My guess is that we won't see more than seven updates this year with this new naming scheme. It's obvious that after 2005-001, apple will only be able to release
2005-010
2005-011
2005-100
2005-101
2005-110
2005-111

before running out of digits!

Yeah, there are 10 kind of people, those who know binary and those who don't :p ...

or... there are 3 kind of people, those who can count and those who can't

back to topic:

I do see an improvement in Safari. snappier.

No problems for me.

Microsoft would still be at 2005-000. They dont release security updates for their huge holes, they just let them sit and tell the poor users "too bad" :D

The standard people are comparing is nothing to do with demanding "no updates" from MS, nor being "thrilled" with Apple patches. It has EVERYTHING to do with the WELL-established pattern of Microsoft software and security flaws, and with the Mac OS's superior design in that regard.

You don't really think MS meets the same standard Apple does for OS security, do you? If they do, maybe we ARE too hard on them :D

How important is antivirus on mac's heard that many users don't have but is it anyuse since Virex is given with .mac or is that just to prevent transfering to your PC freinds
Exactly. That's what it prevents. And transferring to PCs isn't likely anyway: a PC virus can't spread on or from a Mac, so for there to be a risk, you'd have to intentionally forward an unknown email to your PC friend.

One day there WILL be a real Mac virus... maybe even 2 or 3... but I plan on waiting until then to get antivirus software, since I'd need to get the latest virus definitions anyway! Either way, it's protection just after the fact.

And you just happen to be one more to add to it all. :)

Well then, what kind of security patch thread would it be if every single mac user didn't post?

:) :D
I've played that little trick on a few people.... they didn't get it.... just thought I was the third person who couldn't count. Oh, well.
Maybe they managed to free up some code dealing with security, thus Safari is faster?

[Answer: A sucky thread!]

Security updates are good, Apple hard at work for us. The new numbering system is very interesting.

Possible reasons for new system???

It may have been said already, but I'll say it again (because I dont' feel like going through all the posts...)

I personally think that they switched to the new system because it'd be easier to count the total number of security updates and then compare it to other "name-brand" operating systems...

It's easier to compare update number 10 to...oh...lets pick a random example... let's say... MS04-045. Purely random example... of course... I just randomly typed numbers and letters on my keyboard...
:p

Oh wait... those would typically just be "announcements."

NUMB3RS

Numbering is a swell isea, although if there are too many it will become pretty obvious.
Somehow Security update 132 sounds worse than Security Update 09/23/05.

Installed it and no probs so far..

Im using the MX900 and I didn't notice any difference

Installed the update, restarted and...

... nothing but a blue screen....

... that lasted 10 minutes...

... and then I ctrl-command-powerSwitch...

... and it rebooted nicely.

Only that selecting Restart from the Apple menu brings back the blue screen.

hmm...i just installed it on my 733mhz "digital audio" with 10.3.7 and i don't noticed a damn bit of difference, lol

This security update apparently kills midi services for Logic Pro 7 and Logic Platinum 6.3. For Pro 7, reinstalling the combo 10.3.7 update seems to fix the problem. For Platinum 6.3, which I use, Logic now crashes every time at startup, even after reinstalling the combo update and repairing permissions, rebooting, etc. Digital Performer 4.52 doesn't seem to be affected, it seems to be only Logic right now. If you use pro audio apps I would wait on installing this one for now...
I didn't and now I am sorry. :(

I have one and am not having those problems after the update. However, I have had that happen a couple of times before. It has either been due to heavy Wi-Fi interference (like transferring a large file over wireless) or low batteries.

hmmm....

It's good to know that the general consensus is that when apple puts out a security update (or lots of security updates) it is a good thing, and we are all glad that apple is keeping up with it, but if M$ puts out too many updates they are idiots.

Strange that everybody wants to hold M$ to the standard of putting out software that requires no updates, but apparently we are thrilled when apple puts out software that needs updates.

That's just the way it is. Jobs could take the stage for a keynote and pinch a loaf on stage and announce the immediate availability of iPoop. The consensus here would be:

That's awesome, I'm buying two today.
Dell sells poop for hundreds less. What a rip off.
I can't believe they released iPoop before ProPoop.
I'm waiting for Rev. B, I heard it will be anodized aluminum with 5 colors.
Big deal, Microsoft already announced LongPoop available in 2006. Apple copied them again.

Have I covered us all?

Good form rdowns. Great post.

iPoop doesn't come with enough ram and damnit.. still no scroll button!

I can't understand why this thread has an equal positive to negative rating. My pb is at Apple Care, I wonder if when it comes back it'll have the security update installed.

Does anyone know if this update will mess up my PHP5 installation which is a part of my webserverxkit?

If your PHP installation is not over top of the system PHP installation, but instead resides in a separate directory for this purpose (example: /usr/local/php/), it will be unaffected by the security update. If you overwrote the system PHP install, you'll lose it when the security update is installed.

I can see the 2006 newspaper headline now... "LongPoop came short and TigerPoop was too 'long' ago to be remembered but shouldn't be forgotten." I.e. Tiger release at least one year before Shorthorn. We all know that the "Tiger" will murder the "Longhorn" cattle. ;)

Why do security updates always seem to cause system problems?

It seems like every time I read a security thread at least one person has a problem. :(

Can't Apple do at least a little more testing before the security updates are released?

and 'iPoop Minis are too small for my personal use'
