One of the girl geniuses was leaving for the day and as she left, she opened up her purse so this manager-looking guy could look in the bag. Only when he gave the okay she was allowed to close her purse and leave. Seems like they're taking every precaution to prevent thievery, even by checking up on their own employees.

And by making this thread, I fully expect all the "cool" people to post their responses showing how unimpressed they are.

It's quite common for that to happen, I work in an electronics store and we get searched before leaving our shift. If they didn't, stuff would go missing.

Are people really this dishonest? I think this lends credence to the theory that humans are inherently evil.

The "cool" people , as you call them, are smarter than you. This is common practice in retail.

My mother is an accountant and once told me that accounting audits weren't really meant to catch criminals...

...so much as they are meant to keep otherwise normal folks from being tempted to do something criminal.

maybe she was just showing her manager something. did any other people get searched before going home?

Seriously though, what are they checking her for, nanos? How much stuff could she have put in her purse?

I've worked at both Bluenotes and West 49, both companies always do bag checks, and sometimes coat pat-downs. It only seems natural that this would occur in an electronics store.

They do this at fedex shipping warehouses. I went to pick up a package once, and I had to go to a security booth and wait for them to retrieve it. Some guys were getting off work and leaving. They have to exit to the parking lot through the security guard booth and have to be searched before leaving.

you'll probably be shocked to know that company's lose more money from internal theft than from shoplifters -- in north america at least.

This is common practice in retail. Several places I have worked at did this. Super annoying when you're in a hurry and have to wait for someone to walk you out, but I understand the reasoning behind it. Not everyone out there is an honest person and with the economy the way it is people get desperate.

'specially at the Apple Store. Referring to what happened in San Diego the other day.

I'm 40, 24 years ago when I worked at JC Penneyin high school the women who worked on the retail floor were not allowed to have a purse, just a small clear plastic bag they could keep makeup and other odds and ends in. Their regular purses had to be locked in lockers ( though most did not bother and left them in their car) before they headed out on their shift and they got checked coming and going. So this is definitely nothing new.
