I'm not buying a MBP until all the improvements from the Air and the MacBook are included: multi-touch trackpad, the new keyboard, magnetic latch (okay, the latch isn't a deal breaker :p), etc. My 2 year old Mac Mini is doing alright at the moment. In fact, it's the best Mac I've ever had!

Thanks for expressing how I feel as well.

I am DONE with these "I'm Waiting Threads."

They are pointless.

I couldn't agree more. I feel sorry for people that can't make a decision. If you need a computer, buy one. The current MBP's are great machines. So what they don't have the latest and greatest chip, the way Apple updates their products, we're all obsolete every 6 months anyways. Live for TODAY!

look 2500$ is nothing to scoff at and while penryn might just offer a 5-10% difference in speed it still equals the difference between the 2.2 and 2.4 MBP models. That plus the potential for a cooler running processor that will result in less hyperactive fan activity makes it more than worth being disappointed in having shelled out that much money for something that could have been that much better.

And when all signs point at a upgrade at a unspecified near future then I just cannot get myself to take the leap. Not when I know how much i'll be kicking myself if a silent update takes place 2-3 weeks later

I don't understand why a handful of people keep demanding that everyone drop all context and buy recklessly and without consideration, and characterize every reasonable and rational reason to delay a purchase in the most extreme possible manner.

You don't see the pro-wait people trolling incessantly, being absurdly extremist, or posting blatant provocation such as the anti-wait crowd have been doing daily now for a week. (Couching a flame in a "joke" does not make it any less of an attack.)

I'm in the 'waiting' category. I don't need a laptop right now, but really do want one. I've got the iMac at home as my main computer, but with two of us in the household, it would be nice to have another option.

I was about to lay down the money for a higher end MacBook yesterday, when I realized for just a few hundred more I could get the low-end MBP (which saves me from the black v. white choice, and provides a bigger screen). However, that few hundred more has convinced me to just wait it out (hopefully no more) than a few weeks to get the most up to date.

If it was a semi-necessity, I would certainly buy now, as it seems the update won't be anything drastic (I'm guessing, just like everyone else on these boards), but if you can hold off and have other computing options, it wouldn't hurt to keep that money in the bank a bit longer.

AMEN lol... I hate the way people are saying it's stupid to wait. If they were in the same position, they'd be thinking the same

Wow these threads are becoming more and more pathetic. It's kinda like a bad car wreck that you don't want to look at but just can't help yourself.

Keep waiting. Forever. Like the cattle.

Amen, brother. It's like a parable about the sufferings of the greed-stricken. Forever in limbo, unable to commit due to their miserable fears of having anything other than The Newest Thing. Sad. But a valuable lesson for us all.

I don't see why you're being so negative. To most of us, the money these Macbook Pro's cost takes a lot to save. Therefore, I myself am very careful what I spend my money on because I'm a uni student and it's taken a long time to save this much money.

I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic. The difference between a 2.2 and a 2.4 ghz processor is one you will never notice unless you are constantly using 99% of both cores of your machine. If that's worth a six-month wait to you, go for it. But it's a hopeless strategy to keep holding off in hopes of buying a machine that will take slightly longer to become something other than the newest thing. You can't win. The only winning move is not to play at all.

I, like many others, am incredibly fed-up that there was no MBP update. But there's talk of a silent update in the next few weeks (processor upgrade etc.).

If that happens, will you buy one? Or will you wait for a major update knowing now, as we've seen on the MBA, that it would include a new design, multi-touch trackpad, SSD options etc.?

I was in the market for a laptop, in December. I waited for Macworld, saw the MBA and decided it wasn't the right laptop for me. So this afternoon, I bought a base MBP. It fits my needs. And if Apple releases an updated MBP in the near future, it won't make my MBP suddenly useless.

well, we know that the MBP will be updated sooner than later (sometime this year for certain). There are some things that Apple will obviously implement into the next major MBP revision such as the new trackpad, new magsafe adapter design, new keyboard etc. i wouldn't be surprised if Apple announce it at WWDC if not sooner (no other major product launches to headline WWDC that I can think of). Isn't Montevina scheduled for May 2008 release? Considering WWDC is traditionally held in June, the timing for the release is perfect. If you need a MBP right now, buy it. If you can wait, wait until WWDC.

here's one quote i've found relating to the possible reason for the lack of MBP revision even with Penryn release:

"With Intel having only recently launched its Santa Rosa Refresh platform-based notebook CPUs on January 6, the planned launch of Montevina in May has lead notebook makers to be cautious over their purchasing of Santa Rosa Refresh CPUs to prevent overstock during the platform transition, added the sources."

You, my friend have uttered pearls!! You have just helped me to see how foolish I have really been these past few months (all the while thinking I was wise to wait for the latest and greatest). I know I had to *convince* myself that it was better to wait, and wait, and that it was more prudent to stay my impulsive urges for want of an updated and more sophisticated laptop. After all, this IS a lot of money involved.
It's scary to think of how much the grip and power of the material world really is! It's even scarier when we delude ourselves into thinking this is normal, healthy, good behavior.

