Shamino the almighty: I have a question then

Could you have been seeing this?

Apparently Mac OS turns off the speakers when going to sleep (to save power) and it doesn't turn them back on again until the first sound is played. If you wake up from sleep and then do a shutdown/restart, the volume level saved in NVRAM is left at zero, and you don't hear a startup chime.

The workaround (if you care) is to do something that makes a sound before shutdown/restart.

Shamino I assume you are talking about Page In/Page Outs when you say "swapping". I currently have 716880/657172(which will probably increase still while I'm typing this. Any ideas? When I load or close photoshop my system GRINDS to a halt. Alot like what I was experiencing on my windows machines I used for the past 12 years. I never got to these levels when using panther, the only thing I can think of is that Tiger is using consistently more ram. I included a pic! Thanks in advance!

Yes. Paging in the UNIX world is what is known as swapping on other operating systems. (Technically, UNIX does swapping and paging, with some technical differences between them, but this isn't an OS course :) )

The absolute number doesn't mean too much, since it's cumulative since the machine was booted, but if you notice it increasing rapidly, then you probably need more memory.

Page-outs are the big one to look at (the right-side of the slash). These are memory pages used by apps that are transferred to disk to make room for other stuff. Page-ins are less important, because the page-in mechanism is also used as a part of application loading, so it's not necessarily a sign of overcommitting memory.

The picture shows that you have 512M of RAM and there have been a lot of page-outs (assuming it hasn't been too long since your last reboot.)

On the other hand, inactive+free memory is over 300M (more than half your RAM), so you were not really overcommitted at the time you took this snapshot.

Depending on how many apps you have running, 512M may not be enough. Photoshop is a large app, so it wouldn't surprise me if it pushes your system over the top. And it may well be the case that some stock parts of Tiger (like Spotlight) consume enough memory that what used to be enough on 10.3 is no longer enough for the same level of performance.

A memory upgrade may be well worth considering. Unless you have a mini, installation should be pretty easy. (Even on a mini, it shouldn't be all that hard.)

Thanks a ton Shamino, your like a dictionary about this stuff. I've been wanting to put a gig stick of ram in my Pb for a longtime now, but with all the expenses I run into at college it makes it a little difficult. Although there are some purchases that I probably have not needed to make. Thanks again!

iPod update!? Awesome! I hope this finally fixes my 40Gig iPod (got it around December). Everytime I try to turn it on I get the "exclamation point folder" thing. Or randomly when playing the HD will "click" and spin down, and spin up again and repeat, almost as if its getting stuck.

I had the same problems. Tried everything (reset to default 3 times). No luck. Send it back to Apple. Got a new one wich is working but "never as good as the first time"... *sigh* :(

I wanna be "fadeted"

too bad, wish it would. That was such a cool feature. I was really hoping they would have ironed that one out on the nano - but no such luck!

And what about introducing the "Magic Cross-Fade" into the iPod as well. Just like in iTunes... That shouldn't be too hard and that would make me say "Wow finally!" ;)

Powerbook Slower for Games

Games seem to be the only apps affected on my powerbook. They run noticeably slower. I'm running a 1.67 GHz Powerbook with 1 GB of RAM w/ a 80 GB HD w/ over 50 GB available...

I have the impression that the airportsignal on my tibook is even worse now after the update than before.
Has anyone else noticed this?

broke networking on my wife's ibook

Just got the frantic call from home, after applying the security update and rebooting, it won't connect via airport or ethernet to our network, so now it's very secure! Thumbs up Apple!

What was that about "Apples just work"?

Well, it finally downloaded and installed today.

Just goes to show you that a Mac user takes security updates very serious and updates as soon as possible. It odd however I believe that Mac users actually get excited in regards to ANY update. ;) :p :D

Windows users are always confused since they are not sure if the PC will start-up or just blow up. :p ;) :D

Well I think that there really isn't any difference between the two worlds. While my wife's ibook will start, after the update it won't connect to the network via airport or ethernet. Please explain to me, how exactly, is that any better than your bad windows update?

I'm hoping that it's an easy fix once I get a look at it.

Might it have anything to do with the way Mac updates are viewed (at least by me) as more of a privilege, whereas Windows updates seem to be more of a mandatory thing and can be quite a hassle at times...?

Just my perspective anyways...

the new update for the ipod now lets the shuffle keep track of the "play count" and then itunes syncs those numbers when you dock it.

Same here -- it asked for it after the required restart. I thought I knew my keychain password, but it didn't work. It soon told me I had entered the wrong password too many times and I'd have to wait to try again later. The password request mentioned airport, so I figured I wouldn't have access to my wireless network, but everything came up and connected just fine.

Same here too, Airport password first which I thought would be the WEP or root admin. Neither of which worked, went into keychain access in utilities and reset them all, still happens from time to time.

It's affecting my pop accounts as well.

Might be a tiger wipe and re-install, running a dual 1.8 june 2004 revision.

Great. Now neither my G5 iMac, nor my laptop will shut down.

Nice release, Apple.

Does anyone think that this may be affecting my Safari? I keep getting random crashes in Safari, when i have a few tabs opened up. I don't think it is a system resource kinda thing, I just recently(last night) installed a 1 gig card, and I still get the crash, that I got when i had 512.

I have trouble with Safari crashing myself. I'm still using Panther 10.3.9. Soon to be on Tiger. Hope that 10.4.3 will fix the Safari problem.

I'm running Tiger, so assuming it's occurring under the same conditions it must be that security update. I was running 10.3.9 and i never remember Safari Crashing, I am crossing my fingers it never happens while I'm writing an email/filling something out!

Nikon Capture

Anyone with experience of running Nikon Capture 4.3.2 on this update? Mine has slowed way down by a factor of three or four. I clawed back a bit of the slowdown with a strong dose of Diskwarrior and some permission repairs, but it is still almost unusable.

No other problems to report.
