Saw something at the Apple Store today that shocked me.

I thought you were going to say a knowledgeable employee. :p jk.. :apple:

One of the girl geniuses was leaving for the day and as she left, she opened up her purse so this manager-looking guy could look in the bag. Only when he gave the okay she was allowed to close her purse and leave. Seems like they're taking every precaution to prevent thievery, even by checking up on their own employees.

And by making this thread, I fully expect all the "cool" people to post their responses showing how unimpressed they are.
They do that at 90% of retail stores.

Id laugh if she opened her bag and she WAS stealing something.

Excellent counter thief technique. They probably catch people all of the time.

It's not just retail places that do this. I work at a Hyatt Resort and we have had bag checks at security after finishing a shift for years. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Yeah, you can see this at any mall in America if you catch a store at the right moment. Like I said, I would say 9/10 stores do this in malls. It's wierd though, I haven't heard of too many large department stores that use this practice. You figure it would be easier to steal from them...

They saw it in your eyes and on your nose?:)

ON a serious note, I'd always search someone who makes $6/hour and selling $600 iphones

I work around narcotics and have never gotten searched after finishing my shift.

I think this lends credence to the theory that humans are inherently evil.
Anyone who has reared children knows that we are.

My mother is an accountant and once told me that accounting audits weren't really meant to catch criminals...

...so much as they are meant to keep otherwise normal folks from being tempted to do something criminal.
My grandfather used to say, "I lock the doors to keep an honest man honest."

you'll probably be shocked to know that company's lose more money from internal theft than from shoplifters -- in north america at least.
That's definitely not true in retail.

That's because they usually have security watching you.

it really depends on the type of retail... I've worked in a lot of different types of stores. Not something I'm proud of really haha.

But in say, a grocery store, the internal theft is relatively low.

An electronics store or a Game Stop, it's gonna be a lot higher.

An Apple store/best buy/any high end gadget place I bet has random bag checks to cut down on the internal theft. I would imagine Apple has a very small amount of internal theft but I'm just guessing.

No way, so people out there steal stuff from their work?:D
Gotta keep security tight in places like that, you gotta search, follow the rules and keep everything strict to company code.
Imagine all the ipod nanos or iphones one could stuff in a purse or bag and make thousands....

Seriously though, what are they checking her for, nanos? How much stuff could she have put in her purse?

You hang around odd women. My wife could fit a mac pro in her purse and have enough room to not be able to find it later when looking for it....

I'm not surprised that Apple stores do this. I've only worked at one retail store, a Yankee Candle, and we didn't have bag checks, but about the most expensive ing there was a big heavy $20 candle. And we had a small, open stockroom with nothing to hide behind. At an Apple store, with small, light things that cost hundreds of dollars and a big, crowded stockroom...I'm not surprised they need to check bags.

yep, we did this at Nike retail too. Every bag or purse has to be opened and looked into under the front door camera.

The Chinese slaves at Foxconn that Apple uses to make the iPhone only make $0.60 an hour. I bet they get the bent over latex glove treatment every shift.

Why is this shocking? It's fairly common practice.

It's quite common for that to happen

This is common practice in retail.

lol thats a common practise in allot of retail places.

Most retail stores have a walk out procedure... lol

This is indeed normal.

not surprised at all.... i have seen this before too...

This is common practice in retail.

Not really shocking, a lot of retail stores do this.

Even though I said that last sentence in my original post to prevent what somehow still inevitably happened, people still said it. People will always post what they think will make them APPEAR smart.

I get it. I know that it's commonplace. I never said it wasn't. I was shocked that Apple does it. I've already come to expect very little from MacRumors.

Why wouldn't Apple do it? They have more to lose as their items are small, but worth a lot. Sneaking out an iPhone or a time capsule in your purse or backpack is a whole lot different than a handful of lipstick or a DVD or two.

I wouldn't work in a place that did this. Sorry, but until i give you reason to ask to search me, you're not going to.
