MacDailyNews still has Pop-unders, DRAT!

Bastards still have the pop-unders and the fix does not work there. I won't go back, screw them....

It is not apple's fault. all browsers now have this problem. People ( i.e., advertisers) have found a way around the pop up blockers.

PLEASE, DO RESEARCH BEFORE BLAMING APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, I do not think Apple realeased this to stop pop ups. However, on another note, there is someone over at Mac Fix it that's reporting an issue with multiple screens after the new Security update, too early to tell if there's a problem or not, just one report so far.

Ya, let steve and apple take all your hard earned money on a quarterly ipod and hardware updates.

Try to take back a purchase back to the apple store and see if they are on your side, sucker.

Oh stop it. And, I have taken things back to the Apple Store, including a flaky iPod Mini and they gave me a new one.
Sucka'

I think SaigonTiger was talking about MacDailyNews which is using pop-unders.
Not Apple who has tried to fix their Java implementation to keep this from happening.

Since i'm at it, I'm really disappointed at apple for putting out crappy hardware like the Cinema 23 (alum). the LCD they used is below microsoft standards. I returned three of them and waiting until they address the issue.

I work at my university with graphic design professors, and I've had 2 of them ask me if they could trade their 20" aluminum displays for the old 20" Studio displays. They say the screens are worse than the old ones and the old ones were sharper (that's key when dealing with typography).

wierd...

ever since I downloaded the update, the fan on my powerbook has been going on NON-STOP! i'll i'm using is Safari, Microsoft Word, and iTunes... it never turned on when using those apps. did the update change anything? (I doubt it- java stuff...)

it's been going on for for the past 3-4 hours!

ISDN Beware!

If you are using an OpenNetworks NT Plus II ISDN Box beware!

I had to resart 4 times before the Mac recognised the box.

This has been a running issue that doesn't look like being resolved any time soon.

actually i have noticed a pick up in fan activity too. last night i was working on a photoshop image, my bedroom window open with snow outside. bloody freezing! but still the fan was on a good 75% of the time.

I don't believe this java update had anything to do with popunders. I read the release notes (something I would recommend to anyone before commenting on this or any other update!) and this release patches a possible backdoor in the current java implementation. Note, a similair release was out from sun as well as microsoft in the last month IIRC, because this hole is a java wide problem, not just apples implemenation.

Note, this has nothing to do with faster java, stopping pop unders, restoring hair growth, etc. For once, RTFM before rating a thread negative for not fixing something that it never claimed to fix!

its all good

At least Apple is keepig on top their OS security, versus sitting on their backsides until someone exploits it. If Apple is smart they have a whole cadre of people that do nothing else all day than try to find and patch vulnerabilities to the OS.

The last thing we want is to be caught with our pants down...

:p

Bravo to Apple for addressing the pop-under issue so quickly.

Nicely done.

I was really starting to get "irritated."

Forgot what a pain in the butt those things were.

Nope, I got one this morning. Apple didn't fix it.

It sure would be nice if I didn't have so many little "annoyances" to deal with while using my Mac. WindowServer eats up 20% of the CPU just doing a fancy little status bar sometimes, there was the bug where typing characters fast, ate up a bunch of CPU time (which was fixed but is now back, praise be to Apple), and now I have to see popup ads again. Safari was perfect with blocking them ever since my first new (since 1995) mac running 10.2.6, and now they break it. What a bunch of screw ups. It's still better than Windows but sadly I haven't found the perfect solution anymore. I used to think I had.

It'd be nice to have an OS where most of the time it seems my CPU usage is 0. Linux is the only one that has done that for me so far. Glad I still run that here at work, too.

was getting a lot of spinning beachballs using ebay (uk version) prior to installing the update - but not anymore - looks like mayby safari was struggeling with all the javascript? or is it just coincidence?

Okay, for those of you confusing this Java update with "Javascript".... they're NOT the same thing at all, not even close (except for the name). The correct name for Javascript is "ECMAScript"... just adopted the name Javascript somewhere early on and hasn't been dropped yet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECMAScript
(edit: ECMAScript is the successor to Javascript)
(edit #2: ECMAScript is the standardized derivative of Javascript)
... am I confused enough yet?

I don't expect this Java update to have any effect on the pop-up and pop-under blocking.

well, this looks like a good set of updates.

first the iPod updates haven't blown up anyone's iPod yet... and the Security Update hasn't blow up any Mac's yet. :p

that's a good sign, guess all of you lab rats have done a good job.

I would not call myself a Mac fanatic, however Mac OS is better than Windows. And I love the Apple Store, well because they are on my side. A friend gave me her old iPod (2nd Gen, I think), which wasn't working. She thought I might be able to fix it, because I do that sort of thing. Well, I could not figure it out. There is an Apple Store down the street, so during my lunch break one day, I took the iPod there to see if they could tell me what was wrong. The guy working there took a look at the iPod for a minute and then went into the back, he came back and handed me a brand new iPod! No questions asked! And he thanked me for coming in and wished me a good day! That is a company that cares about its customers.

From all the people I've heard from the Apple Store is very good about returns. So, hmmm, there you go.

From the way I read saigontiger's post, saigontiger is blaming MacDailyNews, not Apple.

Security Updater

Hmmm. Doesn't block "pop-unders".

16 meg download for ...

... what does this update fix, again?

Something that I can see in the real world? Or does this fix something that exists only in a vacuum in a lab?

I'm not going to download this updater.

I'm gonna wait for the next OSX update: 10.3.9 or Tiger. That way I will get this updater already built-in.

It's just the point of the Security Update, protecting us from something unseen. Will keep our Mac OS running safe and secure.

It is my understanding that the Security Update and Mac OS Updates are separate. It 's just that you wait, then you will be updating in bulk.

Installed here, and maybe I'm just Apple-optimistic, but the fans in my G5 seem to have calmed down a bit.

No pop-unders yet, but others have said this update wouldn't fix that anyway.

I've only gotten one of the silly things anyway.

Incremental OS updates usually incorporate the Security Updaters that were released between OS increments.

Example: Security Updaters that were released between Mac OS 10.3.7 and Mac OS 10.3.8 are incorporated into the Mac OS 10.3.8 updater.

Logic: Security Updaters that will be released between Mac OS 10.3.8 and Mac OS 10.3.9 should be incorporated into the Mac OS 10.3.9 updater.
... There may or may not be a 10.3.9. Maybe a 10.4.0 Tiger instead.

In essence: The incremental Mac OS updater is a single bulk updater. :)

Having trouble installing this one... Software update gets to the Installing part, says "(waiting for local disks)" and then hangs. Maybe rebooting will help.

I just installed the Security Update 2005-002 last evening. Took all the usual precautions, disconnected the external firewire HD. After installation ran Repair Disk Permissions prior to a restart. All is running as usual.

Black and white????

i have just installed the 2005-002 security update on 10.3.8 (new 1.67GHZ PBook), and am having some issues. . .

when I reboot, there is a flashing globe followed by a flashing folder (with a questionmark), and then the startup begins. During all of this, the screen is in color. . .

When the desktop loads, everything is in greyscale, EVERYTHING!

I have tried rebooting, checked all preferences, repaired permssions, etc. . .

I never had these issues before the security update, does anybody have any idea what the heck is going on?

Try command-option-control-8 and see if that fixes things.
