After reading through 12 pages I'm under the impression that the 17" Unibodies and Pre Unibody MBP have almost no vibration problems.

Is this because there is simply more "play" room for the hardrive?

Slightly offtopic Question:
I need 500GB NOW, but not so sure if I should go 7200RPM. How much faster is a 500GB 5400rpm compared to a 250GB 5400rpm drive?

Its nothing to do with having more "play"

That's a great point about varied standards. How about comparing the 7200 rpm drive to a stock FUJITSU 160GB HD that came in the MBP before the unibody.

Is the 7200 rpm drive louder or the same as this drive?
and
Does it use more, equal, or less power? (Less? I know how it sounds. I'm trying to research the threads and someone mentioned it uses less power because the drive is more efficient)

Thanks. I'm looking to put in order very soon for either the Seagate 500 5400 or 7200 rpm drive. Patience is hard to come when shopping for new goodies.

Hi machomer,

For me noise was not the issue. It is a very quiet HD. I just have had vibration with it and every other 7200 rpm drive. I have to believe they all vibrate, and that it wasn't just luck that some say theirs doesn't. I even tried cushioning the drive with pads, etc. but nothing changed it. It was like having an electrical tingling when you rest your hand on the right side palm rest. This of course was on a 15" unibody.

I noticed that currently, my fan is pretty loud when using VMWare Fusion.

I've purchased from a lot of places that have poor customer service to get the best price vs. paying more from a place known for their good customer service. Like PeterKG, I always pay with a credit card. I know that I'll always be able to get my money back by requesting a chargeback if something goes wrong.

As far as Tiger Direct overselling the drives, it's very common for resellers to drop ship directly from a distributor, so it can be difficult for a reseller to know when inventory is depleted, especially for a new item that sells out quickly. I agree that requesting a credit card refund for an item that wasn't shipped shouldn't require pulling teeth, but refunds don't happen instantly. They really do take 2-3 days to post.
That was true 10 or 15 years ago. Anyone who follows this business model today has, at best (I'm being generous here), serious supply chain issues. There are any number of technologies (webservices, soap calls, etc.) that can be used to manage inventory numbers between a vendor/reseller and a retailer. If TD can validate your credit card number through their credit card processor, they can validate inventory against the manufacturer or reseller.

And personally, a chargeback should be a method of last resort, not a modis operandi of doing daily business. That's why TD has such a crapactular reputation from those who have experienced their manner of doing business. Charging your credit card before something ships is totally uncalled for, when they can effectively "reserve" that space against your credit limit and clear the transaction when the goods ship.

And, at the end of the day, its totally unnecessary when other companies (cough, newegg, cough, cough) have set the standard for how it should be done.

I need to get this drive soon. I only have 4.17GB available!!! I'll prob. hold off until OWC has it available. They have great customer service.

i may on my way to work/home tomorrow pick one up. i am in such need of space! photographs and work! i have the 2007 model 15 incher.

Got my Tiger Direct order from Thursday delivered today and installed it this evening. Again, this is in a late '06 MBP 17", replacing a 200/7200 Hitachi. The most obvious difference is that it runs MUCH cooler than the Hitachi did. I made sure to have everything in the room off and could not hear the drive at all. Nor do I feel a bit of vibration. Can't really speak to speed since I've been at 7200 for a couple years. Seems to purr along just fine.

Cooler and quiet? Going to take the plunge.

Checked Tiger Direct and could not find it on their site. Newegg is out also. Just my luck. Anyone buy hd from Buy.Com

Yeah, that's really strange that it has completely disappeared from Tiger Direct and CompUSA's websites (one and the same, now, I believe).

Yes, most definitely cooler. Now that I've used it for the evening, I will qualify on the quiet part. I can hear it accessing every now and then, but nothing ridiculous. I don't think I ever heard my Hitachi accessing at all though.

Tonight I tried to install this drive again. My external HD drive had this rubber bushing around it to keep it stable inside the enclosure. I put it on the Seagate HD, and installed in my MBP. No vibration! Completely quiet too. Amazing. I transfered my data, and Spotlight has just finished indexing. I am a happy camper now, and look forward to seeing the speed increase with this drive.

Good news. Any chance you took a picture of your handiwork?

Cheers

Rubber bumpers do go a long way with vibration.

I know that my old ata 100gb 7200 rpm Hitachi in a 12" Powerbook was quiet, the Western Digital 5400rpm 250gb that replaced it last year was slightly louder.

