I couldn't believe how sub-par the display is. I love the size and weight but that is a total oversight to not put a retina on it. Very poor display by a company that touts Retina everything.

It's not sub-par, your grammar is!
The iPad Mini is great! The screen is good,,,it's actually great! No, not retina, but use it six or seven inches away as normal and you can barely notice....and yes, I do have fantastic eyesight! If you don't like it, buy a full size one, but the last laugh will be on you!

Retina ads no thickness, only cost. Battery life differences are negligible. Price is irrelevant, as Apple knows buyers will pay whatever Apple charges.

The iPad 3 had the same battery life as the iPad 2, but was it the same thickness and weight?

I'm sick of hearing "they could have just put a Retina in", "oversight" blah blah.

What don't you people understand? The only display technology that would work in that form factor and power requirements AND be retina is IGZO, simply put the manufacturing supply of those displays are fully bound up .

Every one of the factories that makes those displays (let alone that screen size) is running at full capacity and orders are booked solid for months. There simply isn't enough production capability to get even close to the yield that Apple needs, just look at all the issues the rMBPs, these factories are straining under there current loads, add 4 million+ fully functional and non defective in a custom form factor no less, it just isn't going to be possible until next year.

Me too! These dumb ass threads do nothing to help people wanting to make a decision on buying the Mini. The thread starter needs muted!

It looks good in a store for a reason - everything looks better in store.

This cannot be said enough. A store is a terrible place to judge any display. The Mini looks okay in the store, ugly at home.

Everyone is freaking out about how it's not retina and it burns their eyes. Jesus, it's not like its black and white.

My eyes actually did "burn" while using a Mini (eye strain). Never had that experience on other low rez screens.

How does this even make sense? Are you saying the retail environment lends a halo effect, or that the lighting at apple stores makes the screens appear better than they are? There is something about these mini threads that is very hard to understand.

It's a known fact that interior lighting in clothing departments is as flattering as possible to enhance your skin tones and other things. This is why your outfit will look a bit different under the florescent lighting of most offices and inertior spaces. The quality of the Apple Store's light is probably as flattering as possible as well.

It is difficult to understand if have no experience comparing displays. Environment makes a huge difference. It's why so many people return products with displays after seeing them in the home.

When I bought my first retina ipad, I was wondering what all the fuss was about, it didn't matter to me.

Yeah but I dont't hold my TV 12in away from my face either. Maybe you do, but most humans do not.

Excellent point. I'm not bashing the device. Like I said the size is perfect, much better than a full sized iPad IMO but when every new portable device Apple puts on the market now being Retina (macbooks, ipod, iphone, etc) why not do that for the mini? To me this seems to be a way for them to get everyone to rebuy the Mini when the retina is released in the next gen.

I completely agree with you about Apple sand bagging for profit which is why I am holding off on the mini for myself until retina comes out. Unfortunately, Apple still managed to squeeze two mini's out of me because the kids want them for Christmas. No escaping Apple's bean counters. :D

When I went to buy my iPad 3 a while ago, the Apple store I went to had the iPad table in the front of the store where the morning sun was streaming through that big glass storefront all over them. You could hardly see the displays that were turned up to maximum brightness, and the devices were hot as could be. I'm surprised they would sell any with that presentation, yet they did manage to sell a few.;)

Why not give it a shot? :p

Find me a display foundry capable of handling that workload and doing it with the only tech suitable, IGZO.

You simply can't right now. The worlds production capability for IGZO is completely tapped out well into next year. The factories that are making those displays are having a hell of a time making them quick enough without defects (its a brand new technology that has kinks to work out in production) just for the current retina devices. THAT is why you can't get a retina mini yet.

The capability simply doesn't exist until Sharp and others finish the plants that they have been building for years to ramp up this type of production.

We've gotten to a point where the bottlenecks of manufacturing are keeping new technology from hitting the market at the ever faster pace we've been on.

There's nothing to be mad about here, this is industry. You can't just take a few months and a ton of money and suddenly have a plant ready to go. It takes years of planning.

I don't think that's necessarily true in the same way that the last MacBook Pro update and the current MacBook Air update were just a way to get people to rebuy them when they came out with Retina versions.

I hold it about a book's length from my face... and it looks fine... the PPI is also better than my computer monitor... and that is is like 20 inches from my face... you people are just spec crazy and look for excuses.

I hope Apple NEVER puts a retina display in the Mini to spike the lot of you. :)

I've said this about 15 times in the last week... it always gets ignored by the tweedle dumbs on this site.

