Fixed through re-install of El Capitan 10.11.3.

Restart and hold Command-R. Select Reinstall Mac OS X.

Download (via WiFi) on my Charter Internet was about 12 minutes. Install was about 22 minutes. Came up working good with Ethernet re-established. Everything else exactly as it was before re-install. Note my 27" iMac Retina was reporting there was no PCI ethernet adapter installed after the silent update was pushed to it on 26-February.

You’re all wrong. Apple is about to release a revolutionary lightning ethernet adapter for $79.
It’s a part of their growing accessory line which includes:
Lighting to USB port
Lightning to HDMI
and the forthcoming
Lightning to headphone jack

"hilarious".

I had dead Ethernet this afternoon and spoke to Apple Support. They had no idea about this issue, and have arranged a Genius appointment for me later next week.
If they've broken my iMac with a dodgy software update im not lugging a 24" iMac across town for them to be just as clueless.
I'll hold on for a software fix.

What on earth causes my remark to make me seem paranoid? What is there for me to be paranoid of?

It's a simple request to abandon the hyperbole and rationally discuss issues. Yes, this update was bad. No, this update, nor any other failed update, should cause Apple to exit the computer business.
You can simply just ignore them.

This is definitely not true. 802.11ac is fast enough for a large number of LAN tasks. It really is more than adequate for most tasks these days, even gaming (which really doesn't use up much bandwidth anyway. People who buy 100Mb/s connections to game on are... Special :) ).
Who buys 100Mb/s ethernet nowadays? It should be all 1Gb/s

They had made a Genius appointment for me, too. However, if you reinstall Mac OS X using a restart & Command-R, it will fix the problem. Lots of us are getting it fixed using that approach. Nothing else changes on your Mac and there is nothing to set up-- it reboots back just like normal before they sent out the bad security update.

Did this 'update' break anything else?
Some of the Mac App Store apps refuse to launch today, Mac App Store occasionally asks to login and fails, and when I open 'App Store' page in 'System Preferences' it says 'Can't determine if automatic downloads are enabled due to a network problem' (I never used Ethernet port and connection is via WiFi - it works just fine and Safari works, etc).

The software fix is already out. If your computer has already received the update, Apple told me the only fix is to reinstall the OS. That fixed it for me.

I only use wired network at home. Partly because the quality of connections is way superior to using wi-fi and partly because I try to keep the EMR at home to a minimum. No bluetooth is used either.

Wasn't affected badly by any upgrade though.

Didn't realise it was this update. Neither did Apple Support as I spent 2 hours on the phone with them trying to fix it. What a joke! And it wasn't anything that I even asked for as it was sent silently. Hope the fix comes in quickly. Yes, some of us (the sensible ones) do still use it....

This is the same problem I was having, I couldn't run some of my apps and it wanted my password, after providing it, it was unable to verify my computer and gave me an error code. After reinstalling the OS, it took care of my ethernet problem as well as my App Store problems.

I'm surprised at all the hate for ethernet in this thread. Come on, folks.

You should ALWAYS use ethernet if you can easily run a cable.

- The performance runs rings around even the best wireless. Solid 1gbps available no matter what, with almost no latency and pretty much zero jitter.
- You reduce load on your wireless network, so your remaining devices on WiFi will perform better.

It's a win/win. Of course, if it's a huge pain to run a cable, enjoy WiFi. But there's no reason NOT to use wired ethernet if it's a simple run.

Well its too late its broken for me...
I have a TM backup from yesterday at 5 40 is that good?
I'm sorry to hear that really ...it seems people are updating it without knowing this.. And becomes victim of it. Did u back up?

Aside from the fact that the AC enhancements can't be maintained beyond 3 feet (falls back to N after that), who wants game installs to take more than 5 minutes?
You obviously don't know anything about AC. You're telling me that 80/160/80+80MHz channels, beam forming, 256QAM and 8 spacial streams are all unavailable after 3 feet (yes, I know that most consumer APs don't go above 3 or 4 spatial streams, and 80+80/160MHz channels aren't being used yet, and are not practical in many wireless environments)?

Argh! I ended up reinstalling the whole OS yesterday when this suddenly broke after a reboot. I *had* been fiddling with settings on my router and assumed that it was related, but it seems not. I can only echo the posts above... how did this get through testing?!

100Mb internet, not ethernet... My point is that it's overkill for gaming, and a waste of money. Many gamers spend their cash on it though.

Plus, 100Mb Ethernet is actually still used. It costs less, so for businesses which don't need the extra bandwidth, it's definitely a good move to use the older, cheaper technology.
