I've been extremely careful with my iPad 2 and found a scratch on it today. I am quite disappointed in myself since I don't even know how it got there. I use a microfiber cloth to clean it off. I've had the smart cover since day one. I had the iPad one and wasn't as careful with it and there were no scratches after a year.

Scratches don't get there by themselves. Someone has to scratch it. Be a little more careful with these devices. I like how everyone has mysterious scratches out of the blue.

No scratches, but is being replaced tonight for light bleed.

I bought a screen guard today to put on it when I swap it over.

Will get the Genius to install it so I can avoid any nasty bubbling.

If you buy screen protectors, screen will get quicker dirty, smudgy, device with 10 inch screen never will good look with screen protector ....Apple design beauty full things, and they are for using not for watching from all sides every day...Where is a point to buy such a nice and thin device and putting on it some nasty cases, cheap screen protectors or s..t like Invisible Shield.Relax and enjoy it

I got a scratch not even a week of having it, this after being real careful. Scratch on screen was quite visible and even more when I went for an exchange due to the stores brightness. Backlight bleed was my excuse for taking it and for a dead pixel, that damn pixel wasn't far from the scratch and I was worried they wouldn't let me exchange. The girl was in the back for a long time and I felt my chances weren't good, finally she came out with a brand new one.

I still have the factory plastic on, a week with it already, any recommendations on a sp?

I found 2 deep scratches on my launch day iPad 2 w/smart cover. I never scratched my iPad 1 like this. The iPad 1 would have to be held under light at angles to see even the slightest scratches in the olephobic coating.

I believe this to be caused particles being picked up by the "microfiber" lining of the smart cover being rubbed against the screen. If you aren't careful what you are setting the iPad 2 w/open smart cover on it is quite easy for it to pick up dust or particles.

I believe my scratches were caused by some kind of grit being picked up by the smart cover that rubbed into the glass while closed in my backpack.

I have since returned that iPad 2 for screen bleed issues. I took my new replacement iPad 2 (in sealed white retail box) to my nearest ghost armor kiosk and have them install a ghost armor screen protector straight out of the box. I quite literally pulled the plastic off the new iPad 2 and handed it to the ghost armor guy to install the protector. Also installed an iCarbons rear skin.

After having the ghost armor for a few days I can say I'm sold. Lifetime warranty if installed by kiosk and the look and feel is great. It has a very slight "orange peel" effect but only visible under certain light. I really love the feel. Also highly reccomend the rear skin from iCarbons. (not in love with the ghost armor rear skins, iCarbons have a better cut/fit IMO)

From now on I am taking a closer look at the inside of my smart cover before closing. Make sure it's crud free before laying it on top of your beloved iPad 2.

On my first iPad I put zagg screen protector on. I was going to do the same thing with this one but after one night of using my ipad2 with no screen protector no screen protector on this one it feels so much different with no screen protector on it it's like night and day I have smart cover on it and to be honest everyday with my first iPad with the screen protecter on it tons of fingerprints this one hardly any. Definitely feels way better with no screen protecter on it

I like how you're dismissing these as if someone is doing something completely wrong here and trying to cover it up. Sorry Scully, there's no "ScratchGate" here.

Scratches happen and when you least expect it. It's no different than getting a new car and consistently parking it at the end of the parking lot away from everyone. You also don't use keys to open the door as you have a remote. Yet, some how with a few weeks you notice a scratch or two near the keyhole or on the side of your car. Basically, crap happens regardless if you're aware of it or not.

So yeah, people can get "mysterious scratches out of the blue". It just seems a bit condescending to me. I guess, wait till it happens to you.

Ha no scratches on my original iPad and do not plan on any on the iPad2. Just take reasonable care and use it a LOT!:p

The surface hardness of the glass is hard enough to avoid scratches on it, due to normal use (not for abuse).
If your iPad or iPhone are easily scratched then you have a glass with low hardness. Or you are not being honest with your story and something harder touched the glass and scratched it.

i have kids who use the ipad and i am not comparing the first galaxy tab to the ipad2 but

my kids played hours and hours and hours on the tab and not one scratch!

within a day or two we have multiple scratches on the ipad2. zig zag lines etc... it has to be from games.

I don't see how you can manage to scratch an iPad screen that easily. It's not like you're going to scratch it against stuff, eg. keys in a pocket. I just keep a smart cover on mine and so far have 0 scratches on it. More worried about the back of the device tbh.

I never use a screen protector for the iPad... I never had a scratch on the original and still don't on the iPad 2 either. Not sure how this could be common.

My iPad1 still doesn't have a single scratch and have never user a protector, expect for the Apple iPad Case.

The iPad's glass would only get scratched by annobject that has a higher density.
So if you wear jewelry, make sure it doesn't scratch it. Specially rings with stones in them

Too bad the iPad's surface is not glass, it's Apple's special oleophobic coating that by all accounts scratches easier than glass.

I definitely agree that gaming on the ipad scratches the screen. My son played a ton on mine and it had a thousand tiny scratches on it. It guess it comes down to dust being between the finger and the screen when you swipe at it. Some dust is apparently harder than the coating on the screen.

Ghost armor is the best. You will thank me later. Feels like the actual glass. Honest can't even tell on plus will hide the current scratch

Agree!

My story is identical to Natesac's above. Got some scratches within a few days (I blame Fruit Ninja and finger nails!), swapped it out at Apple, had Ghost Armor installed at the mall kiosk before I even had a chance to power the new iPad on for the first time (which I suppose is a little risky now that I think about it).

Anyway, GA has been good. I really enjoy not worrying about scratches!

ok, this may be a stupid question  but is the coating less susceptible to scratches over time? I mean, does the coating "harden" or "cure" as time passes or is it always easily scratched?

I feel like I'm always negative on here... but seriously people, stop buying into gimmicks like screen protectors. JUST TAKE CARE OF YOUR THINGS.

I found a way to avoid scratches on my iPad 2: use a decent stylus pen like the Griffin Technology Stylus:

Works for me! :)

So does that mean no gaming, or just no games like Fruit Ninja, or maybe no gaming for people with fingernails?

Seriously, I think it's clear from various threads here that some people do feel like they are "taking care of their things" and still getting scratches. So for people like us you'll have to explain why a screen protector is a gimmick.

I found myself wondering the same thing. I honestly don't know, but I hope that's the case.

I suppose you live in the land of perfect where things don't happen but I don't. I am a freak with taking care of my equipment but mistakes happen so a screen protector is a great idea.
