You aren't having issues with it. You damaged it. Maybe it did have "scuffs out of the box" but they weren't enough of an issue at the time to even complain about, let alone return/swap it over, so it's irrelevant now and just sounds like you're making it up. Would you believe your story? Really?

How can it possibly be that there are literally people that use the phone naked for months and have no "scuffs" and yet there are people who seem to have nothing but bare aluminum left after a week?

No, not "defective anodizing" Jay (LOL), it's called NEGLECT. And in various stages of it I'd add, because some are far worse than others.

Truly though, if it bothers you a lot, just get one of those old rubberized NexTel Sprint phones and be happy you can chuck it at a brick wall. If you want a NON rubber phone to remain flawless, you need to be careful with it. I know it seems like common sense, but here we are.

I don't "baby" mine, and I have been naked since lauch. One tiny mark by the volume rocker (finally noticed it) is about all the "issues" I have had.

On the other hand, they do sell OtterBox's if you simply can't be careful. The best part is, it'll cover up your "issues" AND prevent any more in the future (and yes, I realize if you have mental challenges you can damage a phone in an OtterBox... it's a tight fit for a reason, and if you go all crazy on it and slam it in it MIGHT cause some "scuffs" too lol).

Issue solved!

:D
I havent mistreated it or "thrown it about" at all as I mentioned I didnt even take it out of the house until I thought i had bought a sufficient case (a £20 hard case from apple) and have been extremely careful with it i cant see how this is a fault of mine when it is a £500 phone 3-4 weeks down the line.

I could understand if it was a few months or maybe even a year down the line and if i had mistreated it etc but i have been EXTREMELY careful with it yet this has still happened

Did I read this thread right.

Are you saying you want apple to replace your iphone due to the fact that a case you bought caused scratches on your iphone? Smh.

If the case caused scratches you should be taking it up with the case manufacturer. If somebody scratches your car in the car park, do you take it back to Ford and ask for a new car??(Really, come on.)

Op, ignore these people and do what I have done since iPhone...1...

1. Buy phone.

2. Use it with no case/skins/screen protector.

3. Before your warranty runs out, make genius bar appt.

4. Tell Apple phone is over heating or something. In my cases the phone has ALWAYS had a problem under a year.

5. Get new iPhone with plastic wrap.

6. List on eBay as brand new with plastic wrap. (If you intend to sell and get new iPhone like me)

Been doin' it since 2007. Never failed me yet.

So your telling the OP to lie and commit fraud?

More like selling refurbs as brand new online? I'd be so angry if I bought a "brand new" refurb.

its a manufacturing issue and is scratched through no fault of my own i bought the phone and didnt even take it outside until i had bought a good case, i bought one from APPLE and it has made the scratching worse.
I have not mistreated it at all and have been extremely careful with it and it still badly scratched 4 weeks down the line

tbh, it really depends on who you talk to and how strong your case is. you should have replaced it when you firstly got the phone.

as you did not mention it had a scratch straight out of the box to apple when you called the first time, it's normal that they did not want to replace it for you as it is not under warranty if it's caused by the customer. if you called them again and told them it had a problem straight out of the box, they would think it's very fishy as they should have a record under the serial number that you called them before about the same issue. i would not be too optimistic about the result. Plus, you had the phone for 4 weeks already.

however, you can try and maybe ask for a senior advisor. being nice and calm to the operator would increase your chance of getting a replacement.

as andrewR23 mentioned you could go to an apple store and tell them a story about how your phone is 'not functioning properly'. While I wouldn't recommend it as it's against my morals, there is no one to stop people from trying to do that. Although, you should be aware that apple has recently changed the replacement policy (USA first, then the rest of the world), they might run a test within the store and repair it instead of giving you a new phone. Not sure about UK at this stage. In addition, depends on the person, you might get denied for a replacement anyway if you could not demonstrate the problem at the spot.

I doubt a month later you can walk in there with a straight face and say all those scratches were there since you bought it.
If it was within days or at least the 1st week you got it ok but after a month it smells funny...

