Sorry, I do not see the big leap from 10.5... this is not worth paying 130 bucks again...

I can't get my Mac Pro's processors to work much more than 70%. I really enjoy watching a 3 hour render when I know my machine could be working faster.

If Snow Leopard allows applications to tap into the hardware even more, then it would be worth $500.

AGREED.

I can't wait for Snow Leopard. I think it's a bold move from Apple to say they're going to do a release that is almost all under-the-hood, but goodness me it should be welcomed. If they charge the full price for the upgrade I wouldn't complain, but I expect they'll do a bundle with iLife and iWork to help people upgrade everything in one go.

The most exciting prospect for me is native Exchange server support. If iCal, Address Book and Mail can all connect to Exchange as first class citizens I'll be over the moon. I'd also love to be able to join an AD domain and get the single sign-on goodness that Windows has, but just Exchange would be fantastic.

I don't expect anything much from Grand Central - maybe video and audio compression will be faster -- good for HD camcorder footage -- but it won't make any real difference day to day.

speed is good, but i think snow leopard should just be a paid for 10.5.7 upgrade. it doesn't seem good enough to be a new OS, but better than a 10.5.x upgrade :/

That's just because we've seen no Nehalem benchmarks.

:/

Nehalem looks good, but i really want some GUI changes in snow leopard. I know snow leopard is not about that but, it looks identical apart from around 2 other features ]so far.

But knowing apple, they'll probably wow us, with whatever they have.

You're probably one of the 50-60% that would be better off sticking with Leopard, then, as very many will.

Snow Leopard is about speed, not pretty. It's the antithesis of Vista to XP, and more along the lines of System 7 from System 6.

Any more details about OpenCL? How much of an improvement can one expect with a 9400 for applications that have been optimized? The equivalent of a single core processor or more? I hope Apple will bring out an update for Logic that supports OpenCL at the same time they roll-out SL.

I'll still probably get it, i do need a bit more speed, but a few more features would be good. Although we can' say much, after all, this is a rumor site.

I am half expecting them to introduce lots of new features in addition to what is talked about. I do not expect as much as leopard but 2-10 new features is unlikely. I just hope it works on PPC

Well, yeah... but that was the point I was originally making. If they Snow Leopard binaries are smaller than the Leopard one without modification, does that indicate a change or simply that they aren't complete yet, such as not shipping all the localizations.

Not sure what they are doing since Mail seems to have some languages in the screenshot and its only 36MB. They are also saving space by combining core graphics into frameworks and the system so that they all are referencing the same files. But the localizations are huge in Apple's apps normally.

I am really excited about this release. I am hoping for a big performance boost.

Even though I am a avid mac fan, I have to say, after seeing the windows 7 beta on my friend's computer...I am slightly concerned. I hope snow leopard can wow me like windows 7 did.

I can't wait for Snow Leopard either, even though I've already got a (torrent downloaded) developer build.

Having said that, it's obvious that there's still a lot of work to be done here - Finder crashed every five minutes after consuming ~90% CPU; iTunes, iPhoto, Address Book and Mail refuse to connect to their data stores; half my Quick Look plugins (including iWork '09) don't work...

I could go on and on. On the other hand, the areas where there is clear improvement shows a lot to desire. Finder (when it works) feels snappier than it has in ages, System Prefs and Software Update are both more intuitive.

Here's a few other (minor tweaks):
  • In Icon view in Finder, there's now a little slider on the bottom right hand corner to change the icon side.
  • There's been some changes in X11 - as seen by the icon on page 1. I don't know what's been done, but X11 and Gimp are distinctly faster.
  • Much smaller OS size - just 5.43GB installation disc, as compared to the ~7.5GB for Leopard.
  • Rosetta, printer drivers, and language packs, have become optional install extras.

When I get the time, I'll run some benchmarks and post them running against a Leopard system. However, I'm running 10.6 on an external HD - will this throttle the benchmarks?

[edit]I don't actually find the new Stacks folder drilling feature too easy to use, IMHO.[/edit]

don't have to guess too hard

When are these supposedly "GUI" changes going to leak out..

you are beginning to see it. the trash section has the same "marble" interface as mobileme/iwork.com. you should already know how it's going to look with just those examples. just add in itunes scrollbars, gray highlight buttons, and you should get the picture.

i like the new system preferences. the current one is far too muddled compared to this

Snow Leopard is looking to provide a lot of needed functionality! I just hope they manage to find all the quirks and inconsistencies so it truly fixed everything. Another which would be nice too is the rumored "Marble" interface update. It seems to be progressing very nicely.

Price: I find it difficult to see how people can complain about the price of Snow Leopard. It will be greatly cheaper than the only other slightly comparable retail operating system at the time of release which will probably be Windows 7 Ultimate, maybe still Vista Ultimate. Last time around it was Leopard against Vista Ultimate which was £120 against £330. No comparison, my wallet wasn't happy with Microsoft there, Vista high price poor performance, Leopard low price great system.

Features: A classic Microsoft ploy, add on fluff useless features that only add more bugs and problems to the operating system, dont bother with the actual major issues and use the fluff as sales material. Through only a few pages of this thread there have been multiple posters that only see any value in additional features, basically the short sighted who think they are tech savy. The real value is definitely to be found in an operating system that is going to have a smaller footprint, have much greater performance, create good foundations moving fully into the 64 bit realm and also because of that becoming greatly more secure. To anyone with a modicum of common sense the Snow Leopard route is by far the best.

Cant wait until it comes out!!

Dude, don't get your hopes up for any big performance boost nor the expect W7 wow. All the under the hood changes won't be felt by end users for a while especially if you just browse web, im, iphoto. There won't be any massive performance boost like that.

In my opinion, Snow Leopard may first become a disappointment in the general public and the CLUELESS MEDIA compared to the W7 launch. Instead for many end users, it'll be one of those upgrades where they go "eh nothing changed.....(2 weeks later).oooh cool that's a nice improvement they added. i did not expect that..."

Instead of massive VISIBLE changes like in Leopard, we'll see massive MINOR changes in Snow Leopard that will be enjoyed by many of the leopard users.

Looks like between you guys and TUAW, you brought down the World of Apple's site. Nice.
