Had to register just to post a correction image for the new iPhone.

Looks like the new iPhone is approximately 36 pixels thinner than the iPhone 4S (156 pixels) :) This would make it approximately 23% thinner.

(Your measurements may vary, I used Photoshop's ruler tool)

While I currently have 3-4 30-pin chargers lying around I'm excited for the change in connector. My iP4 crapped out because something got into the connector and neither I nor Apple could figure out what or clean it out sufficiently causing me to upgrade to the iP4S (which I didn't want to do).

I also like having the headphone jack at the bottom because I do put my phone in my pockets upside down as to avoid getting any pocket lint in the dock connector.

I know this is probably a very small issue for everyone else but for me its just those little things that make the new iPhone appeal to me. (that and LTE ;))

And as far as replacing speakers and such....isn't this the wireless age? Just bluetooth/AirPlay it....

It has 8 pins on the top and bottom, plus a ground (the silver part) which makes the count 9 pins. The orientation doesn't matter, as the 8 pins are mirrored on each side.

Thunderbolt needs 5 maybe 6 Transmit pins plus the same Receive pins (5 pins are data and 1 is ground which may be required for the Tx/Rx) There is also a power pin and a Hot Plug Detect pin that's 8 pins per side. Each side needs to be independent. Then add the ground. If the connector is actually duel sided that's 17 pins. Thunderbolt on your Mac is 20 pins but several are redundant ground pins. You could do Thunderbolt in 17 pins.

The connector would not need to be polarized like it is on your Mac if the phone can detect which side is Tx and Rx and auto switch, just like Ethernet on your Mac can use a crossover cable and detect that and switch for normal Ethernet.

I welcome the new dock/connector end.

It looks like it is reversable. This means no more flipping it over once or twice to get it rIght.

It looks like it is self-aligning. Micro-USB sucks and is hard to insert without being careful. Even apple's 30-pin dock is easy to damage.

My guess is Apple will be eliminating wired versions of audio and video in favor of AirPlay. Not enough pins left.

Apple has never cared to support older accessories or third party products for too long or at all. Each redesign stands alone.

The iPhone 5 may come with a 30-pin to 9-pin dock adapter if Apple feels it is worth it in customer upgrade satisfaction. This would be to ise old chsrgers with the new phone I give it a 50% chance. In 30days or less, cheap Chinese adapters will be available anyway.

The new iPhone looks thin. INCREDIBLY thin! I'd like to use a phone without a bumper or case to enjoy this thinness. However, I always found the 3GS to be the most comfortable to hold. Too bad Apple didn't give it the retina display.

I still don't follow why people say the 30-pin is outdated tech. It serves a purpose; will the smaller connector somehow do something better than the 30-pin? Just curious.

Yes. It will utilise the limited space inside an iPhone better by being smaller.

Not hard to think about at all. Get the 4S and stop complaining. Change is inevitable, and 10+ years with the same connector is an eternity in the mobile world.

This level of "fanboy-ism" is so frustrating and downright dangerous.

I understand that technology must move forward, but you really have to look at the motivation behind the change to gauge whether it's ethical or not. So far, what I've read is that the motivation behind the change is to make it harder to use unauthorized, 3rd party stuff, and to make the iPhone 5 more water proof. Seriously? That's it? They forgot motivation #3: to keep apple revenue at record high levels. This is unethical product design if you ask me.

I'm considering leaving apple for good because of this, I will not pat apple on the back with my hard earned money, the rest of you can, but not this guy.

Question for all those who believe that leaked parts will be the new iPhone....

Why so many leaks and nothing for the mini iPad? Seriously this is big joke and either the leaked parts are from the leaked schematics and used by sites like Goophone to do cheap copy of what they expect as new iPhone...

For me we are looking at prototypes parts used for game developers to test their code on a sample HW...

why is this concept hard to grasp... try it.

put your phone in your pocket upside down with the speaker facing up(better to hear someone calling too).

pull it out and look at it.. what side is up? Yea... the phone is right side up this way....

you've been flipping it for the past 5 years(if you've had all the iPhones) with the jack on the top and havent realized it.

Headphone jack on the bottom makes sense for all of these reasons plus the cable not danging over the phone when using it with headphones in. Also that puts stress on the headphone connector over time.

Well, this is not entirely true. I always carry my iPhone in my right inner pocket of my blazer. It is way more comfortable to have the upside facing upwards when pulling it out.

It doesn't affect me really since I am only using BT Bluetooth headphones anyway. Cables are for monkeys.

Haha

I'm going to laugh so hard when then new iPhone comes out and it's either going to be the dock connector did not chage at all or it's going to be a totally different design.

Yeah, this, and I always worry about rain getting into the headphone jack (which contains a water sensor so Apple would declare the warranty void if that would happen). So I generally have my finger on it when I walk outside in the rain, it's become a bit of a habit :)

Having it on the bottom would make sense for that reason too.

How would rain get in there if the headphones are plugged in. And if you put your iPhone upside-down in your pocket then this will now be an even bigger problem because rain could get in the headphone jack, the speaker, the loudspeaker and the dock-connector.

Moving the headphone-jack is a bad design choice and i would have preferred they didn't.

I'm too lazy to read through every comment, so:

Anyone else noticed that on the left side there are less holes than on the right side? Steve Jobs wouldn't have allowed such thing.

This doesn't look like an apple product. Even at an early prototype stage it looks overworked aesthetically and unresolved ergonomically.

In my opinion this is something that was fabricated to get the rumor mills going.

PS. The supposed new connector has all it's electrical pins exposed which means it will not pass safety regulations.

Ahhh completely incorrect - they shrink the dock connector in order to save space for other components - just like when apple adopted the micro-sim and the (rumoured) nano sim.

I still love the butt of current iPhone much more. Way neater and cleaner.

The new iPhone speaker/mic grills + headphone jack..
Yuuck, looks a lot like knockoff to me
