Of note

"In the same email, Jobs identified issues for the executives overseeing Apple’s iOS mobile software. He said the company “needed to catch up to Android where we are behind.” He cited “notifications, tethering and speech” as three areas, while writing that Apple could leapfrog Android with features like Siri, Apple’s speech-recognizing digital assistant."

and "Apple is in danger of hanging on to old paradigm for too long (innovator’s dilemma)” and “Google and Microsoft are further along on the technology” to connect and synchronize contacts, calendars, photos, music, videos and bookmarks across all devices using online services."

What's interesting is this is right from Jobs' himself. Which goes against what some people seem to believe here...

What's the point in having long legal battles when it's very much apparent that Samsung blatantly copied Apple.

Unfortunately the overlap between "Blatantly copied Apple" and "Provably infringed Apple's patents, trademarks or copyrights" is not quite so simple to define.

Even harder is to work out how much Apple is legitimately out of pocket as a result of any infringement. Not nearly as much as Apple would like to think, I suspect. Although early Galaxy phones and tablets, their packaging and marketing were pretty clearly inspired by iDevices, its the last couple of years when Samsung have started bringing new ideas to the table (phablets, stylus input etc.) that they've been hurting Apple, and the current phones don't look much like current iPhones.

Really, it would be best for the world if the Judge sent both Apple and Samsung back to their bedrooms an had a word with their mummies about giving them too many sweets and sugary drinks.

Tie products together to keep customers in our ecosystem? If a company can't keep customers in through innovation and value proposition, let's tie them into our products. Bad business and not the Apple I know.

I think if we could migrate iTunes and other purchases easily to another device Apple base wound drop considerably - then again I think other OS do this too.

It is very easy to migrate content from iTunes. Apps are not replaceable, but iTunes content is easy.

"Tie all of our products together, so we further lock customers into our ecosystem":eek:

Is no one disturbed by that??

If you couldn't see that was the strategy when they released the iPad, then shame on you. A normal user with a Mac computer thinks they should get a phone so it works in conjunction and on the go. Then they think, I should get an Apple TV to watch the content which I buy on my computer. Then they think, hmmm, I should get an iPad so I can do all of this on the go...WITH A BIGGER SCREEN! Should I even mention the various accessories which only apply to these apple devices?

There's a reason the apple ecosystem is called an ecosystem. It all works, and it all works just the way Jobs and Apple intended.

Tying those products make for a better experience = better products.

These leaked emails are great, it's a surprise to many how worried Apple is about its lack of innovation lately.

No. What company doesn't want to lock customers into their ecosystem? You think Google, Microsoft, Amazon, FB etc. think any differently?

Think refrigerators, automobiles, lawn mowers, grills, game consoles, or really any other industry....they all do this. "Be sure to use genuine HP ink" "Be sure to use genuine Motocraft Parts"

Surprising not at all. For some reason people expect tech products to be different.

I'm not disturbed by that at all. There are alternatives for people who don't want to be locked into the Apple ecosystem.

Apple's crusade is to make the best products and not ever be stuck in the same frame of mind and allow others to make advances with more advanced thought processes and over take you. And a crusade is also a holy war, so that comparison is a far one.

Year after year you have to fire up the employees to make the best products. And I think this is a good way to do so.

This is not Apple scared of a possible lack of innovation within itself. I believe this is Apple realising that the competition has stumbled onto some great tech advances but don't have the processes and strategies to capitalise on them. Apple realise it's only a matter of time before Google/MS/etc etc do capitalise on their tech. And when they do, Apple need to be one step ahead.

This is essence is a push to keep complacency away and not a lack of innovation at Apple.

Samsung's ads edgy? Please. I don't need to be told what "the next big thing" is; I can decide that for myself.

Saw this yesterday and thought it was funny!

I don't understand, what is so good about Samsung's phones? How come other companies like LG, Sony & HTC use andriod but are not as successful as Samsung? Really don't understand!

Your quote is a perfect example why some are disturbed by Apple wanting to lock customers into their ecosystem. RDF. Apple may not employ it as much these days, but certain fans of Apple employ it all the time. Your quote shows how it's employed, albeit in a subtle way.

You read the same thing we all did. Yet you re-mixed it to suit your narrative of Apple the Great. None of what you said can be gleaned from what you read. It sounds good. It feels inspirational. It's still RDF. When Jobs lays it out in black and white, it pretty cut and dried. Apple is a business. The operate that business very, very well. They operate that business successfully. From that perspective, they are to be admired; just like a lot of other companies (Google, Microsoft, Samsung, etc). That's where it ends for me.

I fear this trial will reveal some things diehard fans don't want to know. It will reveal Apple is more like their competitors. They are all businesses and not towers of Good and Evil.

And by alternatives you mean? Piracy? Or do you have a better suggestion for all those movies I have in iTunes that I want to be able to watch in my Android table?

Guys... if you start looking at this exchanges deeply enough, you will probably realize that at the end Apple is not better than anybody else, or worse for that matter, but they end up getting free passes from us all the time. I need to wake up.

Samsung's marketing. All smartphones are basically the same. They perform the same basic functions: calls, email, web, and apps. So what makes one better than the other? On an individual level it's perception. How do companies form perceptions? Marketing. Samsung's marketing destroyed it's Android competition. LG, Sony, and poor HTC each got varying degrees of love from the tech press while Samsung was generally regarded as gimmicky and plasticky by that same press. Did they care? Nope. They marketed the heck out of their product to the buying public. Images in every home, every day.

"Google and Microsoft are further along on the technology, but haven't quite figured it out yet."

So, Steve Jobs sent an email to Apple employes that says Apple Technology is inferior to Google and Microsoft technology?

This is textbook Steve Jobs, guys. He was the master of pushing his own people as far as they could go. Apple were and are at the top of their game, but behind they scenes they act is if they are week away from bankruptcy. This is classic Steve pushing his employees buttons to motivate them. Any other company doing this well would be sitting back in the easy chair. It sounds like I'm defending Apple, but I am not. Steve was kind of an *******, but you can't say he wasn't a good leader/motivator/innovator.
