I would say The Conjuring was the scariest thing I've ever seen.

A second place would be "Sinister" with Ethan Hawke. That one's pretty good with special effects

I have to agree that The Conjuring was scary as hell. However, I found Sinister quite cringy.

I found The Red Shoes (1948) pretty damn scary when I first saw it back then. It is certainly not the only film ever based on the utterly gruesome fairy tale of the same name (written by Hans Christian Anderson), and indeed it was not even as horrifying as the original story. I personally would not allow a young child to watch it, never mind hear or read the tale. I don't know what my mom was thinking except that I guess she really wanted to see it and there was no babysitter available. As an adult I really admire this classic film and have watched it many times, but the thing gave me nightmares for awhile when I was a kid.

Generally speaking of more contemporary "scary" films, I sometimes like thrillers --spy movies and such-- if they're not also action/adventure meant for 13-year-olds, but I'm not a fan of horror movies, not even the campy ones.

Frozen really scared the **** out of me :D

Before I became a horror film fan, I remember being scared to wits by the vampire kid at the window in 'Salem's Lot.

John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness has an ending that still scares the crap out of me. I am usually okay with the anti-christ stuff and some of the film is actually quite funny in that respect, but the ending is so messed up I have to go with this film.

When I was around 11 or 12 a buddy of mine and I started to get into scary movies. At the time we were watching things like Silver Bullet, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Howling, etc., you know, good old 80's horror movies. Well, one night his mother said our "horror" movies were just silly and that if we really wanted a scare she would show us a true horror movie. We popped popcorn, turned out all the lights and she made us watch Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte with Bette Davis. It worked, thoroughly freaked out, we both slept in her bed that night. :D

I just requested that from my library- I'll watch it tonight. I'm always up for a good scary movie!

^^ Seriously! Another classic, Suddenly Last Summer (1959) , is pretty scary too...

Enjoy it. I don't remember much, but I know as a youngster it really scared me. I think it was because before that the horror movies we watched were fantasy, you know ghosts, werewolves, special effects, etc., stuff that as a kid you know are not real. The reality of people hurting other people was so much more scary to me. What I do remember is that the scene with the stairs and the hand freaked me out the most. :D

I thought Signs was a good scare.

You didn't really see much of the creatures at all. Just brief flashes and lots of creepy noises. Freed from limiting visuals, imagination ran riot. Scared ourselves silly! :)

toy story 3.. JK LOL. probably pirates of the caribeen , i watched it when i was like 4 or 5.

During second grade, I started watching The Crawling Eye on TV and ran out of the room screaming. That is what minimal parental supervision brings about.
