40 minutes and counting

so my quicksilver dual G4 has been hanging in reboot for at least 40 minutes at this point. when everyone else said long reboots has it gone this long? well, its friday and memorial day weekend. i've unplugged my display and i hope its ok on tuesday :p if not - i'm asking for the idle G5 on the first floor!

I didn't really pay attention to mine, it sat at a black screen for awhile, then sat at the spinning progress circle thing for several minutes, and then rebooted with a normal bootup time. It was definitely longer then the last batch of updates, though.

I had issues with connecting to the internet via airport after the update.
would select my router, but then i got the beach ball, and it wouldn't stop.
restarted... same thing.
THEN, I logged out, logged back in, and a dialog asking me if i would allow keychain to change my password (or something like that) and I clicked Allow, and now everything is dandy. weird though.

Definitely didn't take 40 minutes lol.

Odd, odd? THIS is odd!

Just installed on my CD Macbook...only thing I noticed it did was rearrange the icons on my desktop (odd...?).
Safari seems snappier too....

;) ;) ;) My Safari got rearranged but my desktop icons seem snappier now!! (nudge, nudge ;) ;) )

Really tho, I've udated 4 macs now, from Power PC to Intel Core 2 Duo & all are finer than frog's hair.

just chiming in here as well... updated my octo core Mac Pro with no problems. In fact, it fixed a "problem" that I noticed with the last update.
After the last update, my "About This Mac" window said "2 x 3 GHz Unknown" in the processor field. It was still recognized properly in System Profiler and Activity Monitor showed all the cores functioning fine, so it was just an oversight somewhere in development of the update.. but glad to see that it's now back to saying "2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon" :)

btw, Adium works just fine as well (connecting to AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ and Jabber).. I saw some people here having issues with it. also, my desktop icons are in the same order, etc

The update appeared to go ok, ran normally for a few hours but then problems started. Ive had 6 kernel panics in 30 hours. These are the first 3.

What is the corrupted registry for the IOUSBMassStorageClass? Any idea what I need to do?

Do you have any USB hard drives or other USB devices attached? It sounds like something with the driver that's used for them has gone corrupt, possibly.

Bitten the bullet and done it.

AOK so far.

**Touches wood**

Will let you know in a week if I am getting any problems.

I too had these kernel panics and now my system fails to boot. I get stuck with Apple symbol at load. I tried DiskWarrior, but it did no good. I'm resorting to going to the Genius bar right now. Crossing my fingers that my HDD is salvagable.

I re applied the patch from the stand alone updater, cleared all the caches and rebooted. Got the same problem within 2 minutes. I then remembered I had a cheap USB hub that in the past I had had a few problems with devices dismounting in use, and indeed was having problems keeping a SD card reader working with. I removed this from the system and rebooted again and the system had now run for 30+ hours normally. Looks like the hub is scrap.

The update worked fine for me, but it did turn off the DNS server (reset /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.isc.named.plist back to the factory-default contents.) This caused my home LAN to lose DNS (effectively breaking all network connectivity) until I turned it back on again. Fortunately, this was pretty easy to do (edit the plist file and change "true" to "false" for the "Disabled" tag's value.)
Well, this one scared me a little. On reboot, it spun 114 times (ya, I'm like that), before rebooting again, on its own. 43 spins this time, to a blue screen for about a minute, and it was slow coming back. Safari does not seem any different, to me. But that's always a subjective "seems". But everything "seems" fine, now.
In general, when this happens (a long startup, followed by a secondary reboot), it means a firmware update is being installed.
I get 30Mbps from comcast
Well, that's a diagnostic program. In real-life, when you are restricted by the bandwidth of the remote server, and when you are using TCP connections (and therefore have to send back "ack" packets), you probably won't come close to this.

What speeds do you get when downloading files instead of running diagnostics?

Anyway, I think it is bad to promote 6 mbps and not being able to deliver, and then just throw a "we don't guarantee a minimum speed"
What makes you think they are unable to deliver for other customers? If most people served by Comcast are getting close to 6MBps, should they refuse to advertise this, simply because some customers aren't seeing those speeds?

In general, when a service provider says "up to" some amount, this is the maximum they will permit. It means connections are rate-limited to that amount, either by administration or because it's the top speed of the equipment. It never means they are promising this speed.

There are a lot of factors that can cause performance to suffer on a broadband network. These include wireline-distance from the central office (which may have nothing to do with line-of-sight distance), the degree of oversubscription, and (especially for cable) how much bandwidth is being consumed by other customers on your circuit.

If you want a guarantee, then you're going to have to lease a line. And that won't be cheap. Expect to pay thousands of dollars a month for a line with a guaranteed 6Mbps bandwidth.
