If the previous rumor about the increased battery capacity is true, they better include something that charges faster than 5W. Charging speed is table stakes in 2019 when not much else differentiates hardware from the competition.

Still makes absolutely no sense that, for the last three years, you could buy the latest Apple Laptop and latest iPhone and need an adapter or an additional cable to plug one into the other.

I assume most iPhone buyers had a PC where USB-A was more common. But yeah they could've included adapters.

This is the issue I'm concerned about. I use a Google Pixel, and it's difficult to find a cable that is compatible with quick charge. You have to read all of the specifications on the box, otherwise, you got a cable that will charge the phone in 3 hours.

That's a Google problem. All USB-C cables are required to support up to 3 A power at any PD voltage, which means up to 60 W. Special cables are required for 5 A charging, which is the range from 60-100 W.

I've never had any problem with 60 W Mac laptop power on any cable.

This is a big deal, since reviewers test charging time using the charger than comes with the iPhone - which is incredibly slow using the old 5W USB-A charger or 7.5W wireless charging.

Apple added in 18W USB-C PD fast charging to the iPhone 8, so it’s been supported for a couple years now. You just need the $19 USB-C to Lightning cable and a suitable USB-C port to charge from.

I think it’s a good time to switch from including a USB-A Lightning cable to a USB-C Lightning cable. If people really want the slow old USB-A Lightning cable they can pick one up just about anywhere for a few bucks.

I was really hoping the 2019 phones would do away with lightning altogether and just get on with USB-C already. We know it's coming; sure would be nice to carry one type of cable for a while.

I'm glad you brought up the wireless charging thing since I forgot about that. Hopefully they are able to move up to 10W this year—especially since it doesn't seem like they're upgrading much this time.

But when will Apple ditch the lightning connector and go to USB-C on the business end of the cable? I don't see this as much of anything, and it's annoying that Apple won't play with others in the sandbox. It's more proof they don't care about their customers and they just want to make another buck on cables. They went all-in on USB-C back in 2016, and they still refuse to use it on the iPhone/iPad. But the MacBooks all have it now?? Absolute madness and complete nonsense.

One of their biggest annoyances is the sacrifice of convenience for profit.

The concept firstly. Where with Lightning the port is female so no potential board to break like the male port of USB C. In other words inserting a tip is better than receiving an open hole.

Lightning never loosens over time, whereas from all reports that's not the case with USB-C. Then there's the million different industry standards for USB-C, so it's not completely universal.

Apple should remove usb-c ports on MacBook and goes back to proprietary connectors. The same problem you mentioned is also applicable to MacBook.

It took them forever to add USB 3 ports to their Macbook only to take them away.

That's because Intel took forever adding USB 3 support to their PCH (Chipset). Better to have Intel's blessing of official support in there than to add an extra third-party chip, which costs additional money, board space, possible future incompatibilities and increased design and engineering support time.

There was a time that USB 3 was an absolute s***show before official support came in the form of Ivy Bridge.

Apple didn't take anything away...USB-C is as faster or faster than USB 3.0, depending on the device. Even device manufacturers are moving some devices to a USB-C connector when the underlying speeds are still at USB 2.0. Products evolve, so do ports and interfaces.

It AMAZES me that in 2019 people are still crying about cables. Who's not using wireless charging? Why? My car even has a wireless charger for crying out loud. I couldn't even tell you the last time I physically connected my phone to my Mac. The day they completely remove the Charging/Data port from phones people's heads are going to explode. That day is sooner than you think. You can even get a small wireless charger to carry around for travel! I'll never understand peoples instance on marching backward.

No brainer.
The better rumor would be, USB C - USB C, i.e. no more lightning.

A fast charger should be standard.
Every other smartphone manufacturer with a phone that supports fast charging includes a power adapter and charger to do fast charging.

It's an insult that I bought an iPad Pro and then had to buy a USB-C PD charger and a new cable.
No excuse for this.

Because wireless/inductive charging in just plain slow.
I can't imagine trying to charge an iPad with a wireless charger.
I have a OnePlus 7 Pro and the fast charge on the phone makes makes me thing how I ever put up with wireless on other phones. Give me fast charging any old day.

People who don't want to charge slow as Christmas are not using wireless charging.

Just because your car has wireless charging doesn't mean everyone else's does. Congrats on your personal preferences, and glad it works out for you, but you're still in the minority.

At first I got so excited at this headline because I thought it was referring to this year's phones being USB C, then I re-read it and saw that the real story is just about Apple finally doing something they should've done beginning at least last year, if not the year before

Read this quickly and got excited, as I thought this meant the iPhone was adopting USB-C instead of Lightning. Hoping this happens next year as the rumors seem to not indicate this changing in 2019.

This is still a step in the right direction from 2018 iPhones.

Not sure what wireless charger you're using but mine works pretty quickly. Good luck when they ditch the port tho.

USB-C to USB-C. USB-C to Lightning. USB-A to Lightning. All in the iconic Apple White, nearly indistinguishable from one another in your cable bag.

When will the madness end?
USB-A to USB mini, USB-A to USB micro, USB-A to USB3 micro, USB-A to USB-C, all in the same iconic black everybody else uses, nearly indistinguishable from another in my cable drawer.

This would make sense seeing as how Apple already sells the USB-C to Lightning cable in-store. They have now for the past 2+ years, and in the past year or so, the price was finally driven down to $19 USD, matching the price of the current USB-A to Lightning cables. Considering that many users have also upgraded their Macs in the past few years, using this cable concurrently with their Mac would be a non-issue (insert dongle joke here).

iPhone already supported this...it has for a while. This is nothing new, just Apple are giving it to you in the box rather than you having to pay for it.

The only thing new would be if the iPhone had a new controller in the device to make lightning actually have modern day specs (i.e. fast transfer speed), even the ipad pro controller at this point would be nice.

Or better yet - drop it entirely and move to usb-c already.
I know it supports that, but this time will be out of the box. Cute.

Nothing wrong with the cables if you treat them correctly.I've never had one break on me in 9 years of using them.I am still using a Lightning cable that came with my iPhone 5 in 2012.Most of the problems with the cables are down to the users misuse, like pulling them by the cord to unplug them from the phone rather than the plug at the end.

This kind of "you are holding it wrong" apologist nonsense is exactly why Apple products have fallen from grace. From the iPhone 4, to bad cables, to keyboards. If most consumers do something a certain way, design the product to work that way. Thats why I have an Anker cable that is 4 years old that still works and not a single Apple branded cable.

yawn, this rumor has been rehashed every year . it will be rumored next year and the year after until apple eventually adds usbc, Then these clowns will proclaim "TOLD YA SOOOO"

Early Anker cables didn't follow spec, and some were actually fire hazards.

It's probably not a good idea to use Anker as an example of quality here. ;)

Please just move everything to USB-C in the interest of standardization. This transition has now gone for too long.
