I think the analyst reasoning is incorrect. BOM cost is dropping due to the amortization of FaceID and OLED R&D costs, and economies of scale. The 2018 X will be very similar to this year’s model but with A12.
exactly - Apple is really hard core with margins especially with the iPhone - they could have easily afforded to come down 20-30% margin from their regular 40% and still make a killin

Probably just reduced the performance with the same form factor. Smaller battery, lower speed processor, etc. It looks the same so the masses will buy it.

Makes sense, considering that's what they have always done with their flagship products. There are definitely some ignorant people out there, clearly.

"satisfactory terms" = we let you use our tech in the S9

all I want is a sub-5" OLED borderless phone, I can't be the only one that wants a smaller flagship not a bigger one.

Consumers are getting smarter. Apple need two tiers, $200 iPhone SE2 and $500 iPhone 8S both with smaller bezels and without notch. They can also keep iPhone Xcessive for the few that need to compensate by spending more.

For people who are struggling for $200, they probably shouldn't be spending $799 on a phone. If they can't afford it, they don't buy. No big deal.
Yeah, I can afford it but I won't pay it $1000 US for a non-Plus phone. Not worth the extra $100-200. Sorry Apple. And from the reported sales, it's pretty clear that a lot of people agree.

"Sales of the iPhone X have fallen way below Apple’s expectations, with reports suggesting orders of the flagship device are around 30 million under than original estimates."

If the next non-Plus OLED iPhone flagship is still US$$999, I'll pass on it. LCD is fine. I'd buy a $799 6.1" LCD iPhone as long as the camera is decent. That's the one thing I'm worried out. I don't know if I'd want to go back to a single-lens camera on my iPhone. I'd even consider hanging onto my 7 Plus a little longer, if necessary. My original plan for 2018 was to pass on the 7 Plus to my wife and get myself a new phone, but if the pricing remains out of whack and the LCD model gets only a single-lens camera, I might just keep the 7 Plus and buy her a price-reduced iPhone 8 or something if it still exists.

BTW, I couldn't care less about 3D Touch, and in fact I wish Apple would just kill off this "feature" which is pretty much useless. Oh, and get rid of that stupid screen notch already.

Expected this, similar to when the MacBook Air came out. As manufacturing costs go down, prices will also. I expect $799 for LCD X style, $899 for 5.8, and $999 for 6.5. All starting at 64GB.
Yep, that is the pricing I was expecting for the 2018 lineup as well, with the original X discontinued and the 8 series (and probably 7 series too) sticking around at a discount from current prices.

£269! Have you considered the trashy components that this thing will have that will end up in landfills next year? What brand is that? How does it treat its workers/suppliers? What is its environmental impact? It's a bit insulting comparing gutter rubbish like that to an iPhone X which has selected quality components. Chances are, the iPhone X will still be working well in four years time.

Please don't compare trash with a quality product. It's like saying 'Why buy that sexy red Ferrari when my beige Ford Focus is just as sexy!'
Once you've one the X, you'll realise its quality. People need to stop thinking that these are 'phones' and realise that they are small MacBooks/iPads. Yes the X is expensive, but for me I didn't need to buy a camera, video camera, music player, sat nav, video player etc.

Sorry not to mention the manufacturer. That’ll be the “trashy” Huawei brand then. The second biggest phone manufacturer in the world. And now outselling Apple. Silly me thinking they were decent quality.

Please stop with the Android compare. Compare that with the $950 Note. Why should ANDROID owners pay a premium for a phone that runs Android and costs 3X as much?

Apple users pay more because of iOS, support, fashion, etc.

Please stop comparing iOS to Android like they are the same. No one wants Android when they use iOS. It's better to ask Android users why they buy flagship Android phones.

You made my argument for me in the second paragraph. But I agree with your point in the last one.

iOS is a HUGE differentiation for iOS users. I can't switch to Android because I hate using it.

I use iOS and MacOS too, and I also use Android devices. I want and prefer Android because I think it's better, more open, more versatile, and less closed off. I know that doesn't mean anything to you, but there you go.

The idea that paying more for iOS makes it better is out of date. It's not 2008 any more.

In Canada, the 64 GB iPhone X is CAD$1319. It'd have to be CAD$1199 or less for me to even consider it. $1099 would be even better.

In contrast, the iPhone 8 is CAD$929, and the 64 GB iPhone 8 Plus is CAD$1059.

I'm hoping for a 64 GB iPhone Xs at CAD$1159, and a 64 GB iPhone Xs Plus at CAD$1299.
However, I'm expecting something more like $1199 to $1219 and $1349 to $1369 respectively.

It's not out of date. I still don't like Android as much. iOS is most definitely a big differentiator for me. The difference is not as much as it was before, but it's still important.

That's fine. Apple released multiple iPhone's in 2017 knowing full well the X wouldn't sell a ton based on the $999 price tag. This still resulted in their highest grossing quarter ever. Ultimately it doesn't matter to me as I still like my X and the stock price is doing just fine. I think the base X model this year will start at $899 and the Plus model this year will start at $999, for 64GB. Is a $100 difference still a no buy for you? The 7 plus was an awesome phone, nothing wrong with holding on to what works. Nothing wrong with any of your choices, or mine.

It must hurt that the X is probably going to be the highest selling model of smartphone for the year it’s out.

Cheaper highly doubt it but if they gonna cut the price it would probably start at $899
For many, that won’t be good enough. People have become used to paying less for the flagship model (bet. 600 and 700). So that’s where the “close enough” iPhone 9 comes into the picture, I guess at $699. I know a neighbor who still uses an iPhone 6 and I have a feeling that she’ll get the 6.1” iPhone (9), mainly because of the lower price and no more ‘$200-300 iPhone’ purchasing option from Verizon, her carrier of choice.

The articles also state that their quarterly unit volumes have decreased vs. 2016 and 2015, and they've had to cancel OLED orders because demand has been low, with estimates saying that iPhone X sales have been tens of millions of units below expected.

I think most of us expected a price cut in 2018, but this may affect how much that price cut will be. A price cut of US$100 on the 5.8" OLED model is a reasonable estimate IMO.

I think $899 is good enough as a starting point for the entry level OLED model, in terms of effect on sales volumes, revenues, and profit.

I love my near perfect iPhone X. It is worth every penny and perhaps more. I bought two this year (one for my son) and will buy two more newest models in 2018 for wife and other son. The phone is priced right, but if Apple lowers it, fine. I likely will not be upgrading my iPhone X, however, since I can’t imagine improving on perfection. Well, that is not quite true. I would upgrade, even pay more, for a lighter and thinner iPhone X.

I will be upgrading from my iPad Pro 10.5 inch if the new model has Face ID. Anything that does not have Face ID just seems old and clunky. Using TouchID has become somewhat irritating, it is like living in the past. It’s really nice not having to type passwords or put a finger on a button to open secured apps, etc.

Okay? Not sure why I or anyone else would care if they haven't sold as many as expected. The X is the best phone they've made, they had a record quarter, and the stock is doing great. I am good.

The pricing of the X moved it from 'yeah, i'll just get the newest phone' to 'Do I really need this phone?'

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've gotten the newest iphone every 2 years but thought twice about the X this year because of the price and decided to hold onto it.

I still haven't gotten my battery replaced yet, I'm really looking forward to doing it soon though. I'll probably get a new phone this fall (mainly for a better camera), but the 6S has continued to go strong.
