Apple is planning to release the second-generation AirPods Pro this fall, rumored to feature a new design, improved audio quality, and some possible health integration, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

As Gurman writes in his latest Power On newsletter:
Look out for new AirPods Pro in the fall. The current model has been on the market since fall of 2019, so the batteries are already probably in trouble for some early adopters. Also look out for an AirPods Max refresh with new colors (and, we hope, a price drop—$550 is absurd for those headphones).
The AirPods Pro have not been refreshed since their launch in 2019, and multiple rumors have suggested a launch this year. Gurman's claim of a fall launch lines up with information previously shared by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said a launch would occur in the second half of the year. The new AirPods Pro could feature a more compact design that sees away with the stem, coupled with a new charging case and lossless audio support over a new protocol.

As for the AirPods Max, Apple is not expected to be working on a second-generation model of the over-ear headphones that launched in December 2020. Instead, Apple is thought to be working on new color options. Today, Gurman said that the new colors are still being worked on but stopped short of offering a timeline for when they could launch.

I am ready for the new pros, my gen 1 Airpods die after about an hour. I used them multiple times a day every day for a while so I have been very impressed by their lifespan. I hope the pros can compete in longevity terms. While I do hope for color options, if they're stemless I don't think it'll be a huge loss if they're just white and barely noticeable in the ears.

Ready to replace my APP's with better fitting tips, lossless sound, better Spatial Audio & Dolby Atmos performance.

Hoping for shorter stems.

New AirPod Max colors? I sure hope they come in USB C.
They’ve got some catching up to do. I brought some Pixel Buds Series A this last week and they are the most comfortable TWS buds I’ve ever used. They sound great, barely feel like they are in your ears and crucially don’t have any dorky storks popping out the ends.
Storks are dorky?

I like the stems.
Agreed. To me, they do three things that stemless earbuds suffer from.
1. Their iconic design means they don't look like hearing aids.
2. They make inserting and removing the earbud more comfortable.
3. They offset forces associated with gestures so that it doesn't feel like you are trying to operate a hotel elevator while intoxicated.

I really don't want Apple to remove the stems since they allow AirPods Pro to be adjusted effortlessly on the go. Plus pausing and resuming playback is so effortless that I cannot think how Apple could make it easier with a stemless design. All Apple needs to do is to make the bass better and deeper, improve ANC a bit and maybe just give us a new colour design. Keep the design as it is - Don't invent the wheel when you have already created something so close to being perfect.

I think I saw a review of a recent set of earbuds that function by tapping the side of your face (right near the ear) - could have been Sony's - and it worked quite well according to the reviewers.

I can see Apple introducing something like that in place of the stems...

I’m on the exact same boat as you, AirPods gen 1, had it for 3 years.. lately noticing battery drain (maybe battery damaged due to being in my car in hot & cold conditions), used to last me 1 hour & 30 mins to 2 hours of gym (loud music). Now it’s like 20-40mins. I’m very happy with it and I want to see what it is like with pro 2 gen, very excited and massive upgrade

Max with LDAC-like codec to stream hi-fi music…or at least have usb-c…. otherwise why have lossless option?
The problem of codecs is that one can improve the efficiency as much as they want, but the bitrate that remains.

I thought they could use the UWB to convey more data, but that doesn't seem the case.

I don’t like the fact that those buds are disposable. As the battery life span runs out, they end up in the ?.
Yep, and I recently was reminded that so are iPads. Trying to get Apple even to "replace" the battery in an original iPad Pro, whose battery was only lasting a couple hours, resulted in an in-the-box-still replacement iPad Pro after three visits to the Apple Store and much vocal complaining on my part. Even the Geniuses there said they sure wish Apple would design the iPad with an easily replaceable battery. It is a major shortcoming, and not "green" at all, that iPads that could last decades are probably ending up in landfills because the damn thing is glued and pressed together. Apple can do better than this.
