I can't imagine that they won't intro the G5 iMac, since they've already pre-announced it. A new PowerBook is highly unlikely. A new version of Keynote would be great - it's been almost 2 years.

He's no Steve Jobs, but Phil will do an OK presentation - the products will speak for themselves. I'm sure that much will be said about ITMS, given the early success of the European version and Real's announcement.

If I were Phil, I'd come out in a turtleneck and jeans. :)

Just thinking with the Airport Express.
Wont it be cool if you could stream music to another iChat user (or if poss a couple of users) from iTunes

You can already re-enable iTunes sharing beyond the subnet, here is how it is done:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030602094254826&query=itunes+subnet

This sounds all very complicated but all the complicated instructions are only necessary when you sit behind a router or a firewall. Otherwise it as simple as installing the beacon on the computer you want to listen to music on and entering the IP of the computer on which the music is sitting.

I think the iMacs may NOT be announced at Apple Expo. Because:

1. Apple has said September, not August, so they are under no obligation to announce early.

2. Steve would want to do it. Waiting a little could let him do so.

3. Regardless, they'll still ship in quantity at the same time either way (September... at IBM's mercy).

I would be stunned if the iMac wasn't announced in Paris. Think back to Steve's last keynote where he typed "Paris" and "iMac" into his search. There was a reason for that.

Also, it's ready and the stock market expect Apple to steady the ship after going iMac-less for two months.

I would say there's an 80 percent chance or better that we'll see the iMac in Paris. There may be "one more thing" to go with it -- maybe not -- but we'll get the new iMac.

Plus, the Macworld review of PowerPoint 2004 was very favorable, and Apple isn't a company to let its buzz applications get pushed downmarket. I suspect you're right that we'll see Keynote 2 in Paris. Probably $49.

Phil isn't as charismatic as Steve. Gonna be a hard sale, especially if these iMacs are the crap they are reported to be.

Might be a stretch

Yeah, "crap" might be a bit of an overstatement. I'm sure they'll be quite nice, even if the preferrable specs don't come standard you can still toss another stick of RAM in there, and likely pay an extra $50 for a better graphics card.

I still think that Steve-o might just make a surprise appearance at this thing, just to prove to the world that he's functional. Well, mostly just the stock market folks. That would be quite a move. And if he isn't there, he'll show up via the NEW iSight, and definitely will NOT be wearing a hospital gown. That would be an image of weakness, which would be bad for Apple's strength on Wall Street. Even if he's still in the hospital, he'll throw on the patented black mock turtleneck before he clicks on the iChat window.

I have to say that i was quite disappointed to hear that Steve wasn't going to attend, seeing as this is the first Apple keynote that I'll see. Hopefully Phil will be able to bring some of Jobs' magic to release the new new iMac :) . Plus, I've never heard of an uneventful Apple keynote, let alone a bad one, so it should be just as fun with the added suspense of not knowing how/when steve will turn up.

If the high-end iMac G5's don't get better graphics cards than they have now, I'm not impressed. More RAM is a must (in the PowerMac's too!)!

Hope we see Steve in some way, and I hope too that he isn't wearing a hospital gown. Even though he would, it'd be like, custom-made for him with an Apple-logo and all...okay, just kidding. Wonder if new iSights and Keynote 2 are coming, though I don't see any reason why the iSight should be upgraded.

Well, given Steve's current condition and circumstances I don't think this should have come as a surprise/disappointment to anybody...

Not at all surprised. I just wish that they would update us of Steve's condition. Someone of his notoriety, the news media keep a close watch.

I think some may have misunderstood my previous post (no G5 iMac at Paris Expo). I didn't mean to imply that Apple would delay the introduction just because Steve is still in recovery (although he should be out of the hospital by now). What I'm saying is that based upon news reports during the last few days it appears that the G5 processor situation with IBM is even worse than anyone has previously predicted. Thus, it's possible that the G5 iMac will not be introduced simply because it's not ready to ship (poor G5 availability). If that is true there is really no reason for Steve to make an effort to do the keynote himself.

The G5 iMac is going to be a huge event given that the last big news in Macintosh hardware was in June 2003 (Power Mac G5). Thus, the G5 iMac is going to be the biggest news concerning Macintosh hardware in over a year (and likely the last big event until we see a G5-based PowerBook). Therefore, I think if the G5 iMac was ready that Steve would find some way to do the introduction himself.

