This has to be a prank. It is that bad. They need to not even toy with releasing this right now.

Just wondering why the disappointment on this clean up feature? I tried it on a few photos and it seemed to work well for me.

The demo video from Mac Rumors on YouTube shows that it really messes up the background in most cases for their sample photo.

I feel like the thumbnail of that video shows a use case that it was never intended for?
Don't see why not. If you find out your brother was a robot all along, you'd have the robot destroyed and removed from any photos he was in to avoid the painful memories.

I hope the feature is improved soon. That poor girl looks like she lost an arm in a horrific warehouse accident.

And what's left of the plants looks highly unnatural.

Cool feature! It doesn't work as well with larger objects in images though. When I circled my face on my ID, it did an 8-bit pixelation.

Look at the picture. The girl lost her arm, part of the step is missing, and some sort of mutant weed has appeared where the boy was.

That looks like it's not really working.

I bet they will need the whole year to reach what Google or other apps have for months.

So, the AI features so promoted are just crappy marketing...

No reason to jump into this hype Apple... just make your software better overall, work on battery life - this marketing crap is not needed!

it's also an alpha right now, considering iOS 18 is still in beta, and 18.1 is in testing. and when it finally launches, it's in limited markets, with a waitlist.

one of the major factors of developing AI is feeding data to its models, so until it gets into more user hands and gets used more, it's going to have growing pains.

AI is hardly marketing, it happens to be a game-changer when it comes to software. but what do i know, only every major tech company on the planet is throwing time and money at it....

while we're here, what's with the need to use the word "crap" in every sentence?

Apple portraits sucked pretty badly and I didn’t think it was worth doing it when it was in beta either. Now nearly every family photo is portrait mode. I hope this is the same. They sold this as Magic though and to me this isn’t any better then most most apps already do without Apple intelligence. Kinda a dud

It doesn’t look great now…but if it really is an AI feature it should get better in time.

To me this is more of an oops fix not a way to clear large chunks. Seeing the Google version replace the car better is neat–I wonder what it looked when it was in Beta.

I think it’s neat.

I’m sure it works well in a lot of situations. However, we’ve several examples already where it’s quite bad.

We can say it just in beta, but one thing that’s almost universally true is that once Apple releases something like this, it doesn’t get improved upon until a future major release, and often the improvements are tied to new hardware.

It worked okay when I used it - definitely expect major improvements over the next couple months
Most of my tests were unsatisfactory. The AI model runs locally. It has to be tiny. This is infill quality that is worse than the original dall-e from years ago. Detail is bad, but the “understanding” the AI has is also bad. Look at the Lightroom remove tool compared to this - it’s like two different universes. I get that LR is a “pro” product… but if a local model that fits into the 8GB of RAM on the newest phones is this bad now, I don’t have much expectation that it can get the order of magnitude improvement it needs before release. I think it is constrained by needing to run locally. I’m 100% in favor of the security this affords, but it really is poor.

It’s not that I miss this feature but can’t believe that Apple is restricting beta testing of such features if you live in EU. I do understand that EU had been hard on Apple but why such hurdles? Appple’s greediness (maybe Phill’s) caused everything. I can understand that functions like Siri can handle only English in the beginning but what does it has to do with region? If Apple tries to teach a lesson for EU citizens, we do have other phones to choose from.

Actually yeah point taken and I withdraw.
I had been playing with very simple things like removing a bottle from a table and things like that.
As soon as I kept going and tried anything more than very simple ... I see what you mean.

Tools like this should clearly state in the corner of the photo that it was edited by AI, so people know.
I don’t know if this tool does it, but now there is a new metadata type that states if a picture has been through AI or not.

Yeah, Google Photos Magic Eraser has been available in the EU since it launched years ago. Just sayn Apple.
You can even use it on Apple Devices when you have a Google Subscription.
