If this iPod updater doesn't fix the Smart Playlist problem across the iPod line, then that is REALLY ridiculous.

Call me caaarrrazy, but I actually get excited about the updates. There always good 9 times out of 10, and they make something faster, improve something that's already great.

Hopefully 10.4.3 soon, but I've had no problems with 10.4.2 so far.

IIRC, Smart playlists used to auto-update on the iPod (ie a "least recently played" playlist would change when you played a song). This was broken at some point, so they only update when re-synced to iTunes.

imac g4, 1 ghz.

All is fine thus far. Have not redocked my 3ed gen iPod since getting the iPod update, but . . . eh, I got Rita to worry about for now.

My Shuffle finally plays all of my purchased music! I've had problems with certain albums purchased from the music store not playing on my Shuffle. This update allows me to play those songs.

im not sure if it was available before. but after the update itunes shows the option of sound check for ipod shuffle.

also when you turn off the shuffle it no longer blinks the green light for about a second, now it turns off right away.

iPod update!? Awesome! I hope this finally fixes my 40Gig iPod (got it around December). Everytime I try to turn it on I get the "exclamation point folder" thing. Or randomly when playing the HD will "click" and spin down, and spin up again and repeat, almost as if its getting stuck.

The update is for the SHUFFLE only. Nothing has been added or fixed for any other ipod.

it does not contain updates to the ipod photo or color ipods at all.. ~sigh~ maybe next time.. :( i would think the 3d world clocks and the stopwatch that are implemented in the nano would be an easy firmware addition to the photo/color series ipods.

Agreed. Hey Apple, How about taking care of your existing customers (even though we're probably the ones buying all the Nanos anyway - loyalty doesn't last forever).

I'd settle for just the feature that marks new podcasts with a blue dot.

There *could* be a technical reason, though. Embedded chips have a limited amount of space for additions and while bug fixes can usually be accommodated, new programs and the infrastructure to support them may not.

I'd be willing to bet it was possible, though, just that Apple wants as many reasons as possible for people to buy brand new iPods.

Why are you mad about this? You purchased your iPod with the feature set that was advertised with it. At no point did Apple say they'd be adding said features down the road. If they did, then they'd have some obligation to do that. If you want the new features, buy the new iPod. Simple. I'll take your old one.

it would nice to have a feature in itunes that would

continue playing a song that the ipod is playing right after you dock it. (assuming itunes is open)

i dont imagine it would be very hard to do. and it goes with the whole seamless integration theme. that way you come home listening the ipod, dock it, and keep listening.

walk. dock. rock.

Oh, they closed up the malloc debugging! That's kind of a lousy fix, disabling it altogether, but this is an important update to get installed ASAP.

Does this update cure the Safari "picture of death"? I wonder if anyone tried it out yet. Downloading the update now :)

Strangely the iPod update seems to have caused some trouble for my cube. Although, this computer has been erratic in the past with other updates, so I doubt this problem is common.

After reboot, the screen turns blue, the little spinny thing comes up for a moment or two, then the screen turns black and presents a prompt asking for me to login. When I do, it doesn't recognize me (maybe it is asking for a root pass?). If I force restart, there are lots of random problems like Spotlight continuously re-indexing (but not progressing). No real worries as this computer is only used for music (always backed up) and I will simply reinstall. I offer this just as a "heads up" for those who care.

too bad, wish it would. That was such a cool feature. I was really hoping they would have ironed that one out on the nano - but no such luck!

I can totally understand mikataur here. yeah, he bought the iPod with a certain feature set, but it's not an unchangeable object as such. The iPod has a huge hard drive on it which leaves ample room for improvements via software. Apple can easily choose to update that sw. If they don't, it's their choice - and I can understand how one could be disappointed by that.

Apple offers more OS fixes than Microsoft. I think that's a good thing, but people always make fun of MS about the number of security updates they get, which is just ignorant.
You have to take into account than Apple delivers fixes for all the 3rd party/open source software applications as well (i.e. Ruby in this update).
MS don't do that, won't do that. Mainly because their OS doesn't come with any useful additions at all.
