Does the numbering scheme indicate they expect to post more than 99 such updates during 2005? :p

Well given that it was 2005-001 they have left themselves open for up to 998 more before the end of the year  . Hopefully, that's just playing it safe.

I'm not so sure about the numbering thing. "2005-001" sounds nice at first, but where will Apple go from there?

Speculation: a "2005-002" security update would be SO cool :) It's just like -001... plus one! Elegant. Are you listening Apple?

You guys crack me up......

Mac users have to be only computer users in the world who get so charged by freakin' security updates!! :)

Microsoft comes out with a security update, and they suck. However, when Apple comes out with one it's "I feel safer already." and "I can't wait 'til I get home to download it" and "wow look at the new 'elegant' numbering scheme Apple has come up with...they're geniuses".

Please don't flame me for this....I'm a Mac lover, too. It's just that sometimes the "Apple Can Do No Wrong" mantra around here gets me laughing.

:)

Interesting numbering scheme-- if Microsoft did the same think they'd in in the 70s by May.... :D :D

Actually, they'd be to 5 by May. They changed to releasing monthly security updates over a year ago. The reason of course was the bad press they were getting for releasing security updates every other day.

:)

Like they really care. Unless they charged $5 for each update or somthing. lol. That would be brilliant marketing btw...
Actually, no that wouldn't be brilliant marketing by any stretch of the imagination.

I hope I'm not flaming here...

I think they were joking. Or at least I hope they were joking...

safari small problem..

there is one small change that is kinda bugging me already: within pulldown bookmarks, i can not longer start typing and get the link that starts with what i typed. (does that make sense?)

anyways, its not a big thing. is it just me or does anybody else notice it?

From Apple

"Component: Safari
Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.7, Mac OS X Server v10.3.7, Mac OS X v10.2.8, Mac OS X Server v10.2.8
CVE-ID: CAN-2004-1314
Impact: When Safari's "Block Pop-Up Windows" feature is not enabled, a malicious pop-up window could appear as being from a trusted site
Description: If the "Block Pop-Up Windows" feature is enabled, then this issue does not occur. If the "Block Pop-Up Windows" feature is not enabled, a user can be mislead about the content of a Pop-up window if they used an untrusted link to navigate to a site they wanted to view. This update corrects the issue regardless of the "Block Pop-Up Windows" setting. Credit to Secunia Research for reporting this issue."

Good Deal!

well sorry for not being a supergenius... give me a break..

Im just saying that it would make a good idea for pc users to buy "saftey and reliability upgrades", because they need them so much. And they wouldn't recognize how much they are spending because it is in such small installments.

AFAIK no security updates from Apple have opened up the OS and computer to other problems.

Also, Apple tend to react to security issues before they become wide spread or known to the community at large. So we just feel good about it. M$ on the other hand seems to have issues that are truly exploited, or so we are lead to believe.

Mail App faster

I noticed some people complaining about the slow down in mail after 10.3.7 which I also notice. Just opened mail and seems the security update has fixed the lag.

Cool

OMG!!111!! Teh OS is soooz much F4ST3R N0W!!111!!!!

(optional reading for troll/newbie) im g0inG to usethis on my D3LL \/\/hen I g3ts h0m3!

I felt like it was needed... considering the:
  • New Numbering System
  • Amount of people impressed with the new Numbering System
  • Number of people attempting to apply Apple's teqniques to Microsoft in regards to Numbering Systems
  • Number of people who usually post messages like this after any sort of update comes flying through the Software Update tubes.

:)

strange beep?

The only strange thing that happened to me was after logging in and before the finder started I heard a pure tone eminate from my laptop for about 2 seconds. It didn't seem to come from the speakers but from under the keyboard (I have a powerbook 550 so no speaker under the keyboard) It almost sounded like a POST test on a PC but that can't be right.

Everything else is fine....

Windows Security Numbering System

The biggest problem that I see with Microsoft using this type of numbering system is that sometime in June they would start having buffer overflow errors when trying to display the number. :D

Since when has System Preferences had a "hardware" icon located under other? On my Powerbook 550, It seems to let you select L2 cache size and some sort of power control called 'nap.' What does your machine show?

I think this is part of the optional Developer tools.

Great, thanks. I just installed the Dev Tools last week and the only reason to go to system prefs was for the update. I thought it was new, just not security update new.

I like the new numbering scheme - it will be very easy to keep track of these from now on (not that it was really that hard before...)

Installing now - my Mac is safe once again! ;)

I'd update except that it would make me restart which would reset my goal of keeping my computer on for the entire quarter. Up ~23 days so far. :D

Still works here.

It may have been a fan, the big fan in my MDD fired up during the restart after install, this did happen once before during an update, then again it is 38C - (100F) here today.

I don't feel more secure with these security updates, it makes me just wonder how many more their will be. Before any security updates I assumed that there were no holes. The more updates the more holes I realized were there and it makes me wonder if there have been this many how many more are there? Not saying I am not more secure but it does make me think about it.

There will ALWAYS be security holes, no software is perfect. The key is catching those holes before a malicious user does, and Apple has been doing a good job at this. ;)
