Hi, was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what external hard drive to buy for what reasons. Does it even make a difference or are you just looking at the price these days?

I'm looking for reliability, speed, and low noise level.

I read that the Canvio is quieter and has a better padding; speed and connections seem to be the same. Seagate as a brand seems to be more recognized.

Any thoughts welcome.

Are these
- SSDs or platter-based HDD's?
- portable (2.5") or for desktop use (3.5")?

If you want "speed", you need an SSD.
If you want "low noise level", SSDs are dead silent.

What Mac do you have, what year was it made?
What kind of ports are on it? USBa or USBc?

Have you considered making your own drive, using a "bare" drive and an enclosure of your own choice?
