These items are not in direct view of the road. Imagine a windscreen where data is interspersed on it your eye would be immediately distracted and often have difficulty discerning whether or not that is a pixel or a person in your view. And yes the police can pull you over for not having a fully clear windscreen. As stated this is nothing more than a stupid gimmick.

Does looking down or in the mirror whilst driving count as a lapse of concentration?

I imagine that if it were ever implemented that a driver would have to initiate the display. Simple on and off switch.

I like your thinking (I did note you're from the UK too) ;) It's plausible and I like the explanation you gave to looking at the current car instruments.

Thank you. For instance, the technology fighter jets currently use could be implemented into cars. (Sorta, Fighter Jets use projection to project the information onto the screen).

Like this, would be cool

A see-through display, which allows you to keep great concentration on the road.

Thats how I imagine they would implement the technology into a vehicle, nice mock up. How would the display have a mirrored finish? Perhaps the wing mirrors are displays and they feed an image from a small camera mounted above the wing "mirror".... anyway thats a great use for the tech in my opinion.

You can gets HUDs in cars now, although I think they're currently front projection devices. I spent a few hours driving a BMW 550i that had one, for example. It was a gimmick. I am old fashioned and prefer analog gauges whose needle positions I can interpret at a glance. LCD panels would make HUDs cheaper and simpler, which is good for the the gadget-obsessed, I guess. Putting visual I.C.E. or heating controls on the windscreen is not likely to enhance driving safety.

This see through LCD panel reminds me more of the displays from the movie Minority Report. It's pretty, but I am not seeing how it enhances functionality. I suppose you could always change the background to something other than transparent for when you actually need to focus on what's on the screen instead of what's behind it. Having cube walls made of these as suggested in the video is kind of a scary thought too..

Does anyone know how this technology even works? Looks cool but extremely useless.

Simply illustrates how the drivers view is further blocked and would be distracted. They have small huds in aircraft because your highly unlikely ever to run anyone over. And to whoever asked, there is a world of difference between a quick glance down to a dial and the drivers view being permanently obscured. YOU WILL NEVER SEE THIS GIMMICK TECHNOLOGY IN A CAR WINDSCREEN OBSCURING VIEWS AND THREATENING ROAD SAFETY.

Come back to this thread in 10 years time. I'm sure this will kick off before then.

Permanently obscured you say? I'm sure it can be switched on and off. Just to let you know a previous poster has said that a HUD is in existence and projects an image onto a windscreen (identical in many aspects).

You're wrong on the safety issue as it has been approved for use. Is it a good idea? well that remains to be seen.

No it hasn't been approved for use, certainly not the images of the like someone posted above.

Has it not been approved? I could have sworn the same concept (same end result visually - image on windscreen) is in use in one of BMW's vehicles which are sold and driven...

lmao I must concede, your post uses too much factual information to possibly argue any further.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes about as much facts as your BMW sold and driven. As I stated the technology HAS NOT been approved, certainly not as the images someone posted above.

Here is an image of the BMW, it is sold and driven and certainly is as the image above:

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/5series/sedan/2007/allfacts/ergonomics/hud.html

Here is an extract from that page - I'll take the advice of industry experts over your laughable assumptions any day of the week.

"An optional feature in the BMW 5 Series Sedan, Head-Up Display presents important information - speed, navigation directions and alerts - directly in the driver's field of vision. The information is projected with a focal point just above the end of the bonnet. The driver's attention stays on the road ahead and the eye strain of repeated refocussing is eliminated."

On another note, I can't possibly take you seriously as you call your Macbook Pro a "badboy pro", that just screams intelligent input.

I therefore repeat... as I stated the technology HAS NOT been approved, certainly not as the images someone posted above.

And it is none of your business what I call my gadgets, thank you very much.

1.I therefore say you should read the whole thing again.

2.And if your computer names are none of our business, keep it to yourself ;)

Yet another thread destroyed by shambo. Anyway, lets just ignore him.

The images you posted clearly illustrate the drivers field of being unacceptably blocked disturbing the vision and concentration of the driver view of the road and surroundings. This will NEVER be passed as safe or acceptable and it doesn't matter how many times you stamp your feet.

Shambo - the image on the BMW website is one of a translucent image being shown in the drivers field of view. It has clearly been deemed safe how can you argue with that?

I believe you would argue with a fly on the wall and have little to offer these boards.

People like this is why everyone hates the mac fanbase.

I wonder what it looks like from the back side??? can others see what you're doing???

Wouldn't it be unbelievably expensive to replace the windows on a train with a see through screen? I mean, they must be about 5 x 3 foot, the cheapset low tech screen would cost hundreds, if not thousands of pounds at that size. Plus, one good punch from a drunk and it'd need replacing (i don't know about american trains, but this'd be a frequent occurrence on a british train!).
Are you suggesting that we scrap advancements in technology in favour of economics?

Samsung is developing a see through screen is this some thing we will ever see on Apple products? Personally I don't really like it - I can see the use of something like this in a car (Heads up Display) but why would you want to be able to see through your laptop screen? It just messes with the image quality surely (And if you add a white or black background to what you are doing then what is the point?)

God I hope not.
