I wouldn't be surprised if Forstall was bullied out of Apple. Steven Jobs really appreciated his work as do many milllions. Was just watching recently WWDC 2006, 2007 and 2008 and Forstall really seems like a good guy. You can tell he really loved his work. He certainly knew the difference between simplicity and optimizations.

A lot of the technology and interactions in iOS 7 had onwards was already in iOS 6 and earlier. The only major difference was the superficial graphics which were sparse from iOS 7 onwards, and less sparse in iOS 10 as themes begin making their way back.

A lot of the Forstall haters here really need to acknowledge it was Forstall and team that gave iPhone and iPad their loving user interactions.

Such a big fan of the Computer History Museum too and can't wait to hear this discussion.

I would like to know his opinion on this matter.

It's kind of ok and kind of very not ok.

Books and talks by disgruntled, fired, ex-employees are not the best way of getting at the truth.
Forstall isn't disgruntled. He was bullied out of Apple by the way. Apple has a rather toxic work environment. Ask all the great engineers and designers who have left in recent years.

Remember Mobile Me?
Remember iPhone 6 6s and 7 protruding camera and a hump back battery pack?

Scott you should have just dropped your ego and said sorry about Apple Maps. Sucks you were so difficult to work with and got fired.
We've missed you and your ego is why we haven't heard any news from you for years. You've become that guy that has already done his best work. Thank you for it but man, you could have done so much more. I hate egos sometimes.

Seems like many assumptions

Fun reading all these comments that are anywhere in the range of hating Forstall to loving him or his work.

That screenshot of the first (?) control center on page 1 brought back some memories, wow. I loved the tiny animated reflections on the 'metal' buttons. Now it just looks really bad in my opinion. Design wise, purely looks, I didn't love everything about iOS 7, but with iOS 11 it's gotten a lot better.

Can't believe how ugly some icons still are, wasn't it the marketing team who screwed that up?

I loved what Google did with Material Design way better even though I never use Android products.

It's all so personal, but they're definitely aspects that affect the way one can understand and use the iPhone. iOS is -becoming more complicated every year, hard to say if the Forstall way would've worked any better.
Finally, some objective comments that assess a range of angles. Thank you!

Forstall! Really glad to hear from him. Please do come back, I'd welcome you with open arms. Get rid of Jony because he knows **** all about design.
I have an iPhone 5 running iOS 6 that I compare every new Apple device to, and even comparing it to my 10.5 inch iPad it is still rock solid, bug free, jitter free and fluid as heck in comparison (apart from the 120 fps). Even with the increased frame rate there are still lags and hangs here and there on this iPad. Throwing 120fps at it isn't going to magically get rid of all the terrible software shortcomings. Scott knew his stuff and getting rid of him was the biggest mistake Apple has ever made. Now we have bizarre design decisions (Music app), worse icons, ugly huge fonts that just take up precious space, and blinding whiteness everywhere. Honestly, how many times have we read on here people's disgust regarding the music app, constantly complaining about lag and how hideous most of their icons and UI looks?

Also, remember when we didn't need to practically beg for a dark mode? I honestly don't remember anyone wanting nor needing it because iOS prior to 7 had apps which had their own identity and colour scheme, not boring plain blinding white space constantly in your face. Not to mention Mac OS's bland look which is also ripped of all personality. Skeumorphism made Apple devices look premium (can't really say the same anymore). Scott and Steve both understood this. The skeumorphic design WAS Apple to me and was actually the reason that attracted me to them, then I used my first iPhone... and that lag free, rock solid experience is what made me stay loyal to them. Premium looking software with a true premium experience to match. Now Apple has lost both. It amazes me how someone who has such good taste in hardware can have such bad taste in software design. Looking at you Jony.

Come back home Forstall and sort this mess out for us, please.

When all your co-workers have consensus in hating you….. they're not the problem.
So pack bullying is condoned?

Wrong. Forstall was bullied out of the company. His coworkers had the issue.

Without Forstall, we wouldn't have had the insane leap in user interfaces from old style phones to new style iPhones. They created the breakthroughs. Just follow the timeline of events. Maps launch was rushed. Apple should have waited until it was properly ready.

Forstall and team were the reason for the success of iPhone. Forstall's absence is also the reason why iOS is not progressing, and why iPhone is not progressing in meaningful ways.

I agree,

What is it with people that they think when someone is a SOB, he is the right man to replace SJ.
Perhaps SJ was a SOB but his level of perfection and attention to detail was his strongest point.

Looking at SF and his maps, it def isn' t SF his strongest point.

I respect Forstall for not giving in and apologizing for something which wasn't his fault (data). He could have taken the "easy" route and apologized just to kept his job. IMHO Cook was behaving like a goon and a bully. Steve Jobs would have never apologized or pandered to 'haters'. Kudos Forstall, we miss your work.

I totally agree with the above. Further, where is the apology from Jonny Ive for the stupid Mac Pro trash can mac? Several execs and engineers came out to say that they designed themselves into a thermal corner...yeah? so where is the designer's apology? How about designing products for people, not designing for a museum 20 years from now, Jonny.

let's say someone doesn't believe Jonny should be out to apologize for that design?? Ask yourself, would Jonny have showed up to accept an award, you're god damned right he would accept an award, he does all the time. So he should be apologizing for that...the head of marketing and head of MacOS software shouldn't be apologizing.

Sir Jonny Ego.