We see this same theme over and over and over in all the forums. It wasn't a half-hour after MWSF failed to produce the new MBP and people were asking when the update might come. Everybody is waiting for a rumored update, and it doesn't come, and the posts start again - "when do you think . . ." or "I'm not buying until . . .". It's freakin' unending! And it's freakin' everywhere here!
I was in your shoes and finally ended the wait with a purchase. Felt really, really, really good.

Ten points for you! :D And powerchord, glad I could help. Believe me, I did the waiting thing for a while, but others helped me figure out it just wasn't worth it. These are solid computers; there's no need to try to keep up with Apple and their six-month release cycle.

You guys are fools for waiting. I was going to buy an MBP in the end of december, but I told myself I would wait until MWSF which was when an update was expected. There wasn't an update, as you know. Despite this, I ordered on tuesday because I actually wanted to use my new laptop rather than read internet rumors about it. I'm now sitting at my desk typing on my new MBP, just upgraded to 4GB RAM from OWC. Suckers.

Look, at the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own opinions right? While some people obviously want or need a new laptop right away, I don't.

I can afford to not have a laptop for 2 months, 4 months, 6 months...all the time the money is building up interest in my bank account.

The main reason I refuse to buy the current line up is because I sold my 2.2GHz MBP because it wasn't sufficient (mainly I wanted a glossy screen and 250GB hard drive and it came with matte screen and 120GB hard drive). Therefore, I am not prepared to simply buy the same model but with just these 2 things ammended.

If I wait, the £140 I lost on my MBP would have been worth it, because I would get (potentially), the 2.4GHz for the same price as the 2.2GHz is at the moment and therefore that upgrade will only have cost me £140 (plus cost of bigger hdd)

Look, I know how you guys feel, really I do - I work with computers for a living. I was lucky enough to blindly buy the SR MBP within 2 days of it's release, I didn't plan it it just happened. If everyone who is waiting would just SLOW down and think for a minute, we will all be much happier in the end. If we look at what is coming on the horizon we know Montevina is coming later part of the year. This will be a pretty significant upgrade, DDR3, WiMax etc, etc. Anyhow, if you were Apple would YOU redesign the machine BEFORE the introduction of these new components? NOT A CHANCE. If they redid the chassis NOW and the Montevina specs are a bit different requiring more or less cooling then what? The old saying of 'measure twice, cut once' holds true here.

Even if Apple HAD updated the MBP with Penryn and an LED 17" screen there would be those that were b!itching and moaning that they didn't get this that and the other. My professional advice (hehe) would be to WAIT for REV2 of the redesign... this gives you at LEAST a year from now on the current machine - which lest we forget that it is a magnificent machine.

I do see where you're coming from, and I work in IT too (working solving problems with PC's all the times is why I want to use Macs so badly).

I am waiting for the penryn CPU, that's all. Would like a 256MB Graphics Card, but that wouldn't be a deal breaker as I'll be getting an iMac or Mac Pro anyway. But as I said in my previous post, I want to buy something slightly higher spec that what I just sold (and yes, the main reason I sold it was MWSF which was stupid, I know). But if I went and bought the same spec now that I just sold (and end up paying £140 more than I got for mine), that would make me even more stupid, so if I wait for the base model to be 2.4GHz (which is likely when the Penryn chips come to MBP's), then I will have got a slight upgrade (possibly a bit more) for my £140 (or maybe a bit less).

I love the design of the Macbook Pro's in all honesty. I would prefer to buy the current design because I may not like the next design and as you (and many other people on here) say, don't buy the 1st Revision of any new design because that's where many of the problems lay. This is also one of the reasons why I'm waiting for the iMac to be updated because isn't that still on its first revision?

Well, bit the bullet and got me a 2.2 MacBook Pro yesterday. I thought it through and realized that I am prolly going to sell this one off too for something better in a year anyway, so why wait?

Who knows, next year at MacWorld Apple might actually come out with a redesigned MacBook Pro or something else cool, so I can enjoy having this until then.

Soon!!!!

The exclusivity of Apple's new multi-touch trackpad to the company's MacBook Air family of notebooks won't last long, AppleInsider has learned.

The next models to receive the oversized trackpads will be updated 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro models due for an introduction in the next several weeks, people familiar with the company's 2008 product roadmap say.

According to those same people, the new notebooks will also be the first from the Cupertino-based company to employ Penryn-based Core 2 Duo mobile process from Intel Corp., which in their most likely form for the MacBook Pro would range in clock frequency from 2.5GHz to 2.6GHz with 6MB of Level 2 cache.

Although the new professional notebooks had been slated for an introduction at or around Macworld Expo, an executive decision was reportedly made late last year to push out the release by several weeks.

The delay is attributed solely to the need for additional resources and personnel to be placed on the MacBook Air project leading up to its introduction last week, as last minute tweaks to the super-slim 13-inch notebook were still well underway at the time.

Just received my MBP. 2.2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD. It is wonderful. And again, even if Apple releases a new and improved MBP tomorrow, my MBP will still do everything that I want/need it to do.

congratulations to the guys that have purchased a current MBP. I just hope you won't be too disheartend if a new one comes out in a week or so.
