Yes, it will replace USB-A, not Lightning!

I think this will be the case, a USB-C to Lighting cable
It makes perfectly sense, as Macbooks have USB-C and you can't connect an iPhone without an adapter. People that simply charge the phone by plugging it into the wall won't notice the difference, they'll have a plug with USB-C instead of USB-A so not a big deal and old cables will continue to work.

Hopefully USB-C on the phone next year. It's so idiotic that Apple is still using lightening. So many people can charge all their devices with the same charger/chord... except their iPhone.

Hopefully it’s wrong again this year and the reason for the usb c charger is because the phone also has usb c

The concept firstly. Where with Lightning the port is female so no potential board to break like the male port of USB C. In other words inserting a tip is better than receiving an open hole.

Lightning never loosens over time, whereas from all reports that's not the case with USB-C. Then there's the million different industry standards for USB-C, so it's not completely universal.

But when will Apple ditch the lightning connector and go to USB-C on the business end of the cable? I don't see this as much of anything, and it's annoying that Apple won't play with others in the sandbox. It's more proof they don't care about their customers and they just want to make another buck on cables. They went all-in on USB-C back in 2016, and they still refuse to use it on the iPhone/iPad. But the MacBooks all have it now?? Absolute madness and complete nonsense.

One of their biggest annoyances is the sacrifice of convenience for profit.

I don’t see any benefit for usb-c to on the iPhone to me. I dont care if Apple is making a buck off my back I have a desk full of lightning cables and chargers, and just do t see how usb-c on the business end is going to improve my digital life.

I have both Android and iPhone (for work). Although I don't like my Android phone much, I find the USB-C cable is more dependable in staying "locked in". I also notice the cables last longer since the contacts are in the inside of the connector, I've never replaced a USB-C cable, but I've replaced dozens of lightning cables. I've never heard of or seen a "board" break, but I can see your point there - I've thought the same thing. Unfortunately it's the standard now, and Apple got behind it on their Macs, so they need to follow through.

Which charger though? Isn't that the MacBook charger you got? If so, that would be much more capacity than a charger they would ship with an iPhone.

What is the max wattage an XR can draw?

18w is the most any iPhone 8/X/XS/XR can draw, so pretty much any USB-C charger is great.

I’m assuming the iPhone 11 will also be limited to 18w draw, but we’ll see soon!

Bleh... looking forward to the move, but still disappointed that these iphones are likely to have a lightning port. Hopefully the 2020 version will have a usb c port :p Id love the commonality of simply having one cable to carry around and being able to charge my macbook, ipad and iphone without the need for adapters that get lost over time.

Wireless charging is so common place now that I hardly see a reason for the iPhone to have a port at all. I actually cannot remember the last time I plugged my phone in.

So when do the USB-D ports start showing up? Or I guess they could be Microsoftian and skip the D and go to USB-E.

Hold on...the “charger” will have a USB-C port it says. Meaning the actual phone won’t? So what it actually suggests is they’ll just bundle a type C-to-lightning cable, saving a USB-C charging port “feature” for 2020 iPhone for when us, the mortal consumers are “properly ready”

For an iPhone it’s still sloooooow....

Yeah, but they sold the old Macbook Air until last year, and came out with the USB-C charger about the same time.

Still makes absolutely no sense that, for the last three years, you could buy the latest Apple Laptop and latest iPhone and need an adapter or an additional cable to plug one into the other.

Yall I can make a Chinese text messages and say any rumour I want too and screenshot them, would you then go crazy again?

This happens every. single. year.

it would be a perfect solution for this year !
No reasons to ditch Lightning port entirely, but it's about time to support USB-C also for the iPhone.

iPhone already supported this...it has for a while. This is nothing new, just Apple are giving it to you in the box rather than you having to pay for it.

The only thing new would be if the iPhone had a new controller in the device to make lightning actually have modern day specs (i.e. fast transfer speed), even the ipad pro controller at this point would be nice.

Or better yet - drop it entirely and move to usb-c already.

Then there's the million different industry standards for USB-C, so it's not completely universal.

This is the issue I'm concerned about. I use a Google Pixel, and it's difficult to find a cable that is compatible with quick charge. You have to read all of the specifications on the box, otherwise, you got a cable that will charge the phone in 3 hours.
