It's nice to have the form factor of the mini, but for me the non-retina and 512mb ram were definitely reasons that made me shy away. Not like my iPad 3 is heavy to begin with.
Honest question: is there a competing tablet that weighs the same (or less!) than the iPad mini, has the same (or better!) battery life, is a similar thickness, has a similar screen size (almost 8 inches diagonal) within a similar sized body, AND has a retina/HD quality screen?
I really like the size and weight of the mini, but I'd abandon Apple in a heartbeat if I could have the same thing PLUS a retina/HD screen.
Haha I swear. If only a few years ago we could see ourselves complaining about something like this.
Not that I know of.
Maybe iPad Mini 2.
And there really not that expensive, and certainly not that grown up. See you over in AudiRumors
We won't care most likely. Do you?If this was a competitor's tablet, I wonder how many would be as forgiving about the lack of retina screen...
Reading this hurt my eyes. its a forum, think short and conciseI personally bought an ipad mini and had it for 2 days before I returned it. Now I have an ipad 4. I previously owned an ipad 3 and ipad 1 and sold both so I had experience with ipad.
First, like most people, I LOVED the form factor. The hardware design was pretty damn slick. I loved holding it in my hand. It didn't get warm once while using it; I just comfortable using it all the way around. I had questions about the processor; however using it I really didn't notice much lag if at all when using apps, browsing the web, etc. I could totally see having one of these aside from a regular ipad in the future. For now, I had to decide on the mini OR the ipad 4.
The one main issue, which made me return it, was the non-retina display. Now let me be clear from my own perspective folks. Was the screen totally unusable? No. Did my eyes start to melt at the horror of having non-retina in my hands? Of course not. Remember the time BEFORE ipad 3 came out? Yeah, people were using non-retina ipads all the time and had NO issue whatsoever with the display quality. I never heard any issues then. It was truly a great device and everyone loved it. For those now that complain that they get headaches, what the hell did you do before ipad 3 came out? I don't mean to diminish your pain or tell you you are crazy but these complaints seemed pretty absurd to me.
My isssue was this, I was so used to using a retina display ipad. Reading on retina has always been a joy, just looking at the beautiful web pages, the vibrant colors, watching full HD video; I was happy that Apple had taken the next step up from ipad 2 to give us double the resolution like we were all hoping for. While using a mini is perfectly doable, you just don't get the same experience in terms of display quality and at this point, I would still rather pay $170 more and get a retina display ipad. Apple has shown us time and again that they want to raise the bar. With ipad 3 we got our first taste of retina, now they are starting to put it in macbook pros, etc. It has become apparent that one of their big selling points for their products will be having retina displays. This makes PERFECT sense. MOST of us are used to HD and it has become the standard and it's what we expect. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with having that expectation. We are at the end of 2012 now; would you go into a store and buy a TV that was only standard def with high definition being what it is now? Of course not.
This is what bugs me, that Apple is all of a sudden taking a step back with the mini by offering the resolution that is going back to the ipad 2 and 1. Honestly, if Apple couldn't do the HD retina now with pricing issues, form factor constraints, battery size, etc they should have waited until next year to release it because we all know that sooner or later the 2nd gen mini will get a retina display. They obviously released the 1st gen now because they know people will still buy it and they want to make money, they are a business and I understand that. But just imagine if they had a retina screen on this? Take how well the mini is selling now and multiply that by A LOT.
In the end, if you don't find lack of retina an issue for you personally, then I'm glad the mini suits you well and I hope you continue to get great use out of it. I'm just at a point where getting anything less than retina now, in any of the Apple products, is not an option and I'm just a person who is willing to pay extra for that better quality. It's the standard for me. Not everyone is me, however, and like I said, there are those who have different needs, who may not have the extra $170 etc. This is just my reasoning for not wanting a non-retina mini ipad and I think its very valid.
Be ready for NEXUS fan. I would add IOS, I had a Nexus 7 2 software updates from being an iPad replacement. Spec are good though.Honest question: is there a competing tablet that weighs the same (or less!) than the iPad mini, has the same (or better!) battery life, is a similar thickness, has a similar screen size (almost 8 inches diagonal) within a similar sized body, AND has a retina/HD quality screen?

Non-retina is fine... the PPI on your TV is MUCH worse.
The mini is a total fail. Unbelievable. Epic sadness - no retina.
Wouldn't it be nifty if there was a place for people who are interested in the iPad product line, to share their experiences and expertise, without ridicule and childish proclamations?
You fundamentally don't understand the relationship between PPI and normal viewing distances and yet you get a couple of up votes anyway.
Welcome to MacRumors, where anything positive said about Apple gets a couple of upvotes, no matter how wrong it is.
If Steve Job still alive He wouldn't allow non-retina iPad mini released this month. Don't blame Tim Cook he has no vision but he still learning....![]()
And you can speak for Steve because.....why?

It's a known fact that interior lighting in clothing departments is as flattering as possible to enhance your skin tones and other things. This is why your outfit will look a bit different under the florescent lighting of most offices and inertior spaces. The quality of the Apple Store's light is probably as flattering as possible as well.
The ipad--and mini--are light emitting. The idea that ambient room light--out side of glare--would affect your impression of the screeen seems a reach. Its concievable a screen might seem more bright and vivid in low light--but apple stores are generally brightly light. If anything I would expect the ipad to look better in home light.
So many people complaining, it helps to realize that it's really a minority opinion.
Haha I swear. If only a few years ago we could see ourselves complaining about something like this. A decade ago this is something we'd be lusting after. This would be the science fiction device we've all hoped for. Like freaking Star Trek or something! I remember having a webtv and how amazed I was at that. I never would've dreamed we'd have what we have today or that I'd be typing this on an iPad.
I can understand. Really. After awhile, we become accustomed to certain things, but just remembering how bad we've wanted this type of thing for so long, you all complaining about the lack of a retina display like "ewwww it burns my eyes" sound a little spoiled