I have no fears at all about the 7200 500gb Seagate in my MB aluminum.

I'm sure it will be fine.

For those of you who have upgraded from a 5400 RPM drive to a 7200, what is the difference when it comes to battery life. Are we talking 15-20 mins different or an hour less? I am interested in this drive, but I am weighing battery life vs. Performance. Thanks in advance

Where do you buy these rubber bumpers?

Well I've got the Seagate 500GB 7200 in my hands but not yey the laptop - late 2006 MBP 2,33 - I'm waiting to get it, should be tonight.

For those in Belgium, Padeg show it in their online catalogue but no stock:

http://online.padeg.be/c2s_products/c2s_ProdDetailsL9.ASP?ID=61&Type=SUPERSTORE&ref=50605154

I got mine from ppixel.be:

http://pc-store.ppixel.be/article-e...eagate_Momentus_500Go_SATA_25in_72004rpm.html

I thought Eurodisk have it in stock for a ridiculously low price but now I see it's the 5400 model:

I've noticed no difference in power consumption whatsoever in 3 weeks of using this drive in my MBP.

Issue with Momentus 7200.4 500GB G-Force HDD

I posted this in another forum, but thought I'd repost it here because the information may be relevant to some/all of you. In terms of availability in Australia, 17th of March is the latest date for the new shipment. I was lucky to get mine about three weeks about but they promptly went out of stock.

Below is my post regarding an issue I've had with the G-Force version of the drive, I'm now awaiting stock of the non G-Force version.

Hi,

I'm yet to find anyone with this same issue, but I'll share it just so someone doesn't have the same troubleshooting hassle I did.

A couple of weeks ago I got a Seagate 7200.4 500GB 7200rpm drive (G-Force version) in anticipation of my UMBP 17 inch. In the meantime though I thought I'd install it in my 15inch UMBP. I did this at work and just did a straight mirror (not using Migration assistant, which usually works) to the new drive. I then installed it into my laptop. For the first hour or so it worked, but then completely froze, just the rainbow wheel going around. I turned it off and back on several times, each time freezing within three minutes of startup.

That evening I came home and it appeared to be fine, but I thought I'd run a recovery and then use the migration assistant to bring across everything instead of a straight mirror. This worked and I used my computer for the entire next day from home with no issue.

Next day went back into the office and exactly the same problem, freezing within three minutes. I unplugged all accessories from it, left it up on it's little stand (so it's level with my LED cinema display) to see if removing all the cables solved the problem. No, it didn't.

Might I note, that by putting in my old hard drive everything worked as it should at home and at work.

After then reloading to the 500GB completely from scratch, re-installing apps etc. it again worked at home, no problem. Took it into work, freezing again, without even being plugged in.

it then dawned on me that the only thing that was different between home and work was that at work I have it up on a stand (http://www.raindesigninc.com/mstand.html) which keeps the laptop on a tilt of about 40 degrees. I took my laptop off this stand and sat it flat on my desk and voila! it worked perfectly.

So it would seem that this hard drive will freeze after 3 minutes or so if it's running on an angle of about 40 or 45 degrees. Now I'm not sure if this is a completely faulty drive, or something to do with the G-Force feature but in any event I've ordered the non G-Force drive to replace it. Until then I'll just keep it on a level surface.

Apologies for the long post, but if it saves one person having to reload their computer three times and waste hours of their time.

G-Force conflicts with the built-in sensor, I forget how, but you can turn the built-in sensor off.

Disabling the Sudden Motion Sensor in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5:

In Terminal, you can disable the Sudden Motion Sensor by typing sudo pmset -a sms 0 and pressing Return (changing the setting to a zero disables the module).
Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return.
Type the sudo pmset -g command again to be sure that the setting has been applied.
Any changes that you make to the Sudden Motion Sensor setting remain in effect even after you restart the computer. If you choose to disable the Sudden Motion Sensor, Apple recommends that you re-enable it as soon as possible in order to take full advantage of the feature.

To re-enable the Sudden Motion Sensor:

Find the current status of Sudden Motion Sensor:

From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
In the Utilities folder, open Terminal.
When the command line appears, type sudo pmset -g and press Return. Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return. If you have the Sudden Motion Sensor turned off, the value of the ams entry (in Mac OS X 10.3) or sms entry (in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5) will be a zero (0).
