Dude, ditto. My 2 year old Black MacBook has virtually no marks after being carried in my backpack every day and used on countless tables and desks of all types.
Same with my iPod and iPhone 3G. Though those have InvisibleShields on them. Now I'm considering getting an InvisibleShield for my iPhone 4. Except the damned orange peel texture annoys me.

I absolutely LOVE the EVO fanboys. Love'em. You guys enjoy your brick with a Windows-style OS. I won't criticize you beyond this comment. I'll just enjoy the best user experience one can get on a phone.

I absolutely love Apple fanbois who declare whatever new dimensions for rectangle 'perfect' even tho they declared the older bigger one's perfect, and everyone else's products as 'bricks'.

They are all bricks!

OMG!!!!! Individual scratches on an individual unit: FRONT PAGE NEWS!

Next you're going to tell us these things can't stop bullets...

Oh boy, MR is awaiting iPhone 4 with feverish anticipation.

OMG stuff scratches!?!?!? Oh my! I'd of NEVER thought that things could get scratches!!!!

This is almost as dumb as the people who bitch about stuff "easily getting fingerprints".

You have that right. This is no surprise. They promoted how flexible the screen is and not scratch proof. Duh!

Bitches gonna bitch!

Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.

LOL. anyone who buys a case for a phone is just as clueless as those who buy bras for cars: "oooooh, i need to cover my beautiful property so it doesn't get ugly scratches. I know! I'll put an ugly case/cover on it! That way it'll always look new!"

Of course, no one knows it looks new, BECAUSE YOU COVERED IT WITH A BUTT UGLY CASE!

I have never had a cover of any kind on my 1st gen iPhone (which I bought at launch), and it probably has a couple of minor scratches on the back (and NONE on the glass) so what?

And don't say you want to protect it from getting broken. I use my phone daily, carry it in my jeans pocket, and have dropped it a couple of times. It really is durable and doesn't warrant such extremes.

But go ahead, cover that awesome industrial design that Apple worked so hard on, bulk up the world's thinnest smartphone, add distortion to the world's highest resolution cellphone display, and get all that added dust/lint that covers collect! At least you won't get tiny immaterial scratches on your phone!

Post of the Year!

can we sticky this post and point every macrumor member/visitor to this?

naked iPod

I use my iPod without any protection (heh) and only the aluminum back is scratched. the screen is still perfect. i carry it everywhere and tether it to my POS phone... of course, i don't place it in the same pocket as my keys.

i think i'll be able to use the iphone 4 naked

I am sure that phone has seen more abuse in five days than mine will see in it's life time.

Yeah, if you read the Engadget review, Josh states that they've been throwing them around and "even saw one hit a wall". I wouldn't exactly call this normal use.

Great analogy.

I've seen daily-used household furniture kept under wraps in a similar way - nothing like defeating its overall purpose and functionality, while masking it's uniquely designed features.

For those who wish to maintain a vintage condition, a suede jacket will afford protection without compromising the phone's integrity while being used.

The invisible shield might not be such a bad idea for the back. I would imagine it can be applied really easy because the back is completely flat.

Invisible shield is horrible. I am getting a clear film for the back, but invisible shield needs to be replaced because it starts coming off and stuff gets stuck in the sticky residue. Can't stress how much I did not like invisible shield.

This is why when I get a new iPhone 4, if I can get one this year... I'll have a Zagg shield installed on it or wait for a iPhone 4 OtterBox.

Surprise: glass scratches...

I think a much bigger surprise is that the iPhone 4 isn't clocked at 1GHz but at only at around 866 MHz according to first benchmarks that show that the iPad has a faster A4 CPU (1GHz).

And it's still 32 gigs :(

I bet the back of the 5.5G iPod video has scratches, and i bet the same goes for the front. Thats is unless you have a ghost armor or something like it since day one.

I absolutely love undercover EVO fanboys who rebut statements which were neither made nor implied. In faulty grammar and spelling, no less.

I never mentioned dimensions, as you incorrectly inferred. Nor did I imply perfection of the previous or even current generations of the iPhone. I was referring to the size. Which, in my humble opinion, is too big for a comfortable phone, yet too small for a mini-tablet.

Have you actually used an android phone?

Yes, I have used the EVO. It's impressive, but not nearly as streamlined of a user experience. It's essentially like using OSX on a computer with slightly less powerful guts than a Windows XP equivalent. More raw power means little when the software is less optimized.

No he didn't. They never claimed it was scratch or break proof. Only that it was stronger than plastic and previously used glass.

'Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.'

I guess the crux is the claim vs the reality. Is it scratching more than one would have believed vs the claims? Seems like not that much 'there' there. Pro Apple will not be moved based on this, anti-apple will not be moved based on this.

Yawn.
