please pardon me while i go and throw away all my chargers and money
Hmm correct me id I'm wrong but unless your chargers are in form of a dock, all you need is a new cable. I agree that the connector change is annoying but as Apple i trying to shrink everything the current connector was just to large.

I run with my phone using the Nike GPS Running app and I'm always holding the phone upside down, so the cable is closer to my body and out of the way.

The app doesn't recognize the orientation of my phone and re-display like it could, so I have to turn the phone around again when I stop or slow down to read the screen.

So personally, I welcome the new headphone jack location.

Exactly!! :)

Still wondering if it will carry video. It has to right?

it wouldn't surprise me if it won't.
you have airplay, thus you should use airplay, screw everything else.

New way... digital audio is sent over the data pins... but the accessory will need extra electronics to turn that digital signal into audio and then send it to the amplifier.
...
Another option... future accessories will use the new dock connector for power... but rely on wireless to transmit audio.

But that still requires more electronics on the receiving end... and will raise the price of accessories.

that's what i meant, if it requires more electronics on the accessories, it means less electronics on the device itself, so it'll be cheaper to manufacture (not to buy, ofc!)
the tendency is always to shrink as much as possible to make things cheaper to produce. how many accessories came bundled with the first ipods? how about now? in few years they won't even provide cables or earphones.
this is the same strategy.

though many audiophiles may welcome native digital audio output, as long as it's high quality :)

This is exactly what irritates me about the new design. The loss of the several hundred dollars in peripherals, cases and adapters I'll sustain due to needless redesigns. Going to have to think long and hard about whether to get an iPhone 4S or the new iPhone.

I would not care if they changed the style every year. This phone is going to be epic.

Does anyone NOT put their phone upside-down in their pocket?

I always put it in my pocket with the top up; why in the world are you putting it upside down? So everytime you pull it out to make a call you have to flip it around first? wow. That would get old REAL fast for me.

why is this concept hard to grasp... try it.

put your phone in your pocket upside down with the speaker facing up(better to hear someone calling too).

pull it out and look at it.. what side is up? Yea... the phone is right side up this way....

you've been flipping it for the past 5 years(if you've had all the iPhones) with the jack on the top and havent realized it.

Headphone jack on the bottom makes sense for all of these reasons plus the cable not danging over the phone when using it with headphones in. Also that puts stress on the headphone connector over time.

But if you have the jack at the bottom you have to have your phone upside down in your pocket. I don't like that.

I can bet you 100bucks now that from 20calls after you finish with the call you will put phone upside down. Just think about it what is more natural way.
If phone is upside down when you reach for the phone and pull it out...part for ear will match your ear exactly and microphone will match your mouth.
If you put your phone regularly you will need to turn your phone in the hand to be upside down and then to put in your pocket. And vice versa when you want to answer your phone…reason your hand will be in totally uncomfortable position…

Maybe only first time when you wake up and you go out you will put phone correctly but after first call your phone will go back in the pocket upside down. It is just fact, jack for headphones are in better position if it’s on the bottom then on the top.

I actually noticed something different today - my current iPhone holder in the car is placed underneath the window - I JUST get it out whilst tilting the holder slightly - if the thing gets taller than I won't just need new accessories / adapter for stereo devices, but I might not be able to place the phone at the same location as it wouldn't fit underneath the same space in the car (would obviously need a different holder too) ..

Mmm....

As annoying as it is having to declare my old cables (and adapters) useless, I do welcome the new dock connector actually.

It's always been difficult to insert, and the way it's got an up and down side (indistinguishable in the dark) doesn't help. It doesn't fit very easily, takes quite a bit of force to insert and makes this awful scratching noise where the little springs at the edge hold it in place. And the elongated shape means you have to tilt it just right to fit in. It's not really Apple. On the iPad it's even worse due to the beveled edge.

I think the current dock connector is not something Apple made up, it looks like a connector designed by someone else that they've just incorporated into their own designs. It's good to see Apple do their own thing. Especially if the plug has 2 sides (I know the receptacle only has one side, but the plug part might have 2).

I also don't think it's held in place magnetically, you can see a little 'dent' on the side, I think that's used together with a spring on the socket to hold it in place. Should snap right in, it really does sound like a great improvement. And yes I do expect them to have adapters as well, there was less of a need for that with MagSafe 2 and they still made an adapter for it.

Yeah, this, and I always worry about rain getting into the headphone jack (which contains a water sensor so Apple would declare the warranty void if that would happen). So I generally have my finger on it when I walk outside in the rain, it's become a bit of a habit :)

Having it on the bottom would make sense for that reason too.

I still don't follow why people say the 30-pin is outdated tech. It serves a purpose; will the smaller connector somehow do something better than the 30-pin? Just curious.

People do this now, no problem.

Yeah, Apple should have stuck with dropping a floppy disk onto the Trash can, because people got used to it.

So when you take the phone out of your pocket you turn it around then look at it? Because if your phone is right side up in your pocket it's upside down in your hand when you take it out.

Thunderbolt?

So here's a wild speculation. It's actually compatible with Thunderbolt? You need a minimum or 8 pins on each side of a connector to give you a non polarized plug. One side is transmit and the other receive. You can do auto detect on the phone to pick the correct Tx Rx sides. However from the images posted of receptacle I can't tell if it only has 8 pins on one side. Oh well I figure Thunderbolt will come to an iDevice at some point soon.

My iPhone goes into my back pocket upside-down.
Thing is that it also always comes out of my pocket upside-down.
Some weird little swivel move that just happens naturally when I reach in and grip it with my thumb and middle finger.
I honestly have no idea how people manage to retrieve their phone without flipping it like I do.
Are you people putting your entire hands into your pockets?
How big are your pockets?
How small are your hands?
;)

Thunderbolt could potentially make the new iphone a full desktop machine when hooked to a thunderbolt docking station. Or a laptop when hooked to a portable docking station. That would be pretty awesome.

At the very least I'm expecting syncing times to be dramatically increased with this new connector - USB1 vs. USB3.

And lets see 128Gb please.

It has 8 pins on the top and bottom, plus a ground (the silver part) which makes the count 9 pins. The orientation doesn't matter, as the 8 pins are mirrored on each side.