First of all, I hope Apple doesn't spike people because that would just hurt. Second, people ignore you because you are rude and make comments like one you just did above. What is so wrong as a consumer to demand the best from a company we support? We are paying premium dollars so we seek premium technology. Third, while it is acceptable to you, it doesn't mean it is acceptable to everyone else. The fact that people have to look for a third party web browser to properly use the mini is proof that there is a design flaw here; one that people realize could be solved by a retina. Again, if it works for you then by all means. What I find amusing are people like you who get so worked up that people are complaining about a missing component. You do this because it hurts your feeling to know that you paid a good amount of money for a sub-par (visually) product. Go on and defend your purchase. Us "tweedle dumbs" will put our money aside for now until Apple releases a better product.

By the way, if Apple does release a retina iPad mini, and they will eventually, I expect that you won't ever make that purchase....EVER.

Great, so you agree with your own opinion. What's the point of your post ?

Very pro and very mature. I take none of this personally but you however. At any rate, not going to argue with some immature kid. Moving on...

You're just taking this too serious, ya doof. I'm also not some kid... in my mid 30's actually. I just have the sense to not be one who sits here stern faced arguing about what essentially are toys. Expensive grown up toys but they are really just toys.

They still sell MBP without Retina's. So what's your point?

And there really not that expensive, and certainly not that grown up. See you over in AudiRumors

Whenever I read post in any forum that slams a very successful product, it make me smile. Can't you just not start another tread? Are you that special? I'm sure you are. Better to post, it is a good product enjoyed by many but not for me.
But where is the fun in that:eek:

If this was a competitor's tablet, I wonder how many would be as forgiving about the lack of retina screen...

This is the problem I see

I personally bought an ipad mini and had it for 2 days before I returned it. Now I have an ipad 4. I previously owned an ipad 3 and ipad 1 and sold both so I had experience with ipad.

First, like most people, I LOVED the form factor. The hardware design was pretty damn slick. I loved holding it in my hand. It didn't get warm once while using it; I just comfortable using it all the way around. I had questions about the processor; however using it I really didn't notice much lag if at all when using apps, browsing the web, etc. I could totally see having one of these aside from a regular ipad in the future. For now, I had to decide on the mini OR the ipad 4.

The one main issue, which made me return it, was the non-retina display. Now let me be clear from my own perspective folks. Was the screen totally unusable? No. Did my eyes start to melt at the horror of having non-retina in my hands? Of course not. Remember the time BEFORE ipad 3 came out? Yeah, people were using non-retina ipads all the time and had NO issue whatsoever with the display quality. I never heard any issues then. It was truly a great device and everyone loved it. For those now that complain that they get headaches, what the hell did you do before ipad 3 came out? I don't mean to diminish your pain or tell you you are crazy but these complaints seemed pretty absurd to me.

My isssue was this, I was so used to using a retina display ipad. Reading on retina has always been a joy, just looking at the beautiful web pages, the vibrant colors, watching full HD video; I was happy that Apple had taken the next step up from ipad 2 to give us double the resolution like we were all hoping for. While using a mini is perfectly doable, you just don't get the same experience in terms of display quality and at this point, I would still rather pay $170 more and get a retina display ipad. Apple has shown us time and again that they want to raise the bar. With ipad 3 we got our first taste of retina, now they are starting to put it in macbook pros, etc. It has become apparent that one of their big selling points for their products will be having retina displays. This makes PERFECT sense. MOST of us are used to HD and it has become the standard and it's what we expect. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with having that expectation. We are at the end of 2012 now; would you go into a store and buy a TV that was only standard def with high definition being what it is now? Of course not.

This is what bugs me, that Apple is all of a sudden taking a step back with the mini by offering the resolution that is going back to the ipad 2 and 1. Honestly, if Apple couldn't do the HD retina now with pricing issues, form factor constraints, battery size, etc they should have waited until next year to release it because we all know that sooner or later the 2nd gen mini will get a retina display. They obviously released the 1st gen now because they know people will still buy it and they want to make money, they are a business and I understand that. But just imagine if they had a retina screen on this? Take how well the mini is selling now and multiply that by A LOT.

In the end, if you don't find lack of retina an issue for you personally, then I'm glad the mini suits you well and I hope you continue to get great use out of it. I'm just at a point where getting anything less than retina now, in any of the Apple products, is not an option and I'm just a person who is willing to pay extra for that better quality. It's the standard for me. Not everyone is me, however, and like I said, there are those who have different needs, who may not have the extra $170 etc. This is just my reasoning for not wanting a non-retina mini ipad and I think its very valid.

If this was a competitor's tablet, I wonder how many would be as forgiving about the lack of retina screen...

Honest question: is there a competing tablet that weighs the same (or less!) than the iPad mini, has the same (or better!) battery life, is a similar thickness, has a similar screen size (almost 8 inches diagonal) within a similar sized body, AND has a retina/HD quality screen?

I really like the size and weight of the mini, but I'd abandon Apple in a heartbeat if I could have the same thing PLUS a retina/HD screen.