Sure, but what I am saying is at some point this becomes a problem with the quality of materials used. Which in my book should be under warranty. If a case can scratch a phone by taking it on and off. The phone has some quality issues. I have never had a phone that you could not take a case on and off of it and damage the phone. Why do you think this iPhone was under the scratch gate?

Generally from my past experiences when a case scratches the phone it is most likely due to small particles in the case that you are now sliding on and off your phone. That's usually the culprit not the plastic of the case itself. Either way apple didn't provide the case with the phone so even if it was the case, how is it apples fault? If I buy a part for my computer or car... Install it and my car or computer gets damaged because of the part, the computer or car manufacturer is now liable????

hmmm, what if you bought the part from the manufacturer?

he mentioned that he bought the case from apple. It means apple, as the manufacturer of the phone, reckons the case is fully compatible with the phone and should not cause any damage under normal use. if the scratch was caused by the case itself, apple should be liable in my opinion.

however, i agree with your first statement about the phone was likely damaged by small particles in the case.

Compatible yes ... But they are not the case manufacturer, apple sells Bose radio items in there stores if I plug my phone into a Bose dock and it fry's my iPhone who should I call?? I would guess Bose. Not trying to start anything I just think that once you have had a phone for a while if it develops scratches from use ...whether putting a case on or off or just everyday things, apple shouldn't be required to replace your phone. Also really what does the time frame have to do with the scratch? I could understand if the anodized coating was slowly wearing off but a scratch can happen the first day or 3 years down the road.

Im a thief? how? I never said once that I lied to get a replacement. I said in my cases, I have always had a real problem where the phone needs to be replaced. I then wait until I am about to sell.

But as for lying to get a replacement like over heating, it almost always works. I used to work there as a genius, and saying poor wifi or over heating will get you a replacement over 90% of the time.

Saying im a thief, made my day. Good day to you.

RED gives you away

You should have said, but failed to do so to the OP, " If your phone has had some issues, take it to the Apple store and have them look at it for possible replacement or in your case you should have said "My iphone had issues, took it to the Apple store for repair or replacement. But you did not.

The phone should come out of the box perfect. Plain and simple.

For those of you that think otherwise, you are clueless. Why would you accept an expensive product that begins with a problem?

Cars get scratches too. Do you buy a new car with a scratch and think it's okay?

News flash buddy, you ain't getting no phone in "plastic wrap" for something like this. You're getting a white box refurb.

It's apple's fault your choice of case caused the band to scratch? Wow, that's amazing.

but apple sold me the case so yes? if i buy a case especially from apple i expect it to protect the product not damage it

Though I'm relatively careful with my electronic devices and can get angry at times when finding a scuff or two, but this is ridiculous. You've already bought the phone for 4 weeks. You've already used them. How are you going to prove to Apple that 'oh you know, it scratches out of the box'. If it did, you should have done so within the exchange period. Now it's because of your use, Apple is blamed. Rubbish.

Sorry but I don't believe it. It doesn't matter how much it costs, and I wish people would stop acting like $500-$1000 means something has to remain flawless forever regardless of how you treat it...

Despite the horror that was "ScuffGate", there was never any conclusive proof that there was ever a problem with anything besides the level of care people gave their devices.

Could I give my naked phone to my 2 year old and get it "scuffed". Yep. Could I later go online and claim it always lived on a fluffy pillow and I wiped it gently all the time with a soft cloth, but that it was now falling apart for no reason even though I NEVER let my 2 year old touch it? Also yep. See how that works? People lie. It's the most reasonable explanation for your "issue".

If it was damaged out of the box you could have swapped it. You didn't.

The damage you have done since is entirely on you. Get something to cover it up, or get over it. Black Sharpie supposedly works, as does an OtterBox (which may be good for you given what's happened).

Keep the case you bought (it failed) and get one that covers the entire phone. Problem solved.

Again I say /thread

The black iPhone 5 is the most easily scuffed phone I have ever owned.

Agreed. My 4 and 4S looked perfect after 1 years of use. I have only seen 1 iPhone 5 that was prefect out of the box. I am currently using it with only a front and back protector. Still perfect luckily, but the black iPhone 5 is a mess.
