is better.

I really don't get why Apple doesn't make one of these, though.

The KB diagram you linked shows the standard SHIFT and SHIFT LOCK keys of a qwerty KB>
I think it's the < and > arrow keys you're after, those are not shift keys in normal typing.
The Swedish one I direct linked to (with a fragment identifier in the URL) would be the after picture, with this being the before (regular qwerty, without the shift key split etc): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#/media/File:KB_United_States.svg. So I never called the chevrons shift keys.

OK, I got excited and ordered the Aluminum Desktop Stand. I hope I won't regret it later.
I want the X3 Wireless too, but I'm not sure if it will work with my iMac Late 2013 and iMac Mid 2011 (Which I may do without). There's no information on what version of Bluetooth this keyboard support.

Also, I couldn't find any reviews, just generic press releases. It would have been nice if someone at MR could have review it and provide us his/her honest opinion.
I don't think that most people would have to worry about what version of bluetooth a brand new keyboard supports; like right now I'm using first gen (so about 10 year old) magic keyboard/trackpad with my MBP16, and that works just fine.

A bit of context before anyone asks: It's been an experiment. I've always preferred to use the keyboards on my laptops, and I just brought out my old keyboard and trackpad to see if things would end up a bit more ergonomically correct.

Dammit, YES!

Why has it taken Apple so long to put out a damn standalone backlit keyboard?? And the price is right... I hope it feels as good as it looks (and USB-C to boot!)

Now regarding the iPad Stand, I would prefer a magnetic version. Someone needs to make it! Still, very nice, and fairly priced.

This might become my main setup once the new iPads are released.

Making it magnetic you pretty much take away the possibility of using the touch capabilities of the iPad; you can't really have a 12.9" display being poked at the edges (like when typing) with it only hanging on by a small-ish magnet in the middle of its back. And you can't make quick adjustments to use it differently if you every time first must remove the iPad, adjust the stand, put the iPad back, and then maybe redo it 2-3 more times to get it just right.

Just ordered one. I remembered that my Samsung T5 portable SSDs came with both a USB C to USB C cable and a USB C to USB A cable. The T1 keyboard only ships with a USB C to USB C charging cable. Great bargain for $56!

Now I have two full size wired Apple keyboards (old style with the USB 2 ports) and an Apple rechargeable keyboard that came with my iMac. And soon the Satechi.

I guess I can always sell the full size wired keyboards.

I don’t understand this comment. A magnet on its back, even in a similar form factor to the one in the article, would make it far more stable than just sitting in a trough as it appears to be now.
Pull it off to remove the iPad would be a simple task, as demonstrated by the Apple magic keyboard method.
And what ‘quick adjustments’ are you referring to that would be made more complicated because of a magnet?
I agree with the op. I have been searching for a similar style magnetic stand for ages but one doesn’t seem to exist.

A quick search and I've found several solutions for holding an iPad magnetically; but to make them sturdy enough they all either cover the whole back (like Apple's Magic Keyboard), or they come with a case (so essentially also covering the whole back; but now with something that makes a stronger attachment to the separate stand). The iPads simply haven't been designed to be used while held upright by a magnetic puck in the middle of their backs.

From an engineering standpoint I simply don't see a small(-ish) generic stand like that (designed for all devices from 4" to 13") being able to magnetically grab on to an iPad strong enough to not risk falling off when you use it as a touch device; or when you adjust the angle (like when switching from a video call to drawing with the pencil, or touch-typing).

Maybe you would prefer a Magic Stand (ie Magic Keyboard without the keyboard); but that wouldn't really be "a magnetic version" of this stand, like @Darth Tulhu requested.

Can anyone answer if these can be used or are meant to be use also with iMacs or only iPads?

also, how would these compare to the Bluetooth black magic keyboards apple makes?

I’d jump on this if I wasn’t afraid of BT issues reported with the M1 MacMini. I’m using a Logitech MX Master Keyboard and dongle/receiver. But I’d like a smaller keyboard that would fit better on my under the desk keyboard/mouse shelf. I guess I’ll wait and see how well it works with the M1 MacMini as others report in.
Yeah, I've read about the Bluetooth M1 issues too. I haven't bought one yet - kinda waiting to see if there's a 14-inch in a couple of months. But while my 2013 27" iMac is getting a bit slow now, it doesn't have any Bluetooth problems at all. So it'd be a bummer to buy a problem.

On the Satechi product page, under "Tech Specs", it clearly states whether or not iMacs are officially supported.

MacRumors has conveniently placed a link to that page in the text about the product.

so it can or it can’t????

also, don’t think a link says how it compares subjectively to the iMac magic keyboard Bluetooth black one

The problem is whether it will be backwards compatible. Even if it works, it may drain the battery of the peripheral much faster if it doesn't support the newer BT low-power features.

Wow, am I crazy or do these prices seem pretty reasonable? I have a cheap BT keyboard right now that I use with my iPad Pro but this is much nicer looking and backlit. The stand would be great, I use the cover/cases triangle stand but it is not ideal.

I have the Satechi aluminum bluetooth keyboard, and I love it. To me and my fingers, the typing experience is vastly superior to the Apple Magic Keyboard. I especially like the concave to the keys. I really wish they made a bluetooth trackpad as well; the M1 mouse is just too small for my hand.

These look very similar but just without the Satechi logo...at 1/4 of the price.
Thanks for link. I think I will grab that Aliexpress stand to give it a go. Unlike other commenter, I don't mind trying out the Chinese stuff and usually never bother returning stuff that is so cheap to begin with, even if it is a dud. Law of averages so far has worked in my favour. And heh, you get it like 6 months later, which I love 'cause you've forgotten you ordered it and it's like suddenly getting a gift in the mail! ;-)

Warning to Canadians ordering from the states.... I got burned for 30 dollar import fee well after I had ordered and it had shipped, on top of the 70 I paid for the smaller keyboard. It's still not on Amazon.ca but might be when you see this note.

Does this have a motion sensing backlight? I don't want to have to click a key for it to light.

Yes, they can be used with an iMac. However, the keyboard comes with a USB C to USB C cable for recharging. If your iMac does not have a USB C port (same as Thunderbolt 3) then you will need a USB C to USB A cable. Those can be found anywhere and are not expensive.

I have no idea how they compare to the Apple keyboard. I own an Apple magic keyboard and will find out when my Satechi board arrives and I use it.

Well, I just ordered the X3 Bluetooth. I hope I won't regret it.
I recently found an original brand-new Apple Bluetooth full-size keyboard (white one). I would like to use it, but I'm now used to the low profile keyboards. I may end up selling it.
