I'd say it's the phone, if it was a software glitch, 5 million people would be saying something. It's a hardware glitch for sure.

Yup hardware for sure. Apple really planned ahead with this issue on iOS 6 when installed on iPhone 4S.

Been happening to mine since I got it on the 21st.
The lines have been different colors every time it happens.
Do yo guys think it's worth taking it in to Apple store for replacement, if they even have any?

I took a video of the lines...

Happened to me once today, when buying an app. Not worried; I'm sure Apple will issue a bug fix.

Same for me...good point is that I cannot capture it using a screenshot so it leads me to believe its a hardware failure.

Any updates on this? I haven't had the issue again since the first two yesterday.

Edit: Spoke too soon. Happened right now.

DISCLAIMER: I am (mostly) talking out my ass, here. This is entirely speculation, and I'd love to hear from somebody who knows more about display technology.

That said, we don't know when the data for the screenshot is being grabbed. It seems like there could easily be a software error between the screenshot data being grabbed out of the display buffer or wherever, and that data being passed on to actually be displayed. That would explain the error's appearance on the 4S as well as the 5, and only appearing during a specific software based action (I would be very surprised to learn that there is a unique hardware action being performed during an app purchase that triggers the glitch).

No need to be dick about it, this is speculation...this is a "forum" everyone should take what anyone says with a grain of salt.

I was only suggesting my thoughts based on previous experiences. With that being said, a senior advisor with AppleCare confirmed my suspicion that this is a known display issue that's hardware related. I'm still trying to get a resolution on it.

If you want to believe that it may be a software issue then let your ignorance guide you. I however, will err on the side of caution and swap it out.

...Since I'm the only person who replied to your comment, I take it you interpreted my comment as dickish. That was the furthest thing from my intentions, I had hoped my disclaimer would provide the necessary context that I was completely speculating, and that was all. I'm sorry if that didn't come across well.

Lol.. "Dickish"? That's too funny.

I had this problem with my 32gb iPhone 5 for Rogers, but it seems to have stopped now... Just tested by downloading a free app and I didn't see any distortion. If it keeps happening I'll see what I can find out at the store.

My iPhone 5 was not restored from a backup when I set it up so it was fresh yet I saw this. It's not happened since I first reported it but I'm sure it could happen at any time.

I'd have to say general thinking if you cannot screenshot it that it would be a hardware issue but it might be a software issue with the graphics drivers.

If you think about it the A6 has 3 graphics chips so each chip should be drawing 1/3 of the screen each. What if this is a problem with the drivers stitching the display together from where it crosses 2 separate graphics chips? So it could be the driver sending the wrong information to each of the chips so they get rendering artefacts.

It's just a guess of course. It's got to either be something like that or a hardware fault. There's a good few people that have this but it seems its virtually all people on iPhone 5's and clearly must be people without this problem else it would be much bigger news. So if its not affecting all iPhone 5's then it makes it a hardware fault.

The issue is that maybe a lot of people aren't buying Apps a lot yet to have seen it... I wish Apple would put statements out on this kind of thing so I know for sure if I need to get my device changed or not.

Does not happen to my device.

Maybe its related to the language you use for iTunes? Am I wrong?

Although Iam Swedish I still use English as language on my iPhone 5.
