John.B: Thanks for the reply. Ok, cool so Time Machine will def. work it's just not that fastest way correct? Thanks,

I just want to re-iterate this point. It's 12:04 AM and it's dead silent in my house. The only thing I can hear..well, is nothing! This drive in the 17" unibody is dead silent! I'm copying data from my old macbook over to this one and I can only hear this drive if I put my ear down on the computer. It's really fast and I have zero vibration.

Anyone reset their SMC for the MacBook after installing? I did it for shi** and giggles, and I noticed a boost in the battery life. Getting ~40 minutes extra battery life from what I am noticing, and that would be better than the stock drive.

AliensExist4, once you boot from the Leopard disk, go to Disk Utility from the menu and Format the new drive as Mac Extended (Journaled) and then Partition it as 1 (or more if you desire) partition and give it a name like Macintosh HD or whatever and hit the Options button to map it as GUID.
Now you are ready to install Leopard.

isaki87 I'm not sure how to do that. Anywhere you could link me too? Thanks,
You can either install your HD, and boot from your startup disks and select disk utility and format to Mac OS Extended.

In Disk Utility:
Select drive from the panel on the left> select erase> then below select the format(Mac OS Extended- Journaled) > name the drive> and hit erase.

Hope that helps, if you have any Q's just send me a PM.

Tiger Direct stiffed me on this drive. They stated it was in stock. so i ordered. i got a notice in my email that my credit card was charged the money. then 2 days later i get a email from tiger direct stating they were out of stock and it was backordered. wtf then why did you charge my credit card? yaknow?

they said they would put me on a priority list or something. losers have no way to get my money back online either. have to call them. im gonna wait a week and see what happens. if i dont get it im calling them and telling them to stick it up thier firewire port.

thats what i get for going somewhere other then newegg.

Yep. Same old Tiger Direct. Some things will never change.

Priority list? You gotta be shittin' me.

You can call your credit card company and dispute the charge. It's a hassle for Tiger Direct and the number of chargebacks they get determines how much of TD's credit card revenues get held in reserve by their credit card processor. Just saying...

thats what i get for going somewhere other then newegg.
And that's why some of us were trying to warn people about TD. I believe I went so far as to say I would wait and pay the extra $10 for a drive from NewEgg.

I wonder where are all the Tiger Direct fanbois are now? :p

Well, in all fairness I did get my drive from TD. It's the first time I used them, I'm a regular at Newegg.com myself. You must have just missed the stock they had, these drives go very fast from whomever has them. Good luck on getting your hands on one.

I didn't have any problems with my Tiger Direct order either. I ordered around 10PM on Tuesday, 2/10, and it was delivered on Friday, 2/13.

Ended up getting a great deal, since it was only $129.99 + $1.99 shipping - $6.50 cashback ordering through Microsoft Live Cashback = $125.48.

I temporarily put it in a Firewire enclosure and zeroed the drive to make sure there weren't any problems it, and it seems fine. My 17-inch MBP should be here on Monday.

I also had a perfectly fine purchase from Tiger Direct. I don't get the hate some have for Tiger Direct. Kind of stupid.

I am however disappointed with the hard drive. My MBP has a vibration with the thing installed, so I took it out and will use as a backup. I tried 4 different 7200 rpm drives, and they all cause a vibration. Not worth the increased speed to me at all.

Congrats on winning the TD lottery.

If they had (completely guessing here) four hundred hard drives to sell and charged (again, just a wag) five hundred credit cards, how would you feel if you were one of the unlucky 100 that had to practically get postal to get your card credited back for a drive that didn't ever ship (or didn't work as advertised).

You guys who think customer service is about when things go right, well, maybe you just haven't been "mugged" yet...

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else removed after upgrade because of vibrations? I sounds like one poster just doesn't like 7200 rpm drives, but I'm wondering if anyone else has an issue with this particular drive. Also, has anyone notices any issues with installing this dive, particularly I saw a review where someone mentioned the breather whole on this drive is in a different place than his original drive so he had to change routing of the connecting cable so as not to cover up the breather hole.

.....Curtis

I did. I have been waiting for this drive for months but I could not stand the vibration. I do PC repair for a living so I know what I am doing and I reseated the drive multiple times. It seams that either it is pure luck to get a drive that does not have this issue or everyone just has varied standards on what they consider acceptable. I sent my drive back to newegg and am waiting to see what they say about a replacement since they do not appear to have any in stock. I can not decide if I want to chance another 7200 RPM or just play it safe with a larger 5400.

There is a lottery in every purchase you make. That is why using a credit card as payment is insurance against any purchase, and the ability to dispute a charge. I used AmEx. That is the only customer service I need.

But this thread is about the hard drive, not who you purchase it from.

CBeckstrand,
You hit the nail on the head. "everyone just has varied standards on what they consider acceptable". As I posted above, I have tried 4 other 7200 rpm drives, and they all cause vibration in the palm rest of my MBP. There is also a whole thread here of others who sadly found out the same thing. I think sending it back for another shot will be a waste of time.

I've purchased from a lot of places that have poor customer service to get the best price vs. paying more from a place known for their good customer service. Like PeterKG, I always pay with a credit card. I know that I'll always be able to get my money back by requesting a chargeback if something goes wrong.

As far as Tiger Direct overselling the drives, it's very common for resellers to drop ship directly from a distributor, so it can be difficult for a reseller to know when inventory is depleted, especially for a new item that sells out quickly. I agree that requesting a credit card refund for an item that wasn't shipped shouldn't require pulling teeth, but refunds don't happen instantly. They really do take 2-3 days to post.

I highly suggest you stop buying 7200rpm drives whatsoever as I'm sure all of them vibrate to some extent given the fact that they spin and since they're in such close proximity to your palm/hand... I highly doubt you'll find that "perfect" drive. You should go out and buy a SSD instead since they don't vibrate at all..

I would not mind a SSD but my whole reason for upgrading is more space, not necessarily speed. I have no problems with the vibration on the stock drive so I will most likely end up replacing it with another 5400 RPM. Back on topic I still believe that there has to be difference in the vibration on these Seagate drives because there is no way anyone could claim that the could not feel any vibration with the drive I received. I am using a unibody Macbook so perhaps the MBP is less prone to vibration?

Don't really care much about this ongoing debate and definitely don't consider myself a Tiger Direct fanboy (especially since this was my first order), but I ordered last Thursday afternoon and it shipped that evening. It should be here Monday.

I currently have a 200/7200 Hitachi in my '06 MBP and don't get a bit of vibration or noise (and I'm very sensitive, because the fan drives me nuts when it gets going), so I'm hoping to have the same luck with this Seagate model.

That's a great point about varied standards. How about comparing the 7200 rpm drive to a stock FUJITSU 160GB HD that came in the MBP before the unibody.

Is the 7200 rpm drive louder or the same as this drive?
and
Does it use more, equal, or less power? (Less? I know how it sounds. I'm trying to research the threads and someone mentioned it uses less power because the drive is more efficient)

Thanks. I'm looking to put in order very soon for either the Seagate 500 5400 or 7200 rpm drive. Patience is hard to come when shopping for new goodies.