I bet Phil comes out with a black shirt and jeans! I also think Steve and Phil will have an iChat conversation. Anybody else? To stay on topic though, I believe Phil is a good choice... he's one of those guys you don't have to know to really like. He's got a distinct speaking voice too.

Oh, I feel a dream sequence coming on........

Noah strolls out in a black turtle and jeans, to a rabid audience response, and starts in with his finely honed Steve schtick. Phil comes rushing out accompanied by two or three security folk, who gang tackle Noah and lay a cattle prod on his ass [OK, last bit is a stretch, but it'd be funny]. Everyone has a great laugh, and Phil gets down to business, introducing a few new Tiger features and maybe Keynote 2. When it comes time to re-hash the iChat features in Tiger, guess who is part of the chat group?
Steve will not be in Paris, but he'll still end up as the guy to introduce the new iMac G5. He couldn't let it be any other way. As much as I respect Phil, Steve is the only guy for the job. :D :D

keynote 2.0? appleworks 7.0? new imac g5? new powerbook G4 2.0GHz? new iSight ?
new Tiger demo?

if that happened, i wouldn't be surprised to hear comic book guy saying "best keynote ever"

aethier

PS: phil shiller, should be a good presenter, we have seen enough of him as steve's sidekick durring intro's of new products etc, it is time that he gets the stage for himself

That's never stopped Apple announcing a product before :)

Having said that, with the PPC970FX production concerns, I wouldn't be surprised to see the G5 iMacs announced with the caveat that they'll be taking pre-orders only. The 'availability' date may be a month or so in the future.

Assuming for a sec that the G5 iMacs aren't mentioned at all, when would the next opportunity for a product launch be? Off the top of my head, I'd say not until next year. With the current iMac being pretty much EOL'd already, we'd be talking a significant amount of time without an iMac in the line-up.

What I thought too. In quite much every Stevenote I've seen, and some Quicktime events, Phil has been talking in them, and I've found it comfortable to see him presenting something. He has a good, relaxed way of talking about things and enough "charisma" to do the keynote.

Having Steve in the keynote, even getting him to present the iMac G5 through iChat AV would be great.

Having a stunt-Steve was expected.

What I'd like to know is if Steve will participate from home. Will he reveal new products via iChat?
This will be a TOTAL STEVE MOVE to at least make an appearance at the conference via iChat. Thanks for considering it as it got me thinking...

I don't think he'll announcing anything, but I can see him talking a bit about his brush with cancer and his recovery process, along with making everyone feel good about his condition being nothing to worry about.

IMO, there will be no G5 iMac introduction unless Steve does the presentation himself. I suspect the recent news reports concerning IBM's continued problems with G5 production means that the new iMac is going to be delayed longer than was anticipated even one month ago.

I wish Steve Jobs all the best in his recovery from surgery, but I wonder if his no-show at the Paris Expo might actually mean that the G5 iMac has been delayed yet again (beyond original estimates).
No. I doubt you're right. He's got a big Ego but not that big ("No one gets the new iMac unless I and I alone announce it")... no way. There is money to be made... this will all go as planned. End of sentence. End of story.

They won't be introduced. The iMac is too important to introduce it along with another huge product. Better to get two announcements (twice the buzz) than just one big buzz.

It's like when the new new displays were recently announced,... there were no other discussions about other hardware -- it just keeps things more focused about the most important thing. Then it was the new displays... now it's the iMac.

I can't imagine anything that Apple plans to introduce that would be bigger than the iMac. The market will certainly be negative if Apple hold off on this, would indicate weakness. Just the fact that iMacs aren't shipping means something.

um crappy imacs? comments like that come from people who lack vision.

A new Powerbook with a Dual-Core chip not big? Certainly you're correct in saying that the iMac would be the bigger of the news, but the other is no slouch. I'm sure you can agree with me that both are pretty big news. Which supports my argument that only the one big news (the new iMac [which we all agree is huge]) is gonna make this ... and not the mention of the PB, which is the product I was responding to when ebally asked for opinions is announcements would be made. iMacs will certainly be announced (you quoting me makes it seem like I didn't think it would be)... try and be a little more discerning when deciding to quote someone when you have an opinion. There was probably someone out there who could have helped your cause other than me.
