Scratches Appear on Early iPhone 4 Review Unit

Why is this on front page news?

I love it when people say this, is a Mac news site, Hello! So far there is over 8 pages of comments, seems relevant for front page news being the iPhone 4 is brand new.

Quit playing site cop and be more positive. You will be a much happier person.

Wrapsol Ultra on the front and back and Apple Bumper on the sides. Ordered 2 weeks ago so that both will arrive on the 25th. I don't care what Apple's claim is regarding iPhone 4 scratch resistance, why worry about it at all?

For a small investment you get peace of mind and covers also help the resale value down the road which was confirmed when I sold my 3GS in "excellent" condition. Thinking ahead is a good thing.

Am I the only person who has a designated phone pocket?! I only put my phone in my left pocket (maybe headphones or something soft too). Therefore....no way for it to scratch.

Never been a problem for past phones. Only issue I had was dust under the 3G screen....now that was frustrating.

Re: dust

I had that happen with my 3GS. I'm hoping the new design of the iPhone 4 prevents this from happening.

I am sure that phone has seen more abuse in five days than mine will see in it's life time.

Yep. In fact I suspect that they have been trying to scratch it just to have an excuse for that photo.

And if you look in their review they claim they dropped the phone and it had no scratches.

So i'm wondering if it in fact it was scratched but you couldn't see it unless you turned up the lights and looked.

And something scratching when dropped really isn't a major shock

also, please stop calling it Gorilla Glass. That is a trademarked name and not by Apple.

this is why i ordered an invisible shield last week :-D you cant trust the claims by companies 100%. sure it may be durable, but you're bound to get scratches!

Exactly! He shouldn't have been screwing around with his phone. Let's remember that when you rub an object on another object of lesser density and strength it will scratch. This person should have been more careful. Enjoy your scratched phone.

They are tough to scratch. The ones with I have seen scratched the most often, don't be mad ladies, is the ones that, are thrown into purses to be pushed against all kinds of stuff. I got the iPhone 3Gs when it first came out, didn't know the camera focus was defective on it and took it back without a scratch on it months later to get a refurbished phone. Within two days, I had it in my pocket with my keys and put the worst groove on the glass next to the earpiece. That was my fault, not the glass being resistant to absentmindedness. What is Apple's fault was that stupid chrome bezel that was also on the back of the iPod and iPod Touches. I kept my iPod in a neoprene case for a year, when I took it out, it look like I had rubbed it with sandpaper. I am happy to see the brushed aluminum. I think I will invest in a pouch or sleeve with this one (which will definitely lead to me launching it from my hand when I pull it out in a rush, on pavement, in the rain, on the Grand Central Parkway. Maybe I should cancel my reservation, small heartache now instead of a big one later...who am I kidding, I am there at 7:00 AM because I am Mactarded.

Received mine today - black 32G.

The surface of the back side seems quite resilient, considerably more so than the back of the 3GS.

I've gone naked with the 3GS for a year, without a scratch on the back, or front, for that matter.

If moderate care is taken - avoiding placing keys, coins, etc. in the same pocket, I don't imagine that this rendition will scratch too easily.

BTW, the speed on this thing is remarkable, as is the stunningly vivid display, HD camera, and overall look and feel - a tremendous upgrade to an already great product.

Enjoy the ugliness as it begins to peel off and get crud under it when you put it in and take it out of your pocket.
I have had the same invisible shield on my Touch for 18 months now and the only thing I have noticed is a slight yellowing, it does not peel and there is absolutely no dust or crud under it.

Anyone with common sense (again, the majority of average consumers have no technological common sense) would know it's an expensive phone that has two glass sides with no good insurance plan and would either get screen (and back screen protectors now I suppose lol), invisible shield or just get a full on case if they are worried about dropping.

LOL. anyone who buys a case for a phone is just as clueless as those who buy bras for cars: "oooooh, i need to cover my beautiful property so it doesn't get ugly scratches. I know! I'll put an ugly case/cover on it! That way it'll always look new!"

Of course, no one knows it looks new, BECAUSE YOU COVERED IT WITH A BUTT UGLY CASE!

I have never had a cover of any kind on my 1st gen iPhone (which I bought at launch), and it probably has a couple of minor scratches on the back (and NONE on the glass) so what?

And don't say you want to protect it from getting broken. I use my phone daily, carry it in my jeans pocket, and have dropped it a couple of times. It really is durable and doesn't warrant such extremes.

But go ahead, cover that awesome industrial design that Apple worked so hard on, bulk up the world's thinnest smartphone, add distortion to the world's highest resolution cellphone display, and get all that added dust/lint that covers collect! At least you won't get tiny immaterial scratches on your phone!

I would love to know how they scratched it. I've totally abused my 3Gs for a year, never had a case, throw it around, have dropped it: a 2mm scratch on the front is it.

My 3GS only has an incase slider on it. Nothing on the front screen and I have had no issues after a year. It fell off my desk yesterday and did a couple of bounces. No problems.

My iPhone 4 will be the same. However I will only put a shield on the back. Something crystal clear to not ruin the look of the phone. That is the only protection I want or need.

It's a phone. It's also an portable electronic device for music, movies and internet. I treat it kindly but I don't baby it. I also don't treat it like crap either. There is happy medium. :)

I'll definitely go with a back shield. Funny how it's gone from a film for the front to a film for the back glass.

I used to use a company out of Brazil called Vaja that makes great leather cases for just about everything. Had one when I had a RAZR. They're great quality leather cases that you can customize, add just about anything to them, and they run from $80-$200 for iPhone 3GS cases (and they have iPad cases and iPhone 4 coming).

Go to your kitchen. Open a cabinet, pull out a glass and look at it. See any scratches?

You know, I never even thought to look and I always assumed any scratches were from rings and such. Guess you learn something knew everyday.

Will the iPhone 4 blend? That's the more important front page question.

Saying that is getting as annoying as "Is Safari snappier?"

Sigh... why do people do this? You are at a restaurant and you set your phone down at the table. WHY????

Agreed. We were at an expensive restaurant ($150+ for two) and a couple had their phones out on the table and one was even using it. Dumb.

Anyway, it looks from the photo that they tried to scratch it on purpose. See the deliberate strokes from scratching?

I do as well. No problems on my original or 3G. I've had 3 3GS phones in the past year and all 3 had tiny scratches on the screen.

Strange huh?

Same, i had the 3GS, never had any case, i put it down on restaurant tables all the time etc. I even went clubbing with it every week in my jeans pocket, dropped it, you name it, i did it. No scratches on the front, few on the back but nothing major. Was fine. Anyone who gets scratches on the front really is a dumbhead.

Anyone one who keeps their keys in the same pocket as their iPhone or Touch deserves to have a ghetto looking device. Let common sense prevail, that being said I would go with a minimum of a Zagg shield on the back, maybe a front shield and those bumper bands. For my 2G Touch I have used an Invisible shield and several Switcheasy cases since about day one and after 18 months my Touch still looks new.

Surprise: glass scratches...

I think a much bigger surprise is that the iPhone 4 isn't clocked at 1GHz but at only at around 866 MHz according to first benchmarks that show that the iPad has a faster A4 CPU (1GHz).

Is this the phone that Joshua chucked at the wall? In the long engadget review they note that they chucked the iPhone at the wall, with and without the bumper and noticed no damage. And dropped it on the ground.
